If a guy who gave nearly 50 years of service to football in SA doesn't deserve a stand named after them then who does?

What was his playing career like?

Largely in the amateurs as a result of North refusing to clear to him to Sturt.

Well there's the answer. Stands get named after those who do great work on the field, not administrators, that's the sort of corrupt shit you'd expect from Indian cricket, or Carlton.

I suggest you go have a look at what he's done before you write uneducated stuff like that.

Seems not all South Australians are so fond of the decision though.

As I said, stands should be named for on-field deeds, I don't see any from him in the SANFL.

Got to disagree. administrators are underrated. Some of them have been instrumental in the growth of the game.

And Basheer is one of them. Instrumental in getting Football Park off the ground, 25 years SANFL president (overseeing some of the biggest changes in SA football). Heck he's even in the Hall of Fame! He's one of the worthiest administrators to get part of a stand named after him.

Also, the stand naming set up is:

1 x Power great (Wanganeen)
1 x Crows great (Ruiccuto)
1 x Magpies great (Williams)
1 x SANFL great (Oatey)
1 x Adminstrator (Basheer)

Seems to be the fairest way to distribute the names to me.

Agreed, but there are other areas of the stadium that can be named after them, stands are hugely significant in such a way that many worthy players (still the most important aspect of any sport) miss out, one those opportunities used on an administrator seems a waste.

Yeah, I agree with that. They should give Max Basheer a room in the Eastern Stand and whack Barrie Robran's name up there instead.

The grandstands should be for people who have performed on-field. Anyone else can be remembered with a bar or a conference room. It's kind of fitting. Bars and conference rooms are where the corporates spend most of their time anyway.

Wouldn't be surprised if the actual fence-to-fence dimensions haven't changed since the Western Stand was built, but the goal-to-goal dimensions are shorter than (a) I expected and (b) they were for Round 24, 2011. Although, they've taken away the old bricked areas for the sight-screens, so maybe the goals will be in the same place but it will look like more space between them and the fence.
The original fence to fence dimensions were 190m x 125m. Not sure how that got approved

The new fence to fence dimensions are 183m x 134m, which is more suitable for AFL :)

Did not want AFL football here in SA - Fact.

Completely agree with this. Administrators should not been seen on a playing field. They do all their stuff behind the scenes.

Change Oatey to Robran and you have a deal

Basheer did okay for a fat little Lebanese B grade footballer with a speech impediment, I'll give him that, but the esteem he's held by many in SA is undeserving. We are only just unraveling his "legacy" now.

Interesting way of analysing his work as SANFL president.....

I've come to realise that port supporters don't like Basheer

It's considered rude to speak ill of the dead, they won't blame your own for getting it so wrong so they have to blame someone for not getting into the AFL in 1990.

How's the eastern stand coming along?
someone put a photo of it on the crows board.
530-535 are done, 536 I think is done, 537 is about 80% done and 538 is about 10% done.
Stand names are up too.

If you want interior, I'll ask a guy at work next time we're both on.
He does 3 jobs, 1 with me at night, 2 during day (same employer) as a contractor and one of those 2 are currently at Adelaide Oval. He had been off site for a few weeks but went back in yesterday.

Thanking you for bringing the conversation back to the Oval. My work here is done.

lol, I didn't even realise it went offtopic.
I just tuned out to that useless stuff.

Port Adelaide are going to have a parachutist fly into the ground with a port flag for the showdown... I wonder if the 200k crow will be right behind it ;)

Hi, been discussing the move to Addy oval with friends , can anybody give us a direct answer , how many car parks (directly ) available at our new home AO , versus FP including the shops adjacent , what we meen is let's say within a minutes walk ?
