The first of the multi-bye rounds is done, and it was a mixed bag of close finishes and thumpings. Let’s go wrapping…

Lions v Bombers, Thursday night: Yet another Brisbane win where they had a scare but ultimately held the opposition at bay. They’ve got a remarkable ability to just do enough, and it sees them right up at the pointy end of the ladder despite seemingly spending very little petrol to get there. The Bombers can hold their heads fairly high in this one though - horribly undermanned and a long way behind early; most were tipping a 15 goal loss at that point. Huge effort to come back and hit the front in the last quarter.

Pies v Hawks, Friday night: Is there anybody that can stop this Collingwood side? They’ve just blown away another (albeit out of form) premiership aspirant and fellow MCG tenant and barely looked like they got out of second gear after half time. Hope they’re peaking too early because I don’t know who beats them otherwise.

Suns v Dockers, Saturday arvo: Nobody has been more critical of the 2025 Dockers than me, but I’m now officially paying attention. That’s three wins on the trot, the latest at Carrara against a team that is very hard to beat there. Well placed for a post-bye finals tilt now. Back in the conversation.

Giants v Tigers, Saturday twilight: Oh boy, the Giants got the mother of all scares. If the Tigers had kicked straight in the first half the game would have been over but somehow the Orange Team scrambled over the line. Reckon they might need a week off, but their bye is still four weeks away. A “home” game against an ordinary Power side next week will have to do.

Swans v Crows, Saturday night: Yikes, speaking of a side that needs a week off! I knew the Swans were in trouble going into this one, although I’m not sure anyone was predicting 90 points worth of trouble. Well played Crows for sinking the boot right in when the opportunity presented. Fully deserving of their lofty spot on the ladder right now.

Demons v Saints, Sunday arvo: The Dees pressure was awful, yet they somehow had 17 more inside 50s and seven more scoring shots, so it was their inaccuracy that cost them as much as anything. Still, when you let smooth movers like Hill and Wanganeen-Milera run around without heat all afternoon you don’t deserve to be winning.

Eagles v Cats, Sunday evening: The Eagles were blown away in the first quarter but then stuck to their guns superbly to fight back and close to within a goal early in the last term. They ran out of legs after that though, as the Cats cut loose with 7 of the last 8 goals. Still, fair to say both sides got a fair bit out of this game.

Don’t forget to post your Liked, Learnt, Hated below… along with any other thoughts you had about Round 12!

Honestly a real round of upsets and unexpected results. Collingwood and Adelaide winning comfortably are the only games you'd say most people would have predicted accurately.

Brisbane, GWS and Geelong - expected blowout/demolitions that never happened.

Gold Coast and Melbourne - expected wins that never happened.

Good performances from plenty of underdogs all around.

I picked the Swans :$.

Knowing our past, I expected us to stink it up and make the Swans look like the first half of last year.

The Swans have a number of issues at the moment, but that was our best win in quite some time, especially away against an opponent Nicks has struggled against.

Liked:
A big win on the road against a side Nicks hadn't beaten
Rachele's soccer assist. Commentators bringing up his soccer background will be the new Pendlebury and basketball
Freo - a very mature win and a big step forward for them
Essendon, Richmond and West Coast all providing good efforts in games that were expected to be complete blow-outs even if they didn't get it done.

Learnt:
As above, the Swans have some deep issues at the moment. Still way too early to right off Cox. A top-heavy list and psychological scarring are bigger issues (key injuries/suspensions haven't helped either), although if these results continue next year, then you can start to question him.

Hated:
Riewoldt having a sook over Milera's comments. The media want honest characters and no robotic answers yet complain when it happens. They don't know what they want, even the Swans had no issues with the comments.
Rachele's flop, and the umpires who keep falling for this shit. Mind you, maybe consider it a bit of karma after Taylor Adams last year.

Hated: the Milera blow up. Even if he came out in a presser I’d think it was an overreaction but the fact that he didn’t even say ‘they’re a rabble’ and he simply said ‘yeah out there on the field they were a bit all over the place and they seemed a bit of a rabble at times’ or whatever it was - just a real throwaway line and in its own way it was actually a compliment to how good the Swans normally are because he was genuinely surprised by how disorganised they were, just makes it the most blown out of proportion issue in history

This is why media interviews are a joke now. Players will just be cliche and say boring comments it’s a complete waste of time. Show a little of personality or honesty and the media try to pile on.

Swans were a rabble. I’m sure Swans would say that too. So what’s the problem? Upset Milera was honest?

It's only the media that gets upset (translation: stirs the pot so its a talking point). Why do we actually care what they think? I haven't seen angry supporters from any club.

Liked: Winning, Bailey Smith and the traditional playing strip.

Learnt: The AFL finally got some goolies and made some changes at the administrative level.
The Swans are toast!

Hated: Poor Tigers losing in the last few minutes.

Shocked to be sitting here:
That someone, anyone would take issue with the description of Swans being a rabble. It was clear to all.

Hated:
The Ward injury, and likely abrupt end to his career.

Liked:
Tiges having a serious crack.
Pies and Crows were scintillating.

Add Ward's injury to hated. A sad way to end what's been a great career having been such a warrior for them.

HATED: Cal Ward doing his ACL. Such an unjust ending for a warrior.
Really was.... just one of those players you absolutely know has given 300% over his whole career. Would have been instrumental in establishing the culture at the Giants that has held them in great shape over recent years, and would have come into the season hoping for a last crack at the elusive flag.

Was heartbreaking watching him on the side lines but as the true champion he is he put it aside to lift the team, good luck in the future Cal.

Liked:
Our win. Lots to love - probably no passengers.
Eagles showing some fight - bring back the house of pain!! Even if we or they can’t win every week, make whoever’s travelling earn it and dread the road trip!
Seeing Fyfe back out there, not looking out of his depth and actually contributing solidly.
Essendon and Richmond having a red hot crack when underdogs.

Learnt:
Umpiring is cooked. We got pinged for deliberate out of bounds far too often for a wet game. One of them was even off of a clear smother!
Nepo babies was a fun term to use in the game day thread. Mostly tongue in cheek but still fun.
Sydney seem gone.

Hated:
Ward. Devastating
The protected zone and 50s. Unless a player makes a move for the guy with the ball just let it go!
Not a lot else to hate this weekend
