AFL drafts 2005-2014 revisited

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I've enjoyed reading some of these posts and certainly its a huge undertaking to look at so many years of the draft so good on you for trying. That said there is no way on earth that Taylor Durea would go before Carlisle in any draft or selection by any team. Durea is a fringe player in a top team. Carlisle is a very talented 200cm KP that can play forward or back who will probably go onto to register a number of AA's in his career.
First off, thanks for focusing on more than my OP. I'll start off by saying that all of these are my personal opinion and I in no way think myself an expert, that being said I believe that A talented Back pocket that can rotate through the midfield and hold his own is a better asset than a Key position player that has had a shit attitude and social media problem. If it was all completely on field no doubt Carlisle

Not sure anyone can justify this even with the other half of the statement.

2010

Gold Coast Pick 1
Original: Patrick Ryder Revisited: Luke Parker (40)

No doubt that Parker is the standout of this draft, coming second in the Brownlow this year and earning an All-Australian selection it's hard to deny that he's a superstar player and coming into his prime is scary to think that he isn't even Sydney's number 1 midfielder yet.

Gold Coast Pick 2
Original: Harley Bennell Original: Thomas Lynch (11)

As he gets older it becomes more and more obvious that Lynch was a steal at Pick 11. He was rewarded for his fantastic form with an All-Australian Jacket and the best of his oppurtunity from a lack luster midfield for Gold Coast this year. Scary to think of what he could do in another side

Gold Coast Pick 3
Original: Sam Day Revisited: Andrew Gaff (4)

Gaff has been fantastic and consistent for West Coast as an outside midfielder and one of if not the best outside runner in the competition. Has earned an All-Australian nomination this year and selection last.

West Coast Pick 4
Original: Andrew Gaff Revisited: Tom Libratore (41)

He's one of the oddest characters in footy but there is no denying the talent and star power that Liba has. Along with Wallis (who was also picked up in the draft) he's part of Bulldogs ever growing midfield

Brisbane Lions Pick 5
Original: Jared Polec Revisited: Dyson Heppell (8)

No denying that Heppell is a good player and looked to be bursting out of Watson's shadow prior to the ban for 2016. A massive amount of personal awards and most likely plenty to come Heppell looks on track to be the oldest of Essendons Heppell/Merrett/Parish midfield trio.

Richmond Pick 6
Original: Reece Conca revisited: Dion Prestia (6)

This pick was betwen Prestia and Wallis, both of which I believe are equal, so the reason I have prestia going to Richmond is so they could just save time and two draft picks

Gold Coast Pick 7
Original: Josh Caddy Revsited: Mitch Wallis (22)

Wallis is a jet. Much like Liba he was taken later than he should have thanks to Father-Son in the old days, in hindsight he is defintley worth a first round selection. Was on track to a best and fairest for Bulldogs before his horrific leg break.

Essendon Pick 8
Original: Dyson Heppell Revisited: Harley Bennell (2)

No denying the Bennell is an exceptional player, yet to really see his full potential it's scary to think of Fremantle in the future with a fully fit Fyfe, Bennell and Neale midfield it woudl match it with the best in the comp

Gold Coast Pick 9
Original: Dion Prestia Revisited: David Swallow (1)

It's unfortunate that many people forget how good David Swallow was before his injury troubles winning the Gold Coast Best and Fairest in 2014 when Gary Ablett played majority of the year, he was shaping up as Gold Coast Captain, hope he gets back on track and back to his best

Gold Coast Pick 10
Original: Daniel Gorringe Revisited: Jack Darling (26)

Gold Coast Pick 11
Original: Tom Lynch Revisited: Issac Smith (19)

Melbourne Pick 12
Original: Lucas Cook Revisited: Alex Fasolo (45)

Gold Coast Pick 13
Original: Seb Tape revisited: Tom Macdonald (53)

Adelaide Pick 14
Original: Brodie Smith Revisited: Jeremy Howe (33)

Geelong Pick 15
Original: Billie Smedts Revisited: Brodie Smith (14)

Port Adelaide Pick 16
Original: Ben Jacobs Revisited: Cam Guthrie (23)
Really don't think Parker is the standout here. I'd take Tom Lynch over just about everyone in the AFL, probably the equal most valuable player in the entire league along with Dangerfield. 66 goals from a 24 year old Key forward in a struggling team with little to no delivery from the midfield, what more can you ask for?

