I got AFL 2003 the other day on PC and i cant stop playing it. I am in a season with Melbourne and We are on top of the ladder and we are coming up to the Carlton game in round 15. The only loss i had was to Richmond in round 3 when i got thrashed. In the ladder Brisbane are 2nd and surprize, surprize Carlton are on the bottom.. I have Nich out of the side injured and Vardy is having a great season. And Travis is not far behind. We still have a few problems with the tall forwards. If anyone has't got it they should, its a great game.

I played the Tigers today. I was down at half time but I switched the Biz to full forward and he won the game for me by kicking 4 second half goals!

A friend of mine is working on the new one, and said it will be a lot better. There'll be lots more stats for starters, such as a goalkicking table. I've only played 2003 once, but thought it was very good.

It'd want to have more than just "more stats."

Something even slightly resembling AFL football would be good.

Oh, and a framerate that doesn't make me feel sick.

AFL Live 2003 was without question the worst game of last year on any platform.

AFL Live 2003 wasnt very good but it is the starting step of what will hopefully lead to a good game. You have to give the them credit for at least giving it a bash as making a game where there is 36 players all on the one field and all are capable of going anywhere and doing anything is quite a task.

The graphics were ok, the sound needs work and the little things like stats etc need to be improved but the glaring problem was gameplay. It had many flaws, too easy to break from the center without being touched and if the opposition broke from the center they would find their CHF unmarked around 40 meters out? Stuff like that doesnt happen in football.

Anyways looking forward to an improved version in the future.

That was so annoying it wasn't funny. It happens so many times I have to wonder where the hell Jade Rawlings gets to.

Definitely the most frustrating part of gameplay.
How about having the option of tagging players? Or having strategies such as flooding, dropping certain players a kick behind play, having players free in defence, etc etc.

Christ, sorry I mentioned it. I did say "more stats for starters", did I not?

My mate said it wasn't bad for a first-up game, which is about right. Do you expect the first one to be the finished article? Of course there'll be things wrong with it.

Oh, where do I start?

I only played the PC version, so I can't talk about the rest, but it was the worst port I've played.

First, the game had serious display problems on the GeForce 4 MX. I had to manually edit the registry even to play the game.

Second, the multiplayer is idiotic - do you know ANYONE who has more than one controller or joystick for a PC? PC multiplayer means internet/network play, or at least two players on one keyboard.

Third, you can't change the key settings. Oh wait, you can pick between one of a few presets, all of which only use four keys.

Fourth, the statistics were severely lacking. The major reason I kept playing was to find out how many goals Lloyd kicked for the season.

Fifth, it's way too easy, and it's actually easier the simpler you play. If you try and play with tactics and passing to leads, you'll be in trouble, whereas if you just grab the ball and kick it long, you win.

Sixth, playing on barely works. If you want to play on, you take the mark, go back on the mark while the opposition gets into position, and THEN play on.

Seventh, if you take a mark and the ball's gone less than fifteen metres, your player still acts as if it was a proper mark. The opposition doesn't.

I should note that a large part of why I'm so angry at this game is that it could have been so good. If they'd put an additional few months into it, it would have been excellent. Here's hoping for 2004. Winmar, if your mate's working on it, tell him to make a real PC version, as opposed to a console game that happens to sort of work on the PC.

edit: YES, of course I expect the first one to be a finished product. I really do expect games I buy to be finished games. I don't spend seventy dollars on a beta test.

AFL Live 2003 is a good game, but the thing that annoys me the most is that when you have a shot at goal you have no control over how accurate the shot is if you are on the run. It just comes down to luck.

Does anyone remember the old, old, old AFL game on Nintendo?? When you got within scoring range (on the run or set shot) a bar would appear on the bottom of the screen. A line would then move from side to side and the closer you get to goal the slower it would go. Then it was a matter of having a shot when the line was in the centre. I prefered this way of scoring better and actually think that this game was and still is one of the best footy games ever brought out.

A friend of mine gave me her cartridge of that the other day because she found it, yet she doesn't have a NES anymore. I dusted off the old NES, set it up, but the game didn't work. Even the old trick of blowing into the cartridge or the system didn't help.

Ok, by the finished product I meant everything was as good as it could possibly be given it was a first-up game. I was thinking of games like the FIFA series.......the first couple were good, but still needed looooots of work, but they got it together by about 1998. I guess it all comes down to how much time the company gives the developers to finish the game. They have deadlines which have to be met, and the company doesn't always allow them to do everything they'd like to do I guess. At least there should be progression after this one. I play Pro Evolution Soccer 2, which is no better that the first one. It's still the best soccer game I've played, but you can tell they put SFA effort into improving it. From what I hear, AFL 2004 won't be like that.

Anyway, I don't think I'll buy 2003, because by the sounds of things it would drive me crazy! Don't get too emotional folks - it's just a computer game! Read a book, it won't **** you off as much. :)

Seems to be a thing in the AFL games that if the computer gets the ball out the centre, the CHF will lead while your CHB stands dead still. It happened in AFL 97, 98 and last years version. This will hopefully be fixed.

AFL Live 2003 is a good game,

I beg to differ.

AFL Live 2003 is a pile of sh|t.

The important thing when making a sports game is to at least attempt to implement all, or most, of the different elements that make up the real life game.

One of the most important, if not THE most important element of Australian Rules Football is the physical contact.

Yet, in AFL Live, hard physical contact is very much non-existant.

Put simply, players need to, at the very least, bump into each other automatically.

I yearn for the day that I buy my new AFL videogame, take control of Barry Hall (or somebody of similar physique), charge at an oncoming opponent who has the ball, and have one of the following things happen:

A) I hold down my "sprint" button as I'm lining up my opponent and then quickly press my "bump/attack" button and flatten the oncoming opponent with a giant hip and shoulder, knocking him senseless, or...

B) I hold down my "sprint" button and forget to press my "bump/attack" button, only to have my oncoming (human) opponent crash through me with the ball because he DID remember to press his "fend off/defend" button, or......

C) We both press our respective "attack/defend" buttons and crash into each other, forcing the ball free from the opponent, and leaving us both able to get up and chase it, or.....

D) We both forget to press our respective "attack/defend" buttons and knock each other out cold.

All things that happen regularly in a game of football, yet NEVER in AFL Live 2003.

I will not continue with a list of things that are wrong in AFL Live, because I can sum it up much easier by saying "everything".
