Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

Everyone who considers themselves a Cat must read John Harms' piece on the Grand Final.

Amazing.

My favourite paragraph:

http://footyalmanac.com.au/?p=29960
Where’s Tom Hawkins? Standing there ecstatic and perplexed. A young man who looked bamboozled by all these zone thingies in that dastardly Round 1 game against St Kilda; who wondered why coaches would have him play in the ruck; a man who would rather stand in the ten yard square in pub and bowser towns in the Riverina, and kick 160 goals, climbing on the shoulders of the sheep-crutcher from Kickatinalong. A local Icarus, who features in doggerel and on Aunt Ruby’s crocheted tea caddies. But who now has won Geelong a premiership.

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

Don't know if anybody noticed, but we can now say redemption for 2008 is officially complete: Every player that played that day has now gone on to win a premiership since. Lonners, Joshie and Stokesy were the last three that played that day but weren't part of the 2009 team. On Saturday, they got their redemption....

Now if only we could beat the hawks in the 2012 grand final....

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

In my eyes, this was the most satisfying Grand Final by a long, long way. Everything was perfect.

Everyone writing us off to begin the year, and continuing to write us off all the way through the season, despite grinding our way to a great undefeated run.

The Melbourne smashing. What a game of football, I'll remember that for a while.

Beating Collingwood, St Kilda, Carlton and Hawthorn in nail-biting finishes. If there is anything more satisfying than beating a team you hate, beating them by under a goal would have to be it.

The number of debuts throughout the season, and the awesomness of Duncan and Menzel in their second seasons.

The thrashing of Collingwood.

Beating Hawthorn for the first time in a final in a long, long time. Such an awesome feeling which only got better by beating the Coast in a final and then of course Collingwood in the grandy. So many "redemptions" in just one finals series.

Hawkins and Varcoe playing blinders in the GF after every cat and his dog tried to write them off dring the season. Great stuff from them.

Even the Hawkin's poster from 09 was some what cancelled out by the Wellingham poster this year.

And then of course, the icing on the cake. 3 flags in 5 years.

What a great year. I just love this club.

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

The beauty about this premiership is that we avenged past finals losses against Hawthorn and West Coast and our most recent finals conquerers Collingwood. Not only did we win but we did it in emphatic style, smashing the Hawks and Pies 3 times each and only narrowly lost to the Eagles away in the middle of a hard training bloc. Many myths were also busted in the big dance: Selwood is a Miss September, Hawkins is a deer in the headlight, Mackie is soft, Lonergan is a hack etc etc. A loss would have done enormous injustice to this golden era in that Collingwood would have equalled our two flags. It's easily my favourite of the 3 premierships.

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

The references to Soweto and Mandela are absurd.

From reading his writing John Harms seems to live exclusively in some heroic (in his head) version of middle class inner city suburbia, so what he knows of these places I have no idea.

Otherwise it was an nice piece, though he has written this article a hundred times before.

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

That SJ spray was gold. I though it looked like a "f you daisy"

Wasn't daisy just previously standing the area of te mark to stop Stevie coming around too much? Maybe he was giving it to stevie then and copped a bit back after the goal????

I can lip read the word c*** and this is 100% what he said.

I just wanna know who it was to, have watched the replay of it a few times and there is no evidence whatsoever. Love the way he says it so dominantly.

You have a point, and SJ's 'amazing' in reference is a little ott. But this is just Harm's way of writing. I found the Soweto/Mandela reference abusrdly hilarious, and correct. Footy in Melbourne is a dreamland heroic version of middle-class suburbia that takes in everyone from everywhere. It's only at the footy will the masses think a goal in a grannie as jubilant as the freeing of a political prisoner. Pure emotion and release, Melbourne's way.

May Harms have reason to keep writing this article a few hundreds time more!

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

Good self-indulgent piece. There are some great literary Cat fans out there - Gideon Haigh and G Whateley of course.

