It had everything to do with sensationalism.
The rest of your post has been pretty thoroughly rebutted, but this comment especially sticks in my craw.

The degree of negativity describing Lyon's gameplan has increased over time. First it was defensive football, then negative, then people were describing it as boring/painful to watch etc. Claiming that it is "destroying the game" or similar is not only hyperbole, but completely ignores contextual reasons or mitigating factors which led to this individual low scoring match.

So the striking or over emotive language used, devoid of any contextual consideration is the very definition of sensationalism. It was a vulgar and shallow attention grab.

EDIT: actually scrap dat I am gonna get a little pissy. St Kilda went 14-0 in 2009, playing high scoring, high energy football. This culminated in a win against the also undefeated Geelong at Etihad stadium (who were still relatively at the height of their powers). It was a thrilling match (I was there) and maybe one of the most exciting and high standard home & away games I have ever seen. They narrowly lost the GF that year and drew in 2010. Sure they didn't snag a GF, but that does not support your outrageous attempt at historical revisionism. Stick to the ****ing facts when making an argument.

Great post Divide !! Mark McClure is a knob jockey of the highest order, apart from playing a few games for the Bluebaggers back in the 80s what is his contribution to the great game of AFL since ??His special comments/commentry on games is doing a lot more damage than R.Lyons game plan..seriously has anyone heard this mono toned, boring ,over critical tool on 6wf its enough to make ya change stations. He is up there with Terry Alderman as the most pessamistic ,negative special comments going around

A couple of weeks ago all the media were getting stuck into Melbourne.
Then they moved on and the biggest story became west coast ducks.
Now its boring Lyon.

As soon as we win they will move on to another story and blow it massively out of proportion.

I'm not sure. We've got knuckle draggers like Gossage and Julian De Stoop refferring to Lyon as Judas on twitter and tittering like school girls. It seems more than that. It's become very personal and unsavory I think

The club's an easy target and continually sets itself up to be one.

As Gossage says, winning is the best tonic. I'm not blaming Lyon - it has become evident the rebuild has been seriously botched.

I told you this years ago and you failed to see it. Until we could get a young midfield growing together (a lot like Richmond now) we aren't going to be a serious finals contender.

The club though keeps drafting these dud flankers. Pitt? Suban? Even Hill? Hill is being torn to shreds at the moment because we have no other decent young midfielders to tag that could handle it better. Hill is the type of player you bring in when you already have 2 or 3 good midfielders there and he can just cruise with them, a bit like Judd early on in his career.

This whole concept of "Drafting the best at your pick" is just stupid. You draft what you need and we have always needed a decent midfield. If we had have tanked right in 2008 and 2009 we could be right on our way now with an A quality midfield prior to the GC and GWS raping the picks but yeah. Now we need a miracle if we want to have success in the next 5 years.

The way I see it is it's easier to trade in a decent KPP , especially when your midfield is awesome. Just slot them right into your team and they'll start kicking goals with the massive and well directed supply. Whereas if you draft in midfielders since they are the engine room it usually takes time for them to gel with the ruck and other mids. Given where we came from I don't think we should have been worrying too much about KPPs in those 2008/2009 drafts (not that we did) but we just needed more picks and more real midfielders.

This being said I still have hope that Barlow can find his 2010 form, Fyfe steps up his game and Hill becomes a man. I have to have hope! Just hope Ryon Loss realizes he is going to have to start making some nice culls and trades at the end of the year.

It was interesting to hear Brereton on SEN yesterday say that everybody in the media knows that the WA media is WC orientated and that they will pick a bad story on Freo over a bad story on WC. Anthony Hudson agreed with him.

I hate the mindset of some of our supporters in that we are 'picked' on and as has been said before start winning and this goes away. But pressure after nine weeks is laughable.

Interesting to read last night that some Saints supporters were 'happy' with their loss. Yeah, been there, done that.

Not really. Freo losses are usually the type where you are like WTF. Where the whole team just effectively stops trying for some reason and you have 10 goals kicked on you in 10 minutes.

Saints loss last night was nothing like it and Freo have had very few of those types of losses in its life time. People seem to get confused with a loss, treating them all the same... but if you were a saints supporter last night you were treated to a fantastic game, your side nearly won and your young players were stepping up.

The only thing that stopped it being perfect is the win, but aside from that it looked really positive. You won't see any negative articles written about the Saints after a loss like that because it was attractive football and they nearly won it.

Not really. They allowed Richmond to score way too easily. End to end footy looks great but not when the opponent is scoring in 30 seconds.

And you know why? Because Richmond often didn't press up all their forwards allowing them to have kicking options coming out of defense.

Rossy boy can learn a few things. Saints can learn a few things too, stop pressing so hard.

Agree with you re: Pitt and Suban. Suban should be better than he is but isn't. All bluster, no effort. In my view he got a free ride way too early and for too long in his career without earning it.

Pitt was a dud straight off the bat. Was perplexed when we got him and continue to be. He's not even justified under the 'best available' clause.
