With the AFL considerring changing the rules in 2014 with less interchange and also throwing the ball up around the ground next year, they are preparing to get rid of congestion. This then begs the question should we be recruiting aerobically gifted players (athletic type) or hard inside explosive types?

I realise we need one or two of the inside mids but going forward with minimal interchange the guys that are aerobically gifted with big tanks can stay on the ground longer. I personally think that we should be targetting one inside mid and the rest guys that can run all day (that have good skills of course). Next year forward I think the game will evolve again and even more so when interchange is restricted.

Ideally both at once I would have thought (see C. Judd). I'm not sure if this rule change will effect the recruiters taking a lot of things into consideration: character, kicking, engine, courage etc. etc. The next Naitanui will certainly be highly sort after though.

Players that are exceptional in a 1 on 1 contest...

Whether that be in the air or on the ground...

Players like Yarran, Gibbs are the future because they didn't have tanks when they arrived but 1 on 1 they rarely get beaten...

Tanks can be made, skill you're born with...!

What about a willingness to get hurt if necessary? I am an admirer of both, but I'm not sure they tick every box.

Getting hurt doesn't count when you throw the ball out in front of players like this because they make there opponents look like dills and usually leave them looking around to see where they've gone!

We have hard heads like Robbo to do that, as long as Robbo realises he MUST give it every time he gets it to the silk...

Gibbs is suck a hack, weakest guy ever, dont think ive ever seen him willing to get hurt, we should cut him, his skills and intelligence mean nothing because he's a super squib and this is evident through youtube videos, conclcluive proof he's worthless

I am a fan of Gibbs. I don't think contested footy is a strength. Nice to take the extreme line however.

Im just tired of all the Gibbs basher's it doesnt amount to anything

Well I'm certainly not a Gibbs basher. The debate started through what we should be identifying in potential draftees, I think a good side needs a little bit of silk and a whole lot of hardness(as long as they can hit a target).

Being tough doesnt mean you have to bash and crash alone. Someone who takes players on like Yarran is tough in another way because he isnt scared of taking guys on, other toughness is the Bradley kind that bust a gut running all day. It comes in various forms, I believe on of MM strengths is to identify the strengths of players and get the most from them, hence very happy with Gibbs staying at Carlton as he is all class with ball in hand as is Yarran.

I think there's a difference between 'tough' and 'confidence to take players on'. I love Yaz but tough? Not sure about that. I think with Yaz, Bryce and Jeffy, we have enough 'silk' players for the time being. Let's address the thing that wins flags.

We have a few 'explosive' players with no tank - Yarran, Garlett, Betts. The club were hoping at various stages all could step up and play midfield but it didn't quite work out that way.

We need a few more Kade Simpson types - run all day, neat skills, not afraid to lay a tackle. As we'd be hoping Kane Lucas and Josh Bootsma can ultimately each hold down a wing. Too good to stagnate (when not spending 3/4 of the game as a sub :() on a HFF/HBF respectively as I fear we've done with Gibbs.

Yeah spot on, though I think Bootsma will eventually play that half back flank role like Maxwell/Scarlett third man up etc. I think this was our most vital type of player missing this year, I hope Laidlers knee will stand up next year on that point. You never know in the mean time Bootsma could possibly play wing, rangey tall wingman, I cant wait til he gets some games under his belt, I really like the look of him as he reads the play very well.

Bootsma's draft assessment by Hughes suggested he would start on the HBF, with an eye to playing him as a run-with midfielder as his aerobic capacity increased.

Has it become racist to post that Mexican tortilla girl?

Then who will set Walker up for another screamer? :(

Robinson isn't as silky as Yarran, Murphy and Gibbs, yet his kicking seems to gets a bum rap from you. Reminds me of the knocks on Walker being a hack who can't kick.

I love Robbo, and am sure he will be more composed going 2013 forward, which will improve his disposal no end.