Fair enough, if anything they're both equal IMO, Pakr er more so a "standout" because of his accomplishments already but no doubt both are stars

So we choose Nathan Jones over a guy who won the AFLCA award for best player in the comp? I don't think so. Nathan Jones has better PR but he's half the player Marc has been.

Oh and Scott Pendlebury > Kennedy by a country mile.
Conutry mile?? id take kennedy over pendles! gun big forwards dont grow on trees. especially ones as good as kennedy, chuck kennedy in collingwoods fwd line and get rid of pendles and reckon t
You would play finals!

Yeah but Pendleburys dont grow on trees either...

2012

GWS Pick 1
Original: Lachlan Whitfield Revisited: Ollie Wines (7)

Ollie is a great player and has every club in the league after him no doubt. A young superstar that is on his way to a brownlow. I'm fuming that he slipped past us in 2012 and know that he'll be a massive headache for clubs in future.

GWS Pick 2
Orignal: Jonathan O'Rourke Revisited: Jack Viney (26)

Another contested bull taken in this draft that has proven useful for Melbourne and is going to be a big part of their midfield in future and is already becoming a pain in the ass for opposition sides

GWS Pick 3
Original: Lachlan Plowman Revisited: Brodie Grundy (18)

Grundy was pushing for AA selection this year and probably won Collingwood most of their games this year, if I was a betting man I'd be betting that an SA team will be throwing the kithen sink at this blokein a couple of years.

Melbourne Pick 4
Original: Jimmy Toumpas Revisited: Jake Stringer (5)

Stringer is an extremely energetic and amazing player. Had a bit of trouble towards the end of this year and seemed a bit out of it during the finals, hope he finds his form again

Western Bulldogs Pick 5
Original: Jake Stringer Revisited: Jackson Macrae (6)

The Bulldogs were lucky enough to get two top 10 picks in 2012 and both are worthy of those picks. Macrae has been fantastic for the bulldogs, he is a key part of their team

Western Bulldogs Pick 6
Original: Jackson Macrae Revisited: Tim Membrey (46)

Membrey, despite only playing 29 games, has kicked 53 goals and lead St.Kilda's goal kicking this year, shows some great promise and is a certain star

Port Adelaide Pick 7
Original: Ollie Wines Revisited: Lachie Hunter (49)

Lachie has been a star especially this year, really came out of his shell and became a force to be reckoned with

Brisbane Lions Pick 8
Original: Sam Mayes Revisited: Joe Daniher (10)

Richmond Pick 9
Original: Nick Vlastuin Revisited: Lachie Whitfield (1)

Essendon Pick 10
Original: Joe Daniher Revisited: Nick Vlastuin (10)

Carlton Pick 11
Original: Troy menzel revisited: Aidan Corr (14)

GWS Pick 12
Original: Kristian Jacksh Revisited: Nathan Hrovat (21)

Gold Coast Pick 13
Original: Jesse Lonergan revisited: Ben Kennedy (19)

GWS Pick 14
Original: Aidan Corr revisited: Marco Paparone (23)

North Melbourne Pick 15
Original: Taylor Garner revisited: Sam Mayes (8)

Geelong Pick 16
Original: Jackson Thurlow Revisited: Dean Towers (22)

Fremantle Pick 17
Original: Josh Simpson revisited: Jesse Lonergan (13)

Collingwood Pick 18
Original: Brodie Grundy revisited: Tim Broomhead (20)
Quick! Change this before the salty Essendon supporters arrive!!! Lol anyways,
Take no offense to this but Daniher should be at 1 instead of 10. You seemed to be severely underrating KPFs. Grundy, Daniher, Wines is the clear top 3 from this draft. Viney is a good player, but he isn't even a top 25 player by position yet. Whereas Daniher and Grundy are both top 5 in terms of value in their respective positions.

Now that I'm finished I've decided to accept complaints, please use this template

Dear Scullwag,
Nice effort, it must have taken a lot of time, but in all honesty how in the world could you think [playername] is more deserving of Pick [picknumber] than [playername] in the [year] draft. You must be on some strong drugs because that's F***ing delusional. I do however agree with [plyername] above [playername].
Yours sincerely,
[yourname]

First of all, this a top notch effort, well done. You are always going to get criticism though, so I'll use your template.

