So any chance you can find out the names of any of the kids?

Was going to, but on the day when you went into the program you couldn't see them - only after the game was finished.

I haven't bothered to go back, but I will now

Grand Final in ach of these leagues:

"#3, #4, #12 and #15 for Morningside can seriously play"

Cooper Short, Julian Cruice, Matthew Robson, Oscar Tanks (in order of numbers above)

"#10 and #11 from Aspley know their way around though, can certainly play"

Ethan Myers, Rory O'Brien

"Couple of kids for the Magpies in #10 and #12 just put the team on their backs and carried them to an amazing win"

Harry Thomson & Maxwell Boothey

Yer at Yeronga, it is only a 5 minute stroll from where I live, I also watched some of the Under 14 Div 1 GF on live feed as my grandson played div 1 for Yeronga this year, Southport beating Burleigh pretty easily. There was a kid that played for IIRC Vic point and his nickname was magic, (at least that was what his team mates and coaches called him) far and away the best player I saw in that division and I only missed a couple of Yeronga's games this season.

that would be Raph Geesu. Very good player

Cheers Miller1971. I’ll have to start a database of names to keep an eye out.

Well it was only one game, but I felt he was clearly the best player on the field in a losing side (albeit by a point)

As I said though, that North competition standard was far inferior to the game prior for the south comp between Burleigh and Morningside. Aspley or Grange would not get within 10 goals of those 2 teams.

Lol. One of those boys is my son.

Long way to go before you need to add him to any database!

He's a good local footballer, not a draft prospect!
It’s all good.

I like to keep a list of potential academy prospects.

I have no expectations on any, until I see how they go in their draft year.

It would be good if our academy could start regularly producing a couple of draftable kids each year.

I imagine the kid in question (given the surname) is #10 Harry Thomson, from Sherwood. So assume he is 14 years old, and 2026 is his draft year.

I have watched one single game, so not like I was declaring him the next Michael Voss. Just an observation from the weekend, that he has some elite weapons in the arsenal for a young player. The big fella in his team also was clutch in his marking and kicking a solo goal to tie it up.

Sorry Tommo, the kid has talent - you should embrace it and nurture it, not dismiss it.

How do we make our academy as good as Sydney's?
Find a sponsor who will pump $1m a year in to it, because that’s what QBE put in to the Swans academy every year.

Then hire Hodge as the senior assistant coach, so his boys grow up in and around the club, and become die hard Lions fans. Hope like hell they go through our academy, and are better than their dad.

Funnily enough I did a count recently (Swans academy thread on main board), and we have produced more total players that played AFL (at least 1 game) than the swans have. Only the giants have developed more than us

how many swans academy kids playing somewhere other than the swans?
Here's a copy of the list I made (no guarantees its fully accurate especially the swans who didnt have a published list I could find)

Brisbane
(I can count 16 that have played AFL)
Freeman, Archie Smith, Andrews, Hipwood, Keays, Hammelman, Ballenden, Payne, Coleman, Fullerton, Carter Michael,
Buzza, Wagner (not sure if he played for North), Cumberland, Will Martin, Chol

Sydney
(Cant find a list online especially any that went to other clubs)
Blakey, Mills, Heeney, Wicks, Bell, Campbell, Gulden, Jack, Hiscox, Parks, Foote, Naismith and Robinson

GWS
(21 who I think have played AFL, but might have missed a couple)
Harry Cunningham, Zac Williams, Steele, Dougal Howard, Finlayson, Hopper, Kennedy, Himmelberg, Flynn, Sam Murray, Setterfield, Perryman, Cumming, Himmelberg, Sproule, Spargo, Brander, Briggs, Green, Highmore, Cooper Sharman

Gold Coast
Bowes, Buderick, Grahem, Rosas Jnr, Weller, Pruess, Bailey Scott

So overall it seems the GWS academy has produced the most and the most to the broader AFL (at least after trading)

GWS did have full access to Albury, Riverina and Sunraysia zones which are quite good breeding zones for AFL players. This is now changed but may have skewed the tally.

The academy still operates there, but they only have rookie access now. Guys like Spargo and Brander were removed from the academy because of those changes (in their draft year in their case). But a fair few guys did academy + TAC Cup (non-boarding) early on so it's beefed up a bit by guys like Setterfield and the previously mentioned two but not heaps.

Pretty sure Samson Ryan has played a game,

Also missing Liam Dawson, Elliot Himmelberg, Reuben Williams, Jacob Allison and the other Wagner (they both got drafted and played)

so I make 22 for the Lions Academy, but half of them at other clubs

Yeah I did it from memory and a few guys like Dawson and Williams I couldnt remember if they played or not. It was a pretty rough list following a discussion of quality vs quantity - most players versus top level talent. Sydney and GWS have potentially the most top level but we had higher total players

I think I counted Himmelberg under GWS but I could have been getting confused between them and where they did juniors

Himmelberg went to both academies - GWS for most of the time, us in his draft year.

Leon Cameron to head up coaching for the Swans academy. Fair investment in their future.

Cameron secures new role, turns down Bombers
