The first of the multi-bye rounds is done, and it was a mixed bag of close finishes and thumpings. Let’s go wrapping…
Lions v Bombers, Thursday night: Yet another Brisbane win where they had a scare but ultimately held the opposition at bay. They’ve got a remarkable ability to just do enough, and it sees them right up at the pointy end of the ladder despite seemingly spending very little petrol to get there. The Bombers can hold their heads fairly high in this one though - horribly undermanned and a long way behind early; most were tipping a 15 goal loss at that point. Huge effort to come back and hit the front in the last quarter.
Pies v Hawks, Friday night: Is there anybody that can stop this Collingwood side? They’ve just blown away another (albeit out of form) premiership aspirant and fellow MCG tenant and barely looked like they got out of second gear after half time. Hope they’re peaking too early because I don’t know who beats them otherwise.
Suns v Dockers, Saturday arvo: Nobody has been more critical of the 2025 Dockers than me, but I’m now officially paying attention. That’s three wins on the trot, the latest at Carrara against a team that is very hard to beat there. Well placed for a post-bye finals tilt now. Back in the conversation.
Giants v Tigers, Saturday twilight: Oh boy, the Giants got the mother of all scares. If the Tigers had kicked straight in the first half the game would have been over but somehow the Orange Team scrambled over the line. Reckon they might need a week off, but their bye is still four weeks away. A “home” game against an ordinary Power side next week will have to do.
Swans v Crows, Saturday night: Yikes, speaking of a side that needs a week off! I knew the Swans were in trouble going into this one, although I’m not sure anyone was predicting 90 points worth of trouble. Well played Crows for sinking the boot right in when the opportunity presented. Fully deserving of their lofty spot on the ladder right now.
Demons v Saints, Sunday arvo: The Dees pressure was awful, yet they somehow had 17 more inside 50s and seven more scoring shots, so it was their inaccuracy that cost them as much as anything. Still, when you let smooth movers like Hill and Wanganeen-Milera run around without heat all afternoon you don’t deserve to be winning.
Eagles v Cats, Sunday evening: The Eagles were blown away in the first quarter but then stuck to their guns superbly to fight back and close to within a goal early in the last term. They ran out of legs after that though, as the Cats cut loose with 7 of the last 8 goals. Still, fair to say both sides got a fair bit out of this game.