Dear Scullwag,
Nice effort, it must have taken a lot of time, but in all honesty how in the world could you think Adam Tomlinson is more deserving of Pick 9 than Lachie Neale in the 2011 draft. You must be on some strong drugs because that's F***ing delusional. I do however agree with Tom Mitchell above Chad Wingard.
Yours sincerely,

100% completely forgot about Neale, was gonna put him like top 8 as well, defs deserves it more than tomilson

Probably a question mark in each year
2005 - Douglas maybe higher?
2006 - Boak and Riewoldt ahead of Josh Kennedy - Yeah right!
2007 - Craig Bird - C'mon dude!!
2008 - Shuey way too low, well above his teammate Redden who can't get a game
2009 - Martin a clear number 2 - superstar over a number of years
2010 - Not bad although I'd have Heppell over Gaff any day of the week
2011 - Kersten has no place on that list, at least not yet.
2012 - Membrey too high after 1 good year only. Pretty ordinary draft though
2013 - Again, not bad, but not sure Langdon or Hartung deserve to be any where near that list.
2014 - Petracca way too low and should have Connor Blakely in there, done more than Steele, Maynard and Lonie

Quick! Change this before the salty Essendon supporters arrive!!! Lol anyways,

Wines and Grundy in a clear top 3? Stringer, Macrae and Viney would have a fair argument. All 3 have shown more than Grundy and i think all 3 project better than Wines.

2006

Carlton Pick 1
Original: Bryce Gibbs Revisited: Joel Selwood (7)

Pretty Obvious pick, been a ridiculous player and has been one of the games premier midfielders for a while now with numerous All-Australians and countless other awards the Cats skipper has been an outstanding player throughout his career

Essendon Pick 2
Original: Scott Gumbleton Revisited: Travis Boak (5)

The power skipper is one of the best port players currently and has been with Port Adelaide through thick and thin.

North Melbourne Pick 3
Original: Lachie Hansen Revisited: Jack Riewoldt (13)

Jack has been a great for the tigers shouldering majority of the forward line responsibility earning 2 coleman medals and 7 consecutive Richmond leading goal kickers since 2010.

Brisbane Lions Pick 4
Original: Matthew Leunberger Revisited: Todd Goldstein (37)

Still a ruckman and a massive upgrade (eventually) it took goldstein a while to get a handle of things and he hasn't looked a foot out of place since

Port Adelaide Pick 5
Original: Travis Boak Revisited: Josh P. Kennedy (40)

Lets travel to an alternate universe where there are no father sons, Josh Kennedy is ridiculously talented and despite taking his time to develop, he's turned into one of the best modern day midfielders, 3x All-Australians, 3x Sydney best and fairests and the first ever Gary Ayres medal for the best player in the finals. hard to believe that hawthorn gave him up for peanuts

Hawthron Pick 6
Original: Mitchell Thorp Revisited: Tom Hawkins (41)

Ended up at Geelong through father son has been the best Key forward at Geelong for a long time and would have been servicable with Franklin and Roughead

Geelong Pick 7
Original: Joel Selwood Revisited: Robbie Gray (55)

Hindsight is 20/20 especially with Robbie Gray, one of the best midfielders in the game winning the coaches award in 2014. Only hit stride in 2012

Collingwood Pick 8
Original: Ben Reid Revisited: Justin Westhoff (71)

like for like with this one as both are great utilities. Hard to say westhoff is better but he's run with injury hasnt been as hard

St Kilda Pick 9
Original: David Armitage Revisited: Bryce Gibbs (1)

Another like for like with this, the original number 1 sliding all the way to 9 but he is starting to climb especially with his form this year

Collingwood Pick 10
Original: Nathan Brown Revisited: James Frawley (12)

Like for like but with Frawley making all australian in 2010 and winning a premiership with the hawks in 2015 you'd take him over the injury ridden Nathan Brown

Western Bulldogs Pick 11
Original: Andrejs Everitt Revisited: Lindsay Thomas (53)

Melbourne Pick 12
Original: James Frawley Revisited: Ben Reid (8)

Richmond Pick 13
Original: Jack Riewoldt Revisited: Kurt Tippett (32)

Adelaide Pick 14
Original: James Sellar Revisited: David Armitage (9)

Sydney Pick 15
Original: Daniel O'Keefe Revisited: Bachar Houli (42)

West Coast Pick 16
Original: Mitch Brown Revisited: Eric Mckenzie (29)

As a port fan its good to see our players rated so high, but personally i think too high lol. Westhoff shouldn't be rated there and even Boak is rated to highly or at least should be even with Goldy and Jack.

