I don't dispute we have been hard to deal with at times but people just make shit up to suit this agenda
What the welcher said was BS

But I do recall Melbourne being interested in Myers back then, they got Dom Tyson instead.

In a year where you got bent over for Crameri and by the AFLs trade sanctions, you take pick two and run.

Imo Dodoro is too stubborn and arrogant for his clubs own good sometimes, he does draft well though normally, il give him that, but if you just build through the draft then you'll fall behind.

I was surprised you guys were easy to deal with about Cooney FWIW.

My personal favourite was when they offered up Darren Walsh (who was just delisted) and their 2nd round pick for a 30yo Scott West fresh off his 4th or 5th B&F.

I think you need to provide a statuatory declaration from all parties involved or the OP will just dismiss it as not true.

Dodo is clearly harder to deal with then others, and he acts like he is the smartest man in the room from what I see/read. Wonder if its helped or hindered us over the last decade?
Haven't won a final for over a decade with a current list that is average at best (and is hamstrung from significant list improvements because they are so difficult to trade with). Compare that to the 2 decades before, when they were a 4-premiership superpower of the competition and a magnificently run organisation. He is a symptom of the poor mindset at that club since 2002.

Hindered

14 wins and bottom half of the top 8 is your best result with Elimination finals losses there.

You've always had a great spine, but you lack x factor and midfield depth imo. Trading for needs seems to be your problem going forward and you've only relied on drafting primarily to replenish your list, now players want out and you've only brought in Cooney, Chapman (retired), Gwilt, McKernan, Giles and kids since the ASADA saga ripped your club apart.

Teams who have won flags recently have a good core set up from drafting well for a few years before hand, they then went out and got needs to propel them further into premiership contention.

Etc

Collingwood in 2009 getting Ball and Jolly on top of the great established list they had. Sydney had a great established list and drafted well too, but Kennedy and McGlynn offered them something they didn't have on the cheap, same with Mumford. Hawthorns traded ins are well documented, but after 2008 they got in Smith, Shoenmakers, Stratton, Puopolo, Shiels etc later in the draft with Smith being pick 19 in the Gold Coast compromised draft as the highest draft pick they've had since then, they don't waste picks and they identify needs extremely well.

I believe Geelong will be the last truly great team to win a flag based solely around a drafting routine. The only established gun they brought in was Ottens in 2004 that helped them to 3 flags, they didn't trade in anyone between 05-08, they kept their drafting thing going and brought in mature aged guys in Taylor and Podsiadly through the draft who made an impact with them immediately.

I see Gold Coast failing in the future as they're way too shy when it comes to the trade table, now kids finally want out of there, will they replace them with needs? I reckon they won't as Scott Clayton is in charge there who will probably head to the draft and piss it away on skinny outside mids/flankers like he did at the Dogs. Look at Freo also, they "apparently" tried getting in every KPF but failed to land one, now they'll overpay for McCarthy who's ok, but I don't see him as being the main man, he seems to be a better support tall instead.

GWS could be ok though, they have enough assets and will gain enough assets for them to get the needs the need soon enough.

Could be ok? Haha, with their list and what they have managed to do with trades they are on course to be a powerhouse.

Adelaide, WCE, BL and Port all won flags within 8 years, they all finished top 4 within 4-5 years of being in the comp.

Where do GC and GWS sit? Why is it taking them long? They should have among the greatest depth out of everyone as their list size and asset size are greater, but a few injuries sees them in the pits. Imo GWS have as many plodders on their list as other clubs, but their plodders were taken in the 1st and 2nd rounds, etc Sumner, Plowman, Buntine (playing games now but he ain't pick 5 worthy).

I find it bs tbh other clubs would be doing same if they were in Essendon position.

Isn't the point that, over the long run, every club is in the same position, wanting some players, losing some players, it's not just about the recent players leaving Essendon.

I'm not even convinced Essendon are losing anymore players than other clubs, but perhaps it feels that way given the hard few years you guys have had to endure?

You're probably right but... at the end of the day these are players from Essendons best side that clubs are getting so the club has every right to ask what's a fair deal.

Other clubs are creative with their dealing, there have been many examples provided here by posters where Dodoro has dragged things out over trade week not being helpful affecting clubs doing deals elsewhere

If Essendon really wants Billings in this Carlisle deal then chuck pick 4 on the table then, it is a weak draft after all and Billings would give your forward half a boost, it would make St Kilda think twice I imagine (though it is well overs from your end).

Essendon fans are hard to deal with

Also,
Carlton are hard to deal with expecting first rounder for yarran. Bunch of arse holes

They have struggled because GWS, unlike most new clubs that you mentioned, went the youth route. When they started in the comp, they built there entire team around the draft and young guns like Scully, Ward, Davis, etc....

They were very raw for a few years. They are now starting to find their feet. They would have been top 8 this year, if Mummy remained fit. They really need to find a mature reserve Ruckman.

I disagree with "could be ok". They are going to be a gun side. I wont say they will definitely win a premiership, as that is not a given, but they will be top four over the next few years.

I dont want to derail this entertaining thread though, we are probably off topic a bit.

i don't even get why anyone cares
Essendon and Dodoro's tactics are cause for their own concern. Both seem quite happy.
In their defence, we haven't lost out on a deal in recent memory other than probably taking in Mark Williams when JPK available that year.
And still, Carlisle for Lovett (and whatever Carlisle nets us).
Langford & Cooney for Ryder
Merrett for Crameri
Didn't hand over Hurley and a 1st rd pick for Caddy
If memory serves - Gleeson for Monfries

I know St.Kilda showed some interest in Myers but that was 2013. So it cant have been pick one and he was ruled off limits by Essendon.

But a two minute google search tells us is that Dodo would not even entertain a trade for Myers even if pick 2 was on the table (AFL website and Melbourne football manager imply the Demons at least considered it as in the potential negotiations ... wow).

"On Monday, Demons football manager Josh Mahoney made it quite clear that the club's first-round pick - pick two - was on the trade table, but at the right price. David Myers is someone we've shown some interest in"

"However, Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said Myers would be with the Bombers in 2014. He's an Essendon player. He is contracted and won't be going anywhere," Dodoro said.

Of course it is the clubs right to hold onto a player. But if pick 2 (Kelly, Billings or Bontempelli) was even remotely on the table for Myers, I think every other club bar Essendon would take that deal, throw in extras and run as fast as they could in the other direction
Myers is a highly regarded leader of a club. Trading him at a time of crisis would have been short sighted, and we would have lost a proven class midfielder.
