Ablett v Selwood

Selwood isn't a top 20 player of all time, or close.
As a football leader, in my time, I'd put Selwood right up there.

Sort of like the NBA argument of LeBron James and Larry Bird. Who is the best small forward. As a player, James. But if you are starting out and you have a young James and a young Bird to choose from, who do you build your team around, James or Bird? Bird every time.

Same thing with Ablett/Selwood. jmo

Ablett is playing sore...no doubt about that IMO. One wonders if he will ever reach the heights he met a couple of years back. His body isn't what it was...he'll be tested out early on you can bet on that! Reputation will mean little to Selwood....

Selwood was awesome last week and is as hard as a cats head...at the very least, he'll match a not 100% fit Ablett I reckon.

Don't like that sort of competition, both brilliant, different players being brilliant. My heart lies with Gary though part of being the 'son of' and all the romance that goes with that. Would have loved him to remain at Geelong but think it was a good move for him

As i said on an earlier thread on this topic - i would pick Selwood - because i think with the whole package he has brought to Geelong ( after the decades of years of failures the club went through) - hes Geelongs best or most important player ever

It would be very interesting who Leigh Mathews ( 4 times premiership coach and arguably the greatest player of all time ) would pick between the 2 . He is a massive Selwood fan/admirer and i think he would pick Selwood

**** can't believe Ablett will have spent 8 years at the Suns. What a ******* waste of footballing talent.
Hear hear. He should have been ripping finals apart, staking his claim to be the best of all time at the MCG in September and winning games that matter, not rocking up for five years of consistent drubbings in front of 15,000 people.

People point to 2011 and say that we didn't miss Ablett. That may well have been true that year, but my God we missed him at the business end of 2013.

Ablett's first 5 years weren't as good as Selwood. The comparison is closer than people may think.
When it looked like one might go to the Suns I thought a lot about it that year and decided that I'd rather keep Selwood. Age was a factor, however he also has an intangible that Ablett lacks.

Perhaps not. But his years from 6-12 were on a whole different level to just about every other player in the competition. Even this year, playing hurt (supposedly), and at almost 32, he's still outperforming most midfielders in the competition.

How many years does Ablett have left in him?

And he will never play a final with the Suns.
Such a waste. Even Judd played and won finals with Carlton.
Well, I guess that is the downside (sometimes) of being a star in a football side. They may make the finals this year, though.

Still who have they beat? Freo, Carlton, Essendon. Hmmmmm...

They were going to build the Suns around Gazza. And yet GWS -who never landed Buddy - seem to have gone right past them.

Football Gods, eh.