2013

Hardest draft to do by far, all of the top 5 deserving of number 1

GWS Pick 1
Original: Tom Boyd Revisited: Marcus Bontempelli (4)

Bont is a ******* brilliant player, everyone loves him, pretty much a replica of Pendles, it's amazing to think he made it pick 4 but hindsight is 20/20. Isn't a standout per say but he is currently above everyone else

GWS Pick 2
Original: Josh Kelly Revisited: Patrick Cripps (13)

Crippa was number one prior to this year with his second to none clearance work and work rate he's the perfect tall midifelder. This is by far the strongest draft I've had to do and it's proven by Cripps coming in second

St.Kilda Pick 3
Original: Jack Billings Revisited: Zach Merrett (26)

Merrett proved his worth this year, stood up when Essendon needed someone too (cough cough David Zaharakis) really fantastic, great to see him develop

Western Bulldogs Pick 4
Original: Marcus Bontempelli Revisited: Josh Kelly (2)

Was deserving of pick 2 and any other draft he would have been there in revision but this is a very strong draft. He's been a great outside midfielder for us and one of the best in the competition.

Gold Coast Pick 5
Original: Kade Kolodjashnij revisited: Kade Kolodjashnij (5)

He's a solid selection at pick 5, has anyone else noticed that Pick 5's generally turn out to be guns? Seriously he is spot on for pick 5. Probably the best Gold Coast defender pre injury.

Collingwood Pick 6
Original: Matthew Scharenberg Revisited: Cameron Mcarthy (14)

Despite his woes last year he's been shipped off the Freo and hopefully he'll find his feet again

Brisbane Lions Pick 7
Original: James Aish Revisited: Tom Boyd (1)

Really showed his worth during the finals series. Big unit who is now developing nicely

North Melbourne Pick 8
Original: Luke Mcdonald Revisted: Daniel McStay (25)

Both talented defenders, McStay is known for swinging forward as well. Both solid

Melbourne Pick 9
Original: Christian Salem Revisited: Matt Crouch (23)

Collingwood Pick 10
Original: Nathan Freeman Revisited: Lewis Taylor (28)

West Coast Pick 11
Original: Dom Sheed Revisited: Tom Langdon (65)

Richmond Pick 12
Original: Ben Lennon Revisited: Allir Allir (44)

Carlton Pick 13
Original: Patrick Cripps Revisited: Rory Lobb (29)

GWS Pick 14
Original: Cam McCarthy Revisited: Billy Hartung (24)

Sydney Pick 15
Original: Zak Jones revisited: Ben Brown (47)

Geelong Pick 16
Original: Darcy Lang Revisited: Darcy Gardiner (22)

Fremantle Pick 17
Original: Micahel Apeness Revisited: Tom Barrass (43)

St.Kilda Pick 18
Original: Luke Dunstan Revisited: Luke Dunstan (18)
Nice effort mate!

But surely Ben Brown is being criminally under rated. I reckon he should be fight out number 3 with Lobb.
Not sure about McCarthy.

As a giants fan do you rate McCarthy as a better long term prospect the Lobb? Or has McCarthy's output been greater so far?

2014

St.Kilda Pick 1
Original: Patrick McCartin Revisited: Darcy Moore (9)

Say what you will but it's to deny the son of Collingwood Legend Peter Moore is an outstanding player. Having played only 26 games and still managing 33 goals is fantatstic, not to mention that for majority of this year he was considered Collingwood's best Key forward it's a massive load to shoulder for a young player

Melbourne Pick 2
Original: Christian Petracca Revisited: Jake Lever (14)

You have to be something special to slot in to an already outstanding backline and still perform past expectations. As far as young KPD's go I rate Lever as one of the best. He's been a fantastic player for the crows and fits in like a 200 game player.

Melbourne Pick 3
Original: Angus Brayshaw Revisited: Issac Heeney (18)

Now I know that he was reserved for sydney but in a different world he would have been free pickings, and he would have been snatched up right away. He's already a superstar for the Swans and will be a menace in the midfield for years to come,

GWS Pick 4
Original: Jarrod Pickett Revisited: Jordan De Goey (5)

Jordan is an absolute bull. Great contested ball getter and also fits well on the forward flank he was drafted AFL ready as was obvious with his Round 1 debut the next year.

