Rules AFL to propose introduction of last touch rule from 2026

Look forward to players hand balling into opposition feet for a rebound over the line near the boundary line.
It happens now but if you miss their feet, it would be a penalty against your team with the last touch rule between the arks.

Ah k so players will pull out of every ground ball near the boundary. Unless they get it first and handball it into an opposition player
It's not a free if it's rushed out of bounds. It's only a free when handpassed or kicked without touching anybody else.
Perhaps watch the AFLW this weekend to get an idea. It works pretty well.

The SANFL has had this rule for years and it works fine. It removes most grey areas, and with the farce that is the insufficient intent interpretation, this change actually makes sense.

This won't happen anywhere near the amount of times you'd think.

So to solve the imaginary issue of "balls going out of bounds"(?), they introduced insufficient intent, creating a new issue when they failed to reliably interpret players' intention in a manner reasonable to the spirit of the game and human comprehension, and now are completely changing how boundary lines work in order to fix the problem they created in the first place?

Sounds like the AFL.

Nothing from AFLW should ever be used as a reason for the AFL to do anything.

Swann intent on putting his stamp on the game no matter how ****ing dumb it is.

The rule has been fantastic in the SANFL and in your instance it is not a free kick anyway.
It’s really the “last disposal rule” not “last touch rule”
Has to to be a direct handball or kick that goes OOB
Spoils, handballs knocked away, dropped marks etc are a throw in as normal

I might not mind at as a "last control" rule, even that needs trialling first.
Any disposal that is not touched by another player, take the ball and get tackled (or walk) over the line, clear spoils that aren't touched before going over, etc.

Last touch will just invite more congestion by maing it too dangerous to play wide, as well as see players elect not to take the ball. Do we want to reward people who aren't playing the ball?

I know people will point to some state leagues, but the AFL (except North v West Coast) is a clear notch up on pace and pressure over even the best state league games.

It’s only kicks or handball between arcs. Spoils and spillage are as normal..

Umps need some time to adapt to the current rules, as opposed to dynamically changing them yearly. Perhaps watch some AFL, it works pretty well

Am I the only one who thought the insufficient intent rule was actually one of the least controversial ones this year?

Unlike the ruck rules and holding the ball or incorrect disposal I could actually tell which way it was going to be paid 95% of the time.

Yeah well, I would suggest that the 'insufficient intent' rule has been the source of some controversy. Haven't you noticed?

Mind you, I guess the current rules do encourage a good deal of crowd participation but that does create potential bias at different venues.

I guess some might miss that theatrical aspect.

Well maybe but it's a relatively easy fix. However I do recall the Amon one a week ago for the Hawks causing some discontent. That one would be a throw in with the last touch rules because it wasn't between the arcs.

I lived in Adelaide for 4 years and watched plenty of SANFL. In my lifetime it hasnt been closed to the level of the VFL/AFL.
Did you notice the last touch rule much? That's the subject of the thread. Not so much the levels of different leagues.
