And which 4 players from the 20-30 range do you suggest gets their career shortened? (dont say Jericho, McGregor or Gallman because their already gone)

Whos it gonna be from the remains.

OK then

If you are looking at it at the point of view of which players to delist, and i would only delist 4. Then we need to look at, if these 4 32 year olds were maintained on our list, the probabilites of them playing AFL games for Adelaide in 2009 and beyond.

Player 2009 2010 2011
Edwards Very Good Good Some
Mcleod Very Good Good Some
Goodwin Very Good Some slight
Basset Good Slight -

The obvios
Biglands None --
McGregor Slight None None
Jericho Slight Slight Slight

The possibly 1 player from
Hentshel
Gallman
1 18/19 year old that the club believes has little chance of making it in the AFL

Towards the end of 2007 we fell in a hole when Rutten and Basset got injured. We had delisted Ben Hart, I just think that in hindsight he was retired 1 year to early. 2007 he played good footy for North Adelaide and in there finals campain. Even if he was kept on our AFL list in 2007, and only played a handfull of AFL games, he would of been handy.

I support that the club had to be aggressive with our list over the last 2 years, but we are no longer in that positon. I believe that now we have so many talented 18/19 players in our list, and a players 20-25 that for the remainder of the squad age does not need to come into it. Delist purely based on, the quality of the player, and what they can offer AFC in 2009.

I was at the TD last year when Robert Harvey of St Kilda tore the crows apart as a 34 year old. Goodwin, Edwards and Mcleod are players of the same ilk as harvey and should be maintained.

Due to the Hart & Torney episodes, I think a lot of people are over estimating the likelihood that the club will delist their older players. I easily expect between 2 and 4 retirements this year.

:thumbsu:

spot on.

vader talked about risk management

its actually more of a risk to go into 2009 without goody edwards mcleod.

if they retire their place in the team is filled by a rookie. if they play on and get injured their place in the team is filled by a rookie.

whats the diff?

youy cant say they are taking the spot of a younger player because we are developing a number of kids as it is.

It's not just because of the Hart & Torney episodes. The club have promised Aggressive List Management this year.

The linked article concludes with the following line (quoting Neil Craig):
“With the way it's fallen, it's probably helped us and we'll have to be as aggressive this year as we were last year.”

The Hart & Torney episodes have given us a context for what the club means by "Aggressive List Management".

There are also the additional considerations caused by the compromising of the next three drafts. We will be wanting to go long in this draft so we can go short in each of those.

The other thing NC has consistently said is that we don't rebuild, ie our culture is to be competitive every year.

Whenever we have been in trouble this year Goody has gone onto the ball and Edwards has been (with Thommo) our most effective midfielder.

Can we be competitive next year without Goodwin, McLeod and Edwards? Will NC want to keep one of Goody/Edwards as insurance to maintain our standards?

Vader - any idea what our average list age would be if the big 3 (plus Bassett, Biglands, McGregor) go and are replaced by 18 yr olds?

Bassett is almost 32
Biglands almost 31
McGregor almost 28

Replacing them with 18yo means losing 14, 13 and 10 years of experience = 36 years.

Natural aging of the list means that remaining players are 37 years older than they were 12 months ago.

So, if these were our only list changes then the list would actually be 1yr older in total - or around 10 days older (per player) on average.

That's a very rough, back of the envelope type calculation.

.

It could mean anything.

For example if the club considered itself well placed in the ruck department with Maric Moran and Tipett, it may elect to deal its other promising ruckman for a player/pick.

It could mean calling time early on an untried player from last years draft- if they thought we had another Pfeifer/Meesen in the midst.

It could mean doing the old "we are going to delist you, but may re-draft you if theres nothing better."

Either way it is not as clear cut as i first thought. You'd reckon at least 6 have to go, and its hard to find 6 players worthy of delisting. More and more I think they are going to cut Hentschel. They way NC dances around the question. It could be unfortunate circumstrances... the 17th side, burtons knee, having Gill, Tippett, Walker, Sellar....

Im almost positive Bass will get the tap too.

Those are pointless questions because there is no way we will lose all three of the players you mentioned and I'm pretty sure no one has even suggested we would/should. At most one of them might not be around next year but even that seems unlikely.

McLeod is already signed on for 2009. Can we risk having both Goodwin & Edwards on our list next year as well?

Short answer is yes. Long answer is probably yes as well :p

NC is the kind of guy who will look to field the best side, it will come down to if he believes that player will be in his best side next year or not. It is not like the McGregor scenario of last year, all the oldies in question have played every game this year and are part of the core group.

Interesting stats Vader. I think we can safely say next year will be the final year for Macca, Goody and Edwards. One probably needs to go this year but considering we don't have many players aged 28+ (assuming Bassett retires ) we can afford to give all 3 another year. Amazing how quickly a list can be turned over.

I'm not so sure that all three will be gone next year either. My gut feel is that we'll be aiming to lose one this year (Goodwin - back problems), one next year (Edwards) and the last in 2010 (Macca). Of course, I could be completely wrong. The end can come surprisingly quickly when players reach this age.