Like so many of us, 80s Ablett lads. Grew up with shooting stars in our eyes and got burnt. Had to learn that it was Scarlo that we needed, that would get it all done. :D

If there is one, and there isn't of course that collective effort and will is what it's all about, but if there was. He's the one who made our club great.

Nope, it was "F*** You Taz" and aimed at Tarrant who was in his ear about the knee stopping SJ from getting away from him all afternoon.

Can't agree - just love the imagery this guy conjures up and the way he captures various pieces of club culture and rituals. "Strong mark" - just love it , my 14 yr old son and I said those exact words and then could barely look at the set shot !
Just love what guys like Harms and Whateley bring to the table.

Just watched it again a few times and I think your right, it does seem to come out with a z on the end....unless he says f*** you c***tz. Nah only joking but how did you know that unless you are a lip reader or know SJ (or taz) personally.

I prefer the c*** version anyway. Sounds more appropriate given the circumstances. I know when they were showing Eddie or Mick when we had it won I was saying that to the TV.

As for a good Geelong article, I enjoyed the following one and just realised John Harms was with him:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-diverging-paths-to-joy-and-despair-20111001-1l32u.html

The panic you get when the result is still unknown and the resultant calm when you watch the replay and the game then makes sense, it is so much like a huge gamble if they lose, sums it up for me.

Also the end bit had a bit of resonance and made the result even more special for me, maybe its one of those omens of why they won.

I met my wife in 07, had my first beautiful daughter in 09 and my second little girl was born in 11.

I will now never forget ages and anniversaries ever thanks to the mighty cats.

Yeah, I know what you mean. First love left me in '89 / got the sack in '92 / alcoholic late 90s/early 2000s / divorced in 2008 / Dad died in 2010. :D

Some life already lived here James.

Were you born in 1970? If so, I trust the second half of this mortal coil proves to be full of the joy, satisfaction and sweetness this last Cats flag has brought all Geelong people.

Oh, it already has. :thumbsu:

But if the dog dies early next year, we've no chance of back-to-back!

Maybe. But I think you are taking it too literally. It is a 'footy fantasy' piece - and that is how it reads.

Not fantasy as in non-fiction, but fantasy as in any footy supporters penchant for reality to match our greatest desires. And in this case the grand final did that. But he knows, and we know, it is only a game in the end.

His writing drips with melodramatic theatrics, which are designed to foster an emotional response in his readers.

The Mandela stuff is hyperbole. He knows footy and Apartheid etc are not equivalent. He has clearly learned/inherited this style of expression from his father who was a preacher.

Had to learn that it was Scarlo that we needed, that would get it all done. :D

Oh how right you are. Not only supremely skilled, he does seem to set the game in slow motion when he has the ball but so competitive and drives the play from the backline.
Thank him for 2009 after our season was looking a little wonky and Scarlett called the players together for that bbq at his place after we had lost to, I think, the bulldogs. The watch the first final against them and how he directed the play. Classis Scarlett.
A fitting Mayor.

Dinner all sorted?

I was just watching the replay and noticed just before 3 qtr time, this interesting picture and have no idea what it means?

I was going to put this on the Collingwood board, as I thought they may have a ready explanation, but didn't want to stir anything up (I've had enough fun with my Pies supporting mates already :)) and am genuinely curious as to what it means.

Re: Dinner all sorted?

Sponsorship from McDonalds it is related to their family dinner box. There's also a couple of signs in the magpie coaches box.

I wish Gideon Haigh wrote more about footy. The only silver lining of last summer was getting to read his various articles expertly dismantling Cricket Australia's shambolic performance.

Re: Grand Final Autopsy Thread - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 38 points!

"I look at Nick Maxwell who is so not a Geelong footballer, and Harry O, who could be."

So friggin' true. Harry deserves better in life.

You reckon? I think they're perfectly suited. I'm very glad he's not a Geelong player myself. Unless we suddenly need an unaccountable defender who bombs the ball forward without looking.
