Thomson. Not Thompson.

From the AFL Prospectus 2008...

'Thomson has showed signs he can make it as an inside midfielder at the highest level despite playing only 21 games in his three seasons and struggling for game time. He made six appearances at AFL level in 2007, ranking third at the Power in disposals per minute as he won the ball more than 15 times in each of those games. Despite an average of just 71 minutes game time he averaged 5 clearances per game, giving him the best rate of any player in 2007 at winning clearances given how much time he spent on the field. While his kicking was again in the poor category, as an inside player he fed out more than twice as many handballs as kicks and also averaged three tackles per game.'

Very good inside. Is tough and hard at the ball and is a tackling machine which would help us. He is probably like Coughlan.

Would add good depth to our midfield...

just what I want .....:thumbsu: pick 42 would be awesome......

No one who can't kick thanks.

Coughlan was never a strong kicker, the work done in the packs feeding it out would cancel out poor disposal i think. alot of his kicks would most likely be at a stoppage just banged on the boot and kicked forward. another strong clearance player in the side would put us up near the top of the tree in the coming years you would reckon. Foley, Cotchin and Lids are exceptional clearance players.

Tuck used to be as bad as this kid kicking wise, but we were able to teach him how to get into space to dispose of it easier.

Foley to a lesser degree was a poor kick once too, now he's great.

I remember in 2006 Foley was the #1 player in the comp for clearance/TOG ratio. Well in 2007 Thomson won this title!

Players who are first to the ball and win clearances are so valuable. He might turn a couple over, but I'd rather a player win the hard ball and dish it out to a running McMahon than to have squibs in the centre square who don't even win it.

The risk of turning it over is less than the risk of not winning it at all.

There's a thread on the port board where someone digs up a quote from the 2004 draft. Thomson said Richmond had spoken to him before the draft and were going to use a highish pick to get him back then. Port got in before us at pick 11. Sounds like we've been keen on him for a while.

If Adam Thomson is so similar to Coggs - but with better legs - then what does this mean fo Coggs opportunities / future at Tigerland? Is Thomson insurance for Coggs or replacement?

Port fans rate him but Chocco didn't. If we give up #42, then its worth the shot. It could be another Morton. If it doesn't work out, it was only #42.

We'll still have picks #8 and #26.

AFL website reckons the deal is virtually done. Thomson for pick 42. Now we should trade one of our fringe players for someone else's 3rd rounder. When is the last time richmond didn't trade for an opposition player?

Disappointing the trade didn't involve Cleve Hughes and pick 22.

Thomson set to be announced a Tiger

RICHMOND is set to announce the first trade of trade week, sending its third-round draft pick to Port Adelaide in exchange for Adam Thomson.

The 22-year-old inside midfielder has spend the past four years at the Power, but has played just 28 games in that time, and only managed seven this year.

Richmond's general manager of football, Craig Cameron, said the deal was almost done, with pick 42 likely to be the price.

"It's progressed a fair way – I think it's just a matter of us sorting it out with Port Adelaide, which I don't think is going to be a sticking point," he said.

"Probably he'll be for our third-round pick."

Ruckmen are the big talking point of the week so far, with West Coast's Mark Seaby looking for more game time and Dean Laidley throwing Kangaroo Hamish McIntosh into the mix, but Cameron said the asking price was looking too high in the current environment.

"I think that the clubs are looking to see if they can get first-round picks for the ruckmen they're trying to trade, and we'd like to hang onto our first selection.

"I don't know if anything will loosen up as the week goes on, but I think it's going to be very difficult for them to move ruckmen for first-round picks.

"Everyone wants to go to this draft."

Not sure about this deal. Pick 42 isn't giving away too much, but...what makes us think Thomson will be any better for Richmond than he was for Port? They were shit last year and he couldn't get a game. Was apparently pretty ordinary in the SANFL and is regarded as slow with questionable disposal by foot. Why do we want/need him?

My favourite player. Fair to say im shattered hes leaving. And its Thomson. No P.

Very good inside midfielder. Gets his hands on the ball first, keeps his arms clear and dishes out a handball. His lack of foot skills is overrated. He isnt a disastrous kick. Hes just a stock standard kick. Very good kick for goal. Probably lacks pace and apparently AFL fitness, but that could be improved on. Hes the sort of player that will become a cult hero. Probably similar in style to a Coughlan/Cross.

Played 15 SANFL games this year and picked up 326 disposals, 76 marks and 23 goals. 21 disposals a game. Kicked 4 goals twice. Picked up 35 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals in a semi final for Sturt.

Treat him well, he deserves it.
