Enjoying setting up ai v ai games instead of playing it on my own.

Hawks v Eagles in WA, Eagles were the stronger team (could score at will after Naitanui tapped it long). Hawthorn was down by quite a bit after half time, they clawed it back to 19 points at the end of the third quarter. Scored the first goal to make it 12, Eagles kicked away again including a Priddis goal from the center square (torp on the run) I was amazed as it started going right in the point area, but the wind curved it back to help it become a goal.

The amusing thing was Big Boy did the same thing the following goal. Hawthorn got it down to 6 points before the Eagles kicked the sealer.

Hawks v Crows at the MCG. Adelaide were strong but Hawthorn kept counter punching. Adelaide had a 13 point lead but Hawthorn scored a goal at the death to win by 1. Loving being able to record them and watch them back :).

Something I've noticed the AI loves to try to find a better angle to score from (and at the same time make it harder on themselves when trying to kick closer to the goal square, making it easy for the opposition AI to pick off the pass. Any human player would go for the shot at goal, while the AI rarely goes for the long bomb set shot. Some of the other decisions are a bit weird, like they'll be dead in front from 50.......... they'll pass it off to someone else at a similar distance, but at a worse angle.. Or if they're on an angle, they'll center the ball... 25-30 meters away, (I'd aim for the goal square personally!).

I'm still useless at predicting where players will end up (when doing be a pro mode and just controlling myself!), when you get the match/season objectives that require x tackles... it makes it hard to actually complete them. I find I have to set up the opportunities myself (as in, get the ball, hand pass it near an opposition player, let them get the ball, then tackle them!). Averaging 20 possessions and 2 goals a game thus far, now with St Kilda.

In contrast I setup Hawthorn v GCS, and GCS were killing them by 6 goals, didn't get to see the end.....

From the 'maybe it's just me' files, I think the AI GC have been hard to beat in AFL games for some time. Definitely Live 2 and Evo, maybe Live 1 as well (I think Live 1 got GC in the patch?!?).

Nothing really to back this up, I just always lose to them.

Went onto steam just now to have a play. Rather than the name being white it's grey. ****ing steam wants me to install the game again. I still have all the game files on my PC, why the **** is it doing this!?

Right click and verify the file integrity (or whatever the option is called in Steam).

It might only be a partial installation (happens sometimes where it looks like the full game will be downloaded but its just an update being funny).

Would love a Nintendo Switch version next would buy it for portable afl on the go!

Turn the speed of the kick meter up. Compensate by adding a bit of extra distance to kicks, and throw in a touch of wind.

Edit: forgot to add: Spoiling: 100. Both teams. That plus a higher setting on fumbles makes it much more exciting!

Thanks man, excellent suggestions. Especially higher fumbling and spoiling, a lot more realistic and a bit of a head scratcher why WW didn't crank these earlier.

Slow is also much better, although probably what we need is a setting between slow and normal. That would be perfect. The frantic play in front of goal actually becomes enjoyable (well, one game in). You feel a lot more in control and it's a lot more satisfying. You start to feel like the mistakes are your own.

Question - can anyone nominate for a lead on PC? I cannot make the circle appear around a player. Have tried all buttons.

Turn on auto aim or whatever it's called, hold left bumper, and I think use right stick to change target

Just a further trial, I'm now turning down the stats of ruckman co p wide in regards to running and acceleration. Also lowering known players who stuffed for distance, to offset the increase in kick power to around 56 from memory.

It feels much more realistic when Jeffy Gartlett gets a mark 48m out- you now know like real life he doesn't have the legs for it, and are forced to look for a target or get creative :)

Has anyone unlocked the "Single Minded - Complete all of your match objectives during a match" achievement on steam? I reckon it's glitched for me.

Currently got 33/50 achievements. Also for those that have steam add me, username is RossFC.

Wow that's what it does. Thanks! I thought the setting was intended for new players under general play. RTFM for me I guess.

Yeah me too- I used it initially, then turned it off, but realised it's a handy option to have! To hit FF's on leads, I use the lock on and almost tap kick button to put it well in front.

But at the same time, I consistently use the non lock-on kick, which allows me to kick into space, which is great for breaking 1v1s as I can kick and have a guy run on to the ball.

Also really making use of playing on from a kickout to comoftably clear the 50 :) (risky to pump it too far, or the kick goes red and half the time OOTF)..

Just wish the CPU teams would employ zone or press defensive tactics in kickouts in season, as I much prefer the realism of "leads" over the other one which makes them all run to one side (shit teams do this). But I don't have the short option in the pocket since they have a CPU player on their toes :(

Where's patch 2B for the consoles?! Its been nearly 2 months since patch A, cut us some slack WW!!

Playing devil's advocate, WW probably want the next patch to be the last one and the final testing will be critical, especially considering there's new features and people are currently climbing the walls over the current bugs.

At a guess I would say late August, I wouldn't be surprised.

