Thats the kid that won the medal for best player at the national carnival. Having watched 4 of the QLD games, it is a mystery how that happened. Decent user of the footy, but sleeps with three lights on.

LOL. Petty common in the junior club footy I have watched over the years, it really does stick out like dogs testicles when a kid attacks the ball and man with vigour.

I’ve never heard of the term, and google doesn’t help.

"He sleeps with the lights on" = coward/scared; in an AFL context I'd suggest avoids contact.

"Sleeps with three lights on" = really avoids contact.

Not a huge fan of describing kids like that myself. Unfortunately there's much much worse said on BF and social media.

Cooper Hodge is def Grade 9 this year too

yeah, probably a bit rough on a teenager in hindsight. Lets just say, there would need to be a change in competitiveness around physical contact and going when its your turn for that player to advance further than L2 academy and school footy plaudits.

That I agree with.

Does anyone have informed views on the quality of the local AIC schools competition and how that fits as a meaningful part of the talent pathway in Brisbane alongside club juniors and other elite (Academy/rep) level competitions? My son is in junior school at one of the AIC schools and it seems like numbers and interest in AFL are growing rapidly (in spite of legacy rugby union biases) but I've not seen any First XVIII matches to have any gauge on what the quality is like. Welcome any opinions or experiences from those who in the know.

I went to a game a month or so ago and posted this in another thread. >

I went down to Yeronga yesterday afternoon and watched a firsts schoolboys game(1st time I have watched that competition) ie. St Laurence's College V Villanova College, I was quite impressed with the standard in patches, intense physical game and there was a very good crowd of students and parents in attendance making a lot of noise.

It's not a legitimate pathway as yet, but it won't take long.

The standard is extremely high, but not quite at club level standard yet.

However, the resources of these private schools will soon see them becoming attractive options for good footballers to actualy sway a decision around where kids might go to school.

Thanks M Malice and Miller1971 for your thoughts 👍. Do you think it’s a positive that the comp is in summer T1 so that it doesn’t clash with club footy or can you see it ever shifting to winter and needing to run alongside the club comp?
My grandson tells me that currently term 2 is soccer so can't see it changing anytime soon... although you never know, if it clashed with club footy it might be too much of a time commitment for most kids with 2 games per week as well as the extra training, not taking into account the more important factor of school work.

from the outside looking in, I'd say they have the balance just right.

Let the other codes compete with club sport

Was actaully a pretty good game, though the Lions persisting qwith 19 year olds who don't stand up in tough conditions like those is a bit of a mystery.

Josh Cooper is a liability, how did that bloke play Allies last year? what is purpose of taking him into u18 games when they are leaving out quality 17 and 18 year olds?

for those interested, 16 yr old Ryan Gilder made his senior QAFL debut on the weekend.

Game is here and he was #8 playing on a wing (he would never have played there before in his life, but good way to be eased into it)

Magpies team also features Owen Collins, Josh Cooper and Elijah Glass who are all playing L3 academy for the Lions. Collins arguably the best player on the ground and Glass had some huge plays at crucial times.

Wow that’s impressive both for the kid to be ready for that level at that age and also for the club to be willing to play them up.

My personal opinion is that for the elite kids in each system (except for of Vic Metro which has the depth for them to be playing very strong junior footy each week) that playing senior footy (on the proviso they’re physically able to cope) is an important part of their development ahead of the draft.

They would be playing against men in country football at that age.