Collingwood Pick 5
Original: Jordan De Goey Revisited: Angus Brayshaw (3)

He was fantastic to step up in his first year when petracca was the more hyped draftee. hopefully he gets a better crack next year with out his concussion problems he had this year

GWS Pick 6
Original: Caleb Marchbank Revisited: Touk Miller (29)

He's been a solid partner to Aaron Hall when GCS have been up and about but he's also been solid through the midfield when they get their injuries through there, might be a bit of disagreement with this one but I truely believe he's been outstanding

GWS Pick 7
Original: Paul Ahern Revisited: Patrick McCartin (1)

Had some injuries and concussion problems but he's still put up some outstanding performances from his 17 games

GCS Pick 8
Original: Peter Wright Revisited: Peter Wright (8)

Spot on here, been a great KPF/Ruck for them, has the potential and signs to be better than Ryder and others in that position

Collingwood Pick 9
Original: Darcy Moore Revisited: Harris Andrews (61)

Geelong Pick 10
Original: Nakia Cockatoo Revisited: Caleb Daniel (46)

WCE Pick 11
Original: Liam Duggan Revisited: Brayden Maynard (30)

Richmond Pick 12
Original: Corey Ellis Revisited: Liam Duggan (11)

Fremantle Pick 13
Original: Lachie Weller Revisited: Lachie Weller (13)

Adelaide Pick 14
Original: Jake Lever Revisited: Jack Steele (24)

Gold Coast Pick 15
Original: Jarrod Garlett Revisited: Jack Lonie (41)

North Melbourne Pick 16
Original: Sam Durdin Revisited: Mitch McGovern (43)

Essendon Pick 17
Original: Kyle Langford Revisited: Oscar Macdonald (53)

Sydney Pick 18
Original: Issac Heeney Revisited: Christian Petracca (2)

And that concludes the Drafts Revisited. Thank you everyone for the responses and feedback.
No arguments on the top 3.
From a dogs perspective I think Toby Mclean should be in there. I'd have him in the top 10. Premiership second year of football, can't ask for much more, Would have him well ahead of Macdonald, Duggan, Maynard, Miller, Steele and Lonie. I reckon De goey and Brayshaw are too high as well (Brayshaws problem mainly injured).

2007

Western Bulldogs Pick 5
Original: Jarrad Grant Revisited: Jack Steven (42)

Steven has ended up being the best st kilda player and pushed all-australian this year, fantastic asset for st.kilda.

Brisbane Lions Pick 8
Original: Lachlan Henderson Revisited: Lachlan Henderson (8)

Brisbane got this one right despite losing him a few years later. He's been strong at all clubs he been at and a servicable swingman.

St Kilda Pick 9
Original: Ben McEvoy Revisited: Callan Ward (19)

Ward has been great throughout his career. He switched to GWS in 2012 and was made co captain with Phil Davis

Ward to 5
Steven to 8
Henderson to outerspace

And youve got it bang on

Nice effort mate!

But surely Ben Brown is being criminally under rated. I reckon he should be fight out number 3 with Lobb.
Not sure about McCarthy.

As a giants fan do you rate McCarthy as a better long term prospect the Lobb? Or has McCarthy's output been greater so far?
Honestly Lobb will be a ruck when he's bigger. Both are great but its hard to say lobbs better because if McCarthy stayed with us Lobb wouldn't have played

No arguments on the top 3.

Premierships are won as a team, same arguement can be had for Will Langford but who thinks about that guy anymore?

Premierships are won as a team, same arguement can be had for Will Langford but who thinks about that guy anymore?
Yeah but if we were talking about Will Langford the year after winning the flag I'd of had him a top pick and I dont reckon he would've played as many games as Mclean by his second year of football. And I'm not really saying just on the basis of winning a premiership he should be there as I'd be saying Cordy as well (even tho thats what i wrote haha)
I just reckon Mclean is a jet,
Also being best 22 in premiership side when players like Duggan and Steele could not crack the best 22 of there respective teams by the pointy end of the year has to show for something (I know Steele was injured & probs wouldve played in the prelim at the expense of Johnson being reported).
Also I'm pretty sure Lonie was getting dropped frequently last year?
Even Touk Miller I couldn't see him getting a game for any of the top 4 sides this year, maybe Geelong. Where Mclean did and played well
All a matter of opinion mate, 99% i agree with, love the effort put in
