If an independent panel is set up for this type of rating for academy and father/son, then surely an independent panel should also be set up to value the real worth of players come trade period, especially to avoid clubs such as the Lions getting reamed as was the case in every single GH5 trade and Mitch Clark etc.

I think the system should allow us to get as many academy kids as possible without getting bargains that are unfair, like getting a player bidded on in the first round for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Neither would get the green light from Eddie when the AFL run them by him.

Agreed, was being quite facetious with my previous post.

Perhaps it is just me, but my cynicism for the game, the rules, those in control, the AFL just grows by the week.

I always thought footy would be a constant throughout my life, but sadly, I don't think it will be the case if things continue in the manner that they are.

Oh well, I'm sure in the AFL's eyes, there'll always be another minion that'll replace those that have had a gutful and walked away.

Definitely not just you. I'm right on the edge of walking away. Will give Gil a little more time, but it ain't trending well.

Its sad though Bob and then shortly after, I find my answer:

AUSTRALIAN football has identified Australia’s Chinese and Indian communities as crucial areas of recruitment as the game seeks engagement from more new Australians.

There you go, instead of doing more to ensure cynics like you and I aren't lost to the game, target a new market that has no knowledge, frustration or questions the establishment or direction of the game and will accept the nonsense that is going on with the game as some wonderful and faultless game.

The AFL should seriously just do away with a quarter of the teams and have the comp they so desire, which wouldn't include the Lions.

I took it at face value and thought it was an excellent point.

In the world according to Eddie, a frontier club getting a player in the draft worth pick 12 for pick 33 would be obscene and unfair... even if it only happened once every 5 years.

But a frontier club losing a player at the trade table worth pick 12 and only getting pick 33 is just tough luck... even if it happens 5 times in one trade period.

"Equalisation".

What shits me the most is you can get someone worth a top 10 pick (Rockliff) in the PSD already. You can also pick up a Mitch Thorp, worth pick 50 plus, in the first round. There's no guarantee the academy picks will still look like a bargain in 2020 despite looking like a bargain 18 months before the draft.

Do you think its better him playing Redlands than with the Lions?

I don't mind it. He would have to just slot in around our listed players for Lions whereas Redlands they may be more inclined to give him a more prominent role as their sole objective is winning the game.

He trains with the academy and has played with Lions reserves quite a ibt so I think he would be well on the way to learning our game plan already.

Definitely a good thing for those of you that missed TAC Future Stars with a segment on the Academy system particularly with Hutchy asking questions such as how can we make it fairer for Vic, WA and SA clubs. Then an ill-formed Nick Dal Santo on the panel asking why the Victorian clubs don't have a system whereby they can put players aside as the northern clubs can with the academy. Its called the TAC Cup you fool, which fortunately Sheehan pointed out there is 12 academies in Victoria called the TAC clubs with approx. 500 players involved b/w 15-19 years of age at each of those 12 clubs.

Honestly, the ignorance and mentality of the Victorian footy public is unbelievable. Basically only on par with Eddie's rants. The discussions I've heard about the academy on that show, radio, BigFooty etc. from a Vic-centric perspective are just nonsensical, it honestly comes across as though we're just being gifted players for nothing.

The AFL should seriously revert back to a VFL, this national competition is honestly getting pointless.

From today's Herald Sun. Jay Clark and Jon Ralph article so make of it what you will

So they're introducing a system that discourages clubs from even picking their own academy players. Solid work AFL. We're literally developing players for other clubs if we weren't already because of the "Homesickness factor"

They were happy for us to have an academy until it began to show signs of working. AFL (HQ Melbourne) private thinking - "Geez, if we thought you would actually be able to make good AFL footballers out of those kids up north, we would never have started this".

Yep, just like with the retention allowance.

"We fully supported this retention allowance to help the Lions compete on a level playing field... but then they became competitive".

It is just crazy to try and make clubs pay true value for academy or F/S picks. If you have pick 18, and someone else would pay pick 8, there is no way you can come up with a formula to make sure the club with pick 18 can pay what they are worth. Right off the top, paying multiple picks for 1 player is just unfair for everyone. Next to that, who says this 18 year old will live up to potential? You cant put a value on something intangible like draftee talent.

All they need to do is make sure a club cant take multiple players in the same year meaning the pay significantly less. If u have 2 1st round quality players available, you need 2 1sr round picks to take them, not ur 1st and 2nd round picks.

Seriously, what is the true value of 10 spots in the draft, also considering draft strength varies year to year as well. AFL is doing to drafting what they did to the rules of the game, stuff around with them when they didnt need to.

You are forced to possibly over pay on academy or F/S prospects because you are not drafting them from a pool, but paying a projected or estimated value of a player. A draftee in the draft pool as normal doesnt get valued and clubs made to pay a certain price for them.

I just can't think of a framework for how this panel will work that will increase perceptions of fairness and equity. It will only create more questions around duplicity, not less.

It's enough to make me think that Barrett is completely wrong about it all, but the AFL have probably leaked these details to him to soften the ground. So it appears that the AFL really IS that stupid.

We need to get in the minds of these academy kids. Give them an understanding that we want them, even if we can't draft them because Vic clubs feel threatened. Let them know that after they've spent two years at Collingwood etc. that we will want them back home!

The northern alliance will have to hide elite talent out of the spotlight from now on.

Should have played "Ken Beays" for Redlands this weekend.

Yep and I fail to see how a panel rating players will achieve any fairness and equity. Lewy Taylor is a perfect example. The experts rated him quite high from memory, yet he was still available at pick 28. So chances are, if say Lewy was an academy player last year and there was a panel, we more than likely would have had to use our pick 7 to acquire him even discounting the fact that he still would have been available at pick 28 even without a club actually nominating him.

The AFL should just leave it be and sure occasionally a club will have a little win here and there, but big deal, it all shakes out in the long run.

Yep, so basically the revised academy will mean we will basically never be able to get a bargain or "slider" from our region ever again.

Meanwhile VIC, SA and WA clubs will continue to get bargains from their areas every year. We'd probably be better off without academies to be honest.

It'd be nice if the media people commenting on the academies actually spent a year or two in Qld watching the local comps and saturation coverage that the other football codes get compared to Aussie Rules footy in the media, so they could see what the academies are fighting against.
