If they really liked someone I wonder if they might retire and pay out Elijah.
It is possible, but all sorts of ramifications and blow back. Imagine the media and the bleeding hearts in the community criticising our duty of care to Lij. It makes little sense to try to keep him on the list as clearly his “condition” is a ticking time bomb. There was likely a stressor.

He was doing so very well, but clearly bringing him back on the list was a mistake. It was done in good faith by good meaning people, but it was a mistake.

1. It is a ruthless industry and we can’t afford to go forward with such risk.
2. He has had multiple “episodes” and clearly in the long term will be better off away from the professional game.

The optics around declaring inactive are another thing.

The first round of the draft will be held on Thursday, November 19 and the remaining rounds of the national draft will be staged on November 20.
There will then be a gap over the weekend before the rookie draft is staged on Monday, November 23 at 3pm AEDT.

The draft process will follow the trade and free agency periods in October, which have been confirmed to clubs on Wednesday.
The Continental Tyres Trade Period will start on Monday, October 5 and run until Wednesday, October 14, with a prime time finish again, while the free agency week will commence on Friday, October 2 and go through until Friday, October 5.

There is a bit of talk Pies have done a medical on Flynn Riley and are interested in him for the MSD. We should get ahead of them and grad him instead. A talented development ruckman in our VFL team.

E Hollands could/should be put on the inactive list it is not like we are delisting him just know it is not healthy to play him yet.

Come on Carlton get it done.

On AFL website it says Carlton unlikely to take a pick in the mid season draft.
Can't understand why we wouldn't.

We have 20 blokes out of contract. Why add another bloke to have to make a decision on at the end of the year if we don’t have to?

I guess the club either:
a) Really rates HOF and want/think it's best to leave the door ajar for him to make it back this year for a few games.
or
b) We don't really rate anyone available enough to take up a list spot and/or feel like they wouldn't get a game this year when we already have a heap of guys to get game time into before the end of the year. We also have something like half the list out of contract at the end of the year so giving a guy a 6 month contract who probably won't play this year anyway doesn't seem all that worthwhile. And if it's an 18 month contract then that makes delistings harder.

Personally I can see both sides of the argument. The MSD does feel like a free hit at gaining a decent player. But it also would shut down HOF's season and it can't be underestimated how much mental toll that takes on a player. Sometimes the wise choice is the one that places player welfare the highest and this can have ripple effects through the group if they feel supported and treated well. Will be interesting to see what we do.

On the other hand, we're in line for third pick for a change.

Unless we recognise a Mannagh, Newcombe or D'Ambrosio type, then your right.

....then again, I don't think we'll have any problems delisting 8-10 uncontracted players end of year.

Isn't it also a 'free hit' at finding a player? What if they come in to the side and impact? I don't think there is any need to get cute with needs either.

I may be off base but I keep going back to Herbert as an example. Seems like a classic state league player with form who could step up to AFL and play a role

Because it allows you to capture some of the mature age draft pool before the draft.

Will likely come down to where Hollands and O'Farrell are at.

Lack of bodies in the recruitment department also I would have thought.

Only one name missing in terms of scouting, with Davies reporting to Wright to bridge the gap in terms of the two departed roles.

Probably second pick if Bomber beat Tigers. Like Flynn Riley before Pies get him. Free hit imo.
