Re: !!!

NO!!!!!!!!!

people have limited funds, they have only so much money.

they cannot spend more than they have, just because a stadium appears somewhere!!!

Look, it's quite simple. There are people out there (families, low income earners etc ..) for whom a night out at the Footy will be the extent to which their entertainment budget extends - this is agreed. But there are plenty who do have capacity to spend more, and would willingly do so if they had options available.

Imagine if Sat nights game was held at AO. How many people (who otherwise would have jumped in a bus or car and gone home) would have, in the post game euphoria, kicked on in the city (even if only to grab a bite to eat and talk about the game, or have a couple of bevvies enroute to their carpark in the city).

I'd suggest plenty.

^^^^
Well, money that is paid to someone from Govt. funds where only two people know about the transaction (until it is discovered) and is a mystery to the department from which it came, for a service kept hush hush to be rendered, and later, when the game is up and is exposed, to be then masqueraded as a 'bonus'...for 'work' yet to be even undertaken - I would call that payola, under the table money. Would you agree?

OK so the money didn't come from our Govt - my mistake, it is still money for nothing to get something done. I dont care. I really dont care. The whole shebang is underhanded.

Oh its somewhere is it. Heartening!

I have searched, I've found nothing. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about...

something of substance, something thats lacking in everything you have 'claimed' tonight.

Everything?

Perhaps the money under the table was a bit obtuse, however, related. But I heard Foley utter words on radio that I am merely conveying. I'm not making up those words. Foley said them... unless it was john blake doing an impersonation. The most memorable comment was that the AFC was not the major sporting interest involved, which is a remarkable statement considering its size compared to any other single sport club likely to use AO on a regular basis.

quite simply. Convenience. There is little need to use public transport in this city unless you have financial reasons to do so, even the use of a car isn't cost prohibitive.

Unless you live in one of the few areas with coverage of a train or tram line, public transport is nothing but an inconvenient and slow option.

I walked the 10 mins to my car on Sauturday night after the game and drove home in less time than the the 7.5km bus trip to the CBD from the stop at the end of my street, prob about 80m away.

Parking will be free when we go to AO for those smart enough to know how anyway. So why would you pay to sit on a bus.
How about the convenience of not being arrested when you want to get home after drinking?

You think Foley's involvement has been open and transparent? Like forgetting a minor detail about the blowout of the costings just before an election?
WTF yourself.
I can't believe that whole corrupt government thing was about Andrew Demitriou getting a bonus. The AFL can give Andy D bonuses, that isn't corruption.

Actually, I said a couple/few of posts ago that it didn't come from our Govt. - at least i hope it didn't. But bonuses are usually paid after the end result has been achieved, not usually before, and this was paid "even before the State Government-funded Stadium Management Authority has agreed on allowing football and cricket to reunite at Adelaide Oval"

yes it is quite simple. what confuses you about primary school level economics? :)

I think you've overlooked a key point here.

It is true that many (if not most) people have reasonably limited funds. However some purchases help the local economy more than others. For instance you could buy an iPad with your "fun money" and effectively send it to the US. Or you could choose to spend that exact same money on the footy and a few nights in town afterwards. This allows the money to stay (and of course be re-spent) here in SA, which is much better for the local economy than the "iPad money" that goes overseas. Footy becomes a much more attractive product by moving to the city (for most people anyway) and this would translate into more people buying local entertainment (footy, cafes, pubs) at the expense of foreign alternatives (iPads and other techno crap we don't need!).

I think footy at AO is also much more attractive to interstaters as well, which brings "new money" into the state.

Rubbish.

The only time economic activity is enhanced is when more jobs are created. the employment impact numbers in the Centre for economic studies report are almost laughable - as if a work experience person had done them. Average 30k attendance for Port games... yeah I stopped taking it seriously after that.

