AFL on 9 and Foxtel

JOd - living in QLD you would already pay to watch footy. That is if you want to see more than 2 games per weekend and not stay up till midnight or later to watch them. Not to mention any AFL style show, such as the Melb Footyshow, The Game, the Sunday footy show etc etc etc.

Ch7 QLD even pre-empts the Rex Hunt footy show with all sorts of stuff. Dirt Car racing (still can't get over the rex hunt GF and Prelim editions in 1999 being axed infavour of that), junior Rugby Union etc etc etc. If it wasn't for pay tv QLD viewers would get jack shit! AND ch7 know that. Why would they put it on free to air up here if there affilate c7 get us to pay to watch it?

Danni, you guys seem to have it tough over there. Perth veiwers see all 8 games every weekend on 7, we get them at 7:30 friday nights usually a double header where you will see 1 game after another. Then we get them Sat mornings right through the afternoon, then theres usually a 8:30 sat night game. Then we get all the rest on Sunday, i thought everyone saw all the games.
Thats a pity.

A typical weeks AFL viewing in Brisbane:

CH7
Monday - Sometimes a replay of the match of the round (not always) 11.45pm
Tuesday - Nothing
Wednesday - Nothing
Thursday - Nothing
Friday - 11.45pm - 12.30 start of replay of Friday night football.
Saturday - 15mins of AFL news on the local sports show, Sports Scene.
- 2.00pm AFL Match of the Day
Sunday - AFL Match of the day

C7 sports
Monday - replay of weekend games and AFL magazine show, "Footy Feedback"
Tuesday - replay of a weekend game, replay of Talking Footy
Wednesday - replay of a weekend game and on c7 sports 2, all weekend games replayed back to back.
Thursday - AFL Weekly show Footy Focus, and replay of 'the game' starting about 11.30pm
Friday - Live Friday night Football
Saturday, morning, replay of Friday night game, sometimes live afternoon game, Live Saturday night Football, other Saturday games replayed during the night.
Sunday - replay of saturdays games in morning, Live Sunday Afternoon Football. And sometimes a weekend 'wrap'show on Sunday evening, talking about all the games.

Also during the week on c7 sports, they replay ever game at least once, have replays of 'great matches' from any year/season, and 'one on one' interviews with footy greats.

So as you can see it is not much use having just CH7 in Brisbane if you want to watch football! And they are getting us to pay to buy C7 sports to watch football. Why on earth would they increase free to air in Brisbane when they already have us paying to watch it on C7?

Apart from Pay TV there will also be Digital TV.

I dont know much about it, but mabye this will dent Pay TV, as for example Ch7 will be able to show movies & docos & footy etc, simultaneously on 3 different channels.

I do know that the big players (i.e Murdoch) lobbied the piss weak goverment to protect their interests whcih are threatened by Digital TV.

Long live ABC radio!

The only good thing about 9-Foxtel getting the rights is it would give me an excuse to override the wife & get cable. Mind you from my experience with friends who have cable its a choice of 5 free to air channels with nothing but crap on against pay tv with 20 channels with nothing but crap on.

Seriously in SA we get massive AFL coverage. Friday nights, Saturdays, Sundays, whenever. The away local team is always live on TV & the Home local team is always shown in delay.
We probably get 7 full games out of the 8 games each week & on some occasions we have had 3 games on a Saturday night.

I don't want this to change & I don't want to have to pay for footy on TV. How can I be better off paying for something I now get for free??????????????

in terms of 7's current coverage, its pretty much ok if your a eagles/dockers fan in perth or a crows/port fan in adelaide, its just if you happen to be a...er....say...bombers fan in perth that you get some big dissappointments, like missing the North v Essendon H&A game, or the Dees Dons H&A game. Mostly they do it here if the dockers are playing a subi game and they think putting an MCG blockbuster on tv would affect the crowd numbers.

Kinda why i was glad to see the bombers have so many friday nighters next year, as it means guranteed coverage.

Thing is, if I was guaranteed to see my team play every week on tv, id quite happily pay for that privilege, rather than hoping 7 doesnt screw me with its weekly choice.

Lesser of two evils, 9 or 7.

Unfortunately it will one day become reality that free to air will be a thing of the past.

Pay TV is with us and can only grow, with digital TV and intetnet/cable/satelite options all opening up and growing at exceptional rates, free to air will go the way of Black and White (Hi Craig) and become a small part of the thousands of choices will all will have.

The price to pay for those choices will be cold hard cash.

9 and 7 are not even looking at this long term, with the growth of digital just around the corner, we all will one day not only be able to select which game to watch, but how to watch it, what cameras we want used, commentators and on screen options like scores, stats etc.

Its all coming, Brave New World is here. Huxley was right, Orwell was wrong, again a lesser of two evils.

A despondent Grendel.

originally quoted by me:
My own feeling is that the TV rights will be too big for any one entity to own and they will be split between Channel 7 / 9 and Optus / Foxtel.

Picked this one of the AFL website - An article written by Doug Stewart of the Daily Telegraph.

"THE AFL could split its broadcast rights to maximise profit and offer separate packages to both Channel 7 and Channel 9.

This is especially likely if Seven cannot match the bid of the joint Channel 9-Channel 10-Foxtel-Telstra consortium but the AFL is reluctant to sever totally ties with its network partner of 44 seasons.

Such a ploy would see continued on-screen competition between the two major players thus ensuring coverage of the highest quality.

A similar model already exists in the United States for its National Football League.

Three seasons ago ABC, CBS, ESPN and Foxtel paid a combined $30billion for the joint rights over 10 years.

At the time the amount was considered outrageous but it has proven appropriate for all parties.

For the AFL, giving part-coverage to Seven and Nine is no more illogical than a split involving Nine and Ten, which has reportedly been proposed by the joint consortium.

Seven could have Friday night and Sunday's double-header with Nine covering Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.

Importantly, that arrangement would not interrupt Nine's rugby league commitments in NSW and Queensland.

The key for most viewers is the pledge by AFL chief executive Wayne Jackson that there will be no reduction in the number of games covered on free-to-air television.-- "

I think you actually mean the big players are Packer and Stokes and not Murdock (Although he is very powerful).

What I'm trying to get at is that Murdoch situation is a bit different from the others I mentioned. He wants the government to relax media laws so he can set up his own free-to-air station on Digital T.V.

While the others want to keep to current "strict media laws"

The government is siding with Stokes/Packer.

The bidding war for AFL television rights could become a legal brawl after a decision by the league to split pay TV and free-to-air rights - potentially advantaging rivals of the incumbent Seven Network.

Sometimes, you've just gotta blow your own trumpet when it looks like you are right!
