Understand Mike Sheahan has rated us the best team going around outside the top 8. Appears in tomiorrw's Herald Sun.
Love to see his reasoning...oyher than the obvious...that being we are currently 9th.

If true, it must be hard for commentators and so called experts to admit that... considering most of them had us earmarked for the spoon or at the very least extremely close to it.

His reasoning would probably have something to do with a jump from 16th to 9th or the fact RFC won only 3 games last year, as aposed to to 10.5 this year.

Add to that the players in your squad who have come of age plus the fact that you'd be playing finals had a few little, at the time insignificant, decisions gone your way, and I think he's got every reason to rate RFC as the best side outside the 8.

Who would've thought that the 9th placed team is the best team outside the top 8. Top notch journalism. No doubt this should put him in contention for an award of some description.

Good old numbnuts Sheehan F***n genius that fella.:D

This is not a big deal. Mike Sheenan is a ****ing fruit loop. Of course we are the best team outside the 8.... we are ninth. Grats mike you ****ing dropkick you are learning maths.

Sheehan is an idiot. Earlier in the year he had 'the 8 will remain unchanged'. It didn't.

He has to have the easiest job in the world.

(a) Make stupid forecasts so far ahead that no-one remembers them when he inevitably gets them wrong.
(b) Write ridiculous articles stating the obvious like 'the 9th placed team is the best team to not make the 8'.

Plus, he knows no more about football than anyone else; he probably knows less.

Spot on Dan, he is an absolute loser who people think knows the answer to everything. They will be shattered soon enough to know he knows no more then kyle sandilands.

A TOUCH harsh, Danny boy! He's paid to have opinions, make predictions, forecasts etc. Yes, he can get them wrong, but we all do.
You telling me that you pick eight winners every week and forecast the top eight ahead of everyone else?
Newspapers and the media in general would be better not to run predictions and tips at all, but we the general public lap it up and it serves for good banter later on.
Not an exact science, too many invariables such as injuries can play a part.
I wouldn't be too harsh.
But as I said in my initial post, I was keen to see what his reasoning was.
There would be plenty who would say Carlton is ahead of us I'm sure...and possibly even Brisbane.
His reasoning appeared sound!

Mike, Mike, Mike ... sorry but anything this guy says it utter crap .. he doesnt stand by anything he says, EVER .. half way through this year he said north melb were finished .. look what happend ?? he has no idea ..

sheahan has a soft spot for us. Very often he tips us in 50-50 games or even when we are underdogs

I agree. Quite often has us sneaking in for 7th-8th in pre-season predictions.

Don't know what he sees in us to have any underlying positivity there? We haven't seen anything to crow about for decades?

Whichever way Mike goes with us he always cops a caning from Tigerheads. :D

I've picked up on that 'soft spot' too, was relatively positive about us even during our dire 2007 season.

Call it harsh if you want, but he and that other goose Patrick Smith annoy me the way they pontificate with the attitude of 'I am so clever' when they know no more about footy than the averge footy fan.

In the example of the top 8 remaining unchanged, I do believe it's idiotic to make a statement like that with less than half of the season gone. Don't misunderstand what I was saying. I never said I could pick the top 8 (though I did tip us for 9th this year!). If Sheehan was so damned good he *would* get it right. But he never does. Same with his top 50 players list. Same 50 players year in year out. Guys like Dermott Brereton have a way better handle on what's going on than Sheehan. Yet Sheehan carries himself around like guru. He isn't, and I stand by that.

I don't mind people writing opinion pieces. But there is nothing insightful about what he writes. In fact, despite being annoying, Caroline Wilson at least digs up stories from time to time. Sheehan just writes fluff.

Like I said, Sheehan knows no more about footy than the average footy fan.

I assume this is following his statements on On the Couch and he did support his opinion with some factual observations. That was about 2 nanoseconds before Walls said he didnt agree and that Carlton were easily the best outside the 8 for him with "my man Judd". It was actually a pleasant change to have someone in our corner. Sometimes I think we can't all see the forest for the trees because we become so intraspective and pessimistic because of the recent past whch means that non Richmond supporters see stuff we are retiscent to achknowlege. Maybe just in the circles I am in but there is a general feeling amongst my mates and acquaintances that we are well and truly on the rise. Like everyone else I am hopeful but dont want to get say it too loud just yet Only time will tell who is right.

How can u say hes a loser when i can pretty much guarantee he is doing a lot better than any of us.. You would love to be him.. Talking about football and getting paid big dollars for it.. Its envy on your behalf, nothing more..:D

Pretty much on the money there.

Tugga! Was that positivity I detected?!?
The way i look at it Fish .... with the obvious exception of Geelong , are we that far off the rest of the pack ?;)

I see absolutely no reason whatsoever next year that we can`t have a real tilt and top four is not beyond our reach . Hawks are a one or two man band coached very well but have thier flaws . Bulldogs for mine are a paper tiger . An awful lot of teams are in re-build mode .... our time is now and we have to grab it

At this point in our history it is "VITAL" we get our football dept. right because we are on the cusp of genuine period of sustained success if we are managed right .

Definitely. I was expecting us to scrape into the 8 next year, but considering we exceeded expectations a bit this year and nearly made it, I can't see why we can't push up even further to the top half of the bottom 8. And if you get that far, there's no reason why you can't go a spot or two further. Having said that I doubt we'll make top 4 next year, but I can't see us missing the 8.