Still addicted to watching the AI go at it, moved on from Hawthorn v Sydney/Geelong/WCE matches and have branched out to Brisbane/Fremantle/Melbourne as opponents for the Hawks. I do plan on simulating general match ups like WCE v Freo, Adelaide v Port Adelaide etc.

The Brisbane game was a tight contest until half time, then Hawthorn destroyed them.

The Fremantle game was art imitating life. Low scoring and Fremantle in front until the end of the third quarter where scores were level (57). Hawthorn would go on a 5 goal scoring blitz in the final quarter, while Fremantle kicked the final 2 goals to reduce the margin just slightly.

The Melbourne game was great, Melbourne jumped out of the blocks kicking 5 goals to 2. Hawthorn hit back in the second kicking 5 goals to Melbourne's 3. Hawthorn was down a goal at half time, kicked 3 more goals to Melbourne's 2 goals at three quarter time, Hawthorn in front by 2 points (having kicked 2 behinds the same quarter). Melbourne would kick 2 goals 1 point to Hawthorn's 2 goals 2 points, Hawthorn won 77 - 74. Melbourne were threatening to steal it away in the last minute......... if not for bad AI decision making they would have...... They kicked the ball to their 50, then went sideways instead of forward, when they tried to go forward again a Hawthorn defender punched the ball away.

Haha sounds cool - except for the dumb melbourn logic, but then again..

What I'm enjoying is switching off the ruckman when playing in season, which usually results in me being in control of one of the rovers/mids. Best part is they will auto position until you make a directional control input.

When Gawn is on fire, just as the umpire goes to bounce, or throw in anywhere, I tap the change player bumper button, and then setup as a mid. Sometimes I'll stay on my man, other times I bolt for a clear space- occasionally Gawny puts it down my throat.

Had an epic one, playing tigers, just holding the lead with few mins to go, throw in 25m out from my goal, Gawn tapped it straight to me as Viney, on the bolt mid stride and straight into the goals with just 1v1 on the line to kick over. Was SOOO SATISFYING!

Set Shot stats need to be tightened up a lot. You should have to be 90+ before being a regular goal kicker.

Lesser stats should mean greater affect by the wind, the bar sometimes will charge quicker depending on your stamina, your kicks might pull to one side randomly.

There's never many seriously good set shots in the AFL these days and that should be reflected. Don't make it impossible, just make it something that you have to make a priority over other stuff if you want it to be reliable from anywhere.

Couldn't agree more. Goal kicking - and this applies to all past games - badly needs a mechanism where great goal kickers have 'easy' goals and everyone else has a tougher time of it. I think one release tried to tackle this, there was a little window with a ball bouncing left to right and it was slower for good kicks, and it was faster and the goals were closer together for bad kicks &/or if the player was further out. Not the best system in the world but at least it tried to input a few additional variables and still leave it remotely possible that bad kicks could score an improbable goal.

If we are in a situation where WW are going to look at Evo 2, it would be great if they could rework this part of the game. No one has come close to nailing it yet and it could be really fun, and a handy reward for finding your FF or best kick on a lead. You'd probably also need to add 'loose man in defence' if going down this path to ramp up the stakes.

Up to 36/50 achievements now. I am part of the 0.1% of people on steam that have these 3 achievements.

Now starting to rage at the screen during AI v AI matches, witnessed the AI kick to the forward pocket, then kick the ball back to the half forward flank, only for that player to kick it back to the same forward pocket (who then gets out marked at the contest lol). Kept yelling KICK IT Sam Newman style (when he used to be on MMM and yelling at Josh Fraser when Collingwood were playing!).

Also saw the AI get the ball to the forward pocket, only to kick back............. all the way to the wing ? WTF haha.

Very good :D

I've got most of them on the Xbox, I'll gradually get them on Steam too... not as motivated this time around though. 24 hours of game time... pretty much 2 hours a day since release, still addicted... just playing it on pc instead of xbox. Playing it on the 360 controller was odd at first, I gradually got used to it.... but I thought I'd try out the Xbox One controller (via the usb cable instead of wireless) after playing around with the drivers I got it going and it's more comfortable for me.

WHat's this about adjusting sliders? (kicking power, spoiling etc)

PC version comes with those options XBO/PS4 will get them at some stage when they release the next patch.

Now 7 or so games into my season, so probably 20 games in total played and I'm getting over it. Yes, the game can have some fun, tense moments at times, but it feels very monotonous.

Very frequently the game is just a chain of handballs and tackles just hoping to have one extra player. You may have 4 defenders but if the opponent has 5 forward then ultimately they'll be the last man standing.

And if you don't run down the ground with a chain of handballs then you may as well just bomb the ball as long as possible, because no matter where you kick it, it will be to a contest.

For a variety of reasons, the single player experience just isn't up to long term replayability like FIFA or so, but there's lot of fun in multiplayer, and the robust create a player adds a fair bit.
