Roast AFL 'round zero' What a load of crap ...

I like Voss's idea of games in every state to start the year.
Something like this

Thursday
Richmond v Carlton MCG

Friday
Sydney v Collingwood SCG

Saturday
Brisbane v Melbourne - Gabba
GWS v Geelong - Giants Stadium
Adelaide v Western Bulldogs - AO
Fremantle v St.Kilda - Optus

Sunday
Gold Coast v North Melbourne - Carrara
West Coast v Hawthorn - Optus
Port Adelaide v Essendon - AO

Which is 15 minutes of AFL you watched than if Opening round didn't exist.

Lol. And your point is what exactly?

Mine is a hell of a lot more people would be watching if we didn't have this half arsed start to the season.

IMO the AFL are on the brink of losing a lot of fans and TV ratings because of mismanagement of the fixture and other inequalities it has endorsed over time.

Which is a shame as the competition could be run so much better and without the boys club doing dodgy deals behind closed doors.

It's funny because people said the same thing last year and then we saw this happen outside of QLD & NSW in round 1:

Thurs: Carlton v Richmond @ MCG - 83k
Fri: Collingwood v Sydney @ MCG - 78k
Sat: Essendon v Hawthorn @ MCG - 83k
Sat: Geelong v St Kilda @ GMHBA - 39k
Sun: Melbourne v Bulldogs @ MCG - 44k
Sun: Port Adelaide v West Coast @ AO - 33k
Sun: Fremantle v Brisbane @ PS - 40k

Based on last year and very likely this year as well, it's a fallacy to say people are less interested in Round 1 due to the existence of Opening Round. If anything, it would appear Opening Round creates an even bigger motivational for footy goers in the southern states (Victorians in particular) to attend Round 1 games when compared to years prior. The AFL are probably thinking 'Oh, you feel like you're missing out? Great! Now you're more likely to go to the games this weekend.'

So go ahead and continue your Opening Round outrage, because the AFL knows that the outrage is very likely to result in record crowds the following week. Don't be surprised if we're talking about a new record for Round 1 crowds this time next week. As Andrew Dillon said, Opening Round is going to continue until the impressive crowds (in both OR and/or R1) stop showing up.
This is the same dumb take that the AFL keep pushing,

Opening round last year didn't change my mind to go and watch my team R1 your taking the piss if you think it does for anyone,

Thurs: Carlton v Richmond @ MCG - 83k (Was getting 80k+ every year)
Fri: Collingwood v Sydney @ MCG - 78k (Flag unfurling always get big crowds regardless)
Sat: Essendon v Hawthorn @ MCG - 83k (Gets 60k-70k early every year)
Sat: Geelong v St Kilda @ GMHBA - 39k (Get that weekly for home games)
Sun: Melbourne v Bulldogs @ MCG - 44k (Had 48k R1 the year prior)
Sun: Port Adelaide v West Coast @ AO - 33k (Always get 30-35k at home games)
Sun: Fremantle v Brisbane @ PS - 40k (Always get 40k at home games)

This sort of demented Stockholm syndrome logic is terrible from the AFL. They are just rigging the fixture so they have big games as none of the minow’s are hosting an interstate team. They could get the same result without opening round buggering it up.
Literally this,

Magically if they didn't give GC and GWS home games it would've been even bigger

Coll were unfurling their flag so crowd is boosted.

Ess/Haw crowd is made up.

i like that the AFL is so blatantly amateur now, people can see it for what it is, a footy themed sports entertainment production. who will win? the bird franchise from Sydney or from Perth? Victorian team #7 or #10? can the token Interstate team for this year make The Big Dance?! Oh Boy, I Can't Wait To Pay $35 A Month And Waste 8 Hours A Weekend To Find Out!!!!!!!!

I do think we need maybe a game in Perth Sunday night and a game in Melbourne Monday afternoon to cap off the weekend.

But it would be silly not to continue with this concept, as it really helps the northern teams and all the statistics back that up. People need to start thinking of the growth of the game more, rising tides lift all boats philosophy.

Dillon is terrible at explaining it all, the afl promotion and messaging leaves a lot to be desired and has allowed this negative sentiment to rise without the details around why the concept was invented.

GWS and Gold Coast numbers are bullshit

Sydney and Brisbane just came off a premiership and GF

Your source for that claim, or just 'the vibe'?

Interesting then the big rise in membership at the start of 24 prior to each club even playing in the grand final.
18k at a home semi final tends to suggest theyre not accurate numbers

Both teams had played in GFs within 2 years and were clearly contenders again not a hard concept to grasp and might I add neither team struggled over the past 5 years with crowd numbers when competitive

How much of that growth is due to the opening round, and how much is it based on playing a home game in round 1 and then playing a big team?

If the opening round was a thing that people seemed invested in...then lets see the AFL schedule the Gold Coast v Kangas....

They won't, becuase it is not a thing. It has all to do with the first home game of the season against Collingwood/Essendon.

can't pump up their own tyres for "record breaking round 1 attendance" if they do that