If the government were serious about bringing new money into this state, they would have bitten the bullet and built a brand new purpose built stadium that can effectively host more than just footy and cricket - you know, like international soccer and rugby, large scale stadium concerts etc. You know, things that are going to keep the $ generated by our mining expansion here, instead of the eastern states. If I was working at Olymic Dam, why would I FIFO out of Adelaide, when I could do the same out of an eastern states capital where there's much more to do?

This project is nothing but small town thinking. Aurelio was right.

Based on the article in the Sunday Mail and the below web site both camps are ramping up their campaign.

http://saveadelaideoval.com/

In the end whatever the vote I imagine at this stage the government will just compulsory acquire the land and go ahead.

Any idea what hoops the government need to go through to compulsory acquire the land?

I hate K-Fo with a passion, but he's a politician ... do you really expect anything different?

All politicians lie and 'forget things' for their own benefit. You show me an honest politican, and I'll show you a great actor.

Nice website. You've been busy :p

I like the bit where it says you can donate into Greg Howe's trust fund.

Ask anyone who runs a legal practice and they'll tell you that trust accounting is the very bane of their existence. The fact that the man's potentially messing his up beyond any reasonable extent shows a fanatical devotion to the cause!

Within a 2km or so radius of AO will be over 10,000 carparks, a raillink, a tram line & a bus interchange out the front of the stadium(hence KWR & WMD closing from the bridge onwards)

Remember everyday we have over 100,000 commute to the city. It seems to be able to cope.

True, and traffic will not be as condensed as people think, peak traffic before and after the game will not be as bad. Also traffic will be able to flow from the N, S, E and West unlike at AAMI. 1000's of fans will spill into to the city or will already be in the city before the game.

Can you imagine the atmosphere hours before and right through to after the game from North Terrace through to the precinct. The crowd and entrainment will be heard all the way to the city. Before the bounce siren blasting into the city while you finish off a Schnitzel and Beer at the Strath before the game (be sure to book :p)! It is going to be an incredible experience, an incredible atmosphere and a massive cultural shift for our city and footy in this state.

If you cannot see this then you must lack the vision that many do see. I feel no argument will help those see this and even when those are proven otherwise they will still find something to bicker about. It is going to happen. It's time to enjoy this experience. You'll miss the ride. It's going to special. Bring on 2014.

Quote from that website which adequately sums up my thoughts on the matter, the most pertinent of which I have put in bold:

At a cost of $535M Adelaide goes from having two stadia to one. Where is the logic in that? The two stadia concept is generally preferred by all the stakeholders. Irrespective of the competing views about AAMI Stadium, it is at least adequate for the time being and will remain adequate until a purpose-built second stadium for football can be afforded. There may well be a case for football to be played in the city, but at a dedicated football stadium, not at the most beautiful cricket ground in the world! The proposed Adelaide Oval redevelopment is a grossly expensive, unnecessary and retrograde compromise of the two stadia policy

The riverbank precinct proposal looks fantastic but could be achieved without decimating an historic icon with a half arsed AO upgrade. But the ball seems to be rolling now...

Err...so you're saying that spending money here rather than overseas doesn't help the local economy? Yeah OK!

This is not FACT though, it is just an opinion. I for one think the current look of AO is terrible and the proposal looks fantastic and unique.

Some points made by the savetheoval.com group are mixing opinions with facts. It may appear to be all factual but really it is a scare campaign. A glass half empty view or a dooms day story. This is ridiculous and is typical of such groups. If I was to believe this then I might as well believe the world is going to end in 2012 according to some opinions which are also based on facts.

The opening line says it all. Quote 'Thank you for visiting our website. I hope you are able to obtain here some more information on the debate over the proposed future development of Adelaide Oval. For those of you who are SACA members, we hope that this information will help you to decide how to vote at the forthcoming Special General Meeting in early May.'

No, this page tells you how to vote no only, it's tells you how to save only. It does not give any unbiased opinion. It just twists facts with doomsday stories. It's cleverly written and is targeted at those none the wiser. They should be ashamed of themselves. I hope those reading it are wise and educated otherwise it's going to get the 'NO' vote. Disgusting site!!!!
