The Queensland and Northern Territory testing will be done on Saturday, October 3, while a date is not yet locked in for the Victorian girls to test due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the state.

Bond Uni and Coolangatta have finished in the top 2 positions on the QAFLW ladder after big wins today in the final round of the home and away season. I'd say there's an excellent chance the GC two teams will meet in the Grand Final for the first ever all-Gold Coast QAFLW GF.

Keep an eye on Maddison Levi from Bond Uni. She is an absolute gun who will be on our AFLW list next month.

AFLW All-Australian Sarah Perkins is poised to play for Gold Coast in 2021.

Victorian Perkins, 27, has nominated Queensland as her region of choice in the state-based women's draft, which will be held on the night of October 6.

Key forward Perkins burst onto the scene in the first year of AFLW in 2017, booting four goals for Adelaide in the final round against Collingwood to get the Crows into a grand final against the Brisbane Lions, a match Adelaide ultimately won.

Perkins was named in the All-Australian team that year after kicking 11 majors for the season.

However she gradually fell out of favour with the Crows, missing selection for the 2019 grand final against Carlton and being delisted at the end of that season.

She was overlooked in last year's draft but joined Melbourne as a train-on player, eventually playing three matches for the injury-hit Demons as a top-up player.

Perkins kicked a goal in the qualifying final win over Greater Western Sydney before the season was prematurely ended - without a premiership being awarded - because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However as Perkins was only a top-up player for the Dees, she was not eligible to be re-signed by the club in last month's sign and trade period.

She had to nominate for the draft instead. Despite being a Melbourne local, Perkins has instead chosen to nominate in the Queensland draft pool, meaning she is only eligible to be selected by the Suns and the Lions.
Sources close to the situation indicated that the Lions had not shown any interest in Perkins, and that is the Suns' interest which has enticed her to the Sunshine State.

Didn't see that coming but happy to have her on the list if she can still play at the standard required of a current AFLW player.

Clearly our list managers have identified experienced mature recruits as a priority this off season. We've already brought in Drennan (29) and adding Perkins (27) should help the younger girls even more. Outside of Kindy Howarth, I felt we struggled a little bit to kick goals this year so to add another scoring option is a good thing.

So I'd say we already know four players we are going to draft this year - Maddison Levi (Gold Coast), Annise Bradfield (Gold Coast), Daisy D'Arcy (Townsville) and Sarah Perkins (Melbourne). Considering we traded two players (Smith and Hammans) and delisted five others, that leaves two extra draft spots open when you consider Drennan has taken another list spot. My guess is we'll draft Lucy Single (New Zealand/Gold Coast) and an older state player from SA, WA or NSW/ACT.

Minor Premiers Bond Uni found a way to choke their premiership chances again this year after a surprising 35 point prelim loss to Yeronga over the weekend. It should probably be pointed out that 3 of the 6 bests named for Yeronga that day were actually our AFLW listed players - Jade Pregelj, Jacqui Yorston and Sam Virgo. Certainly disappointing for the season to end this way for Bond but they'll be back next year with a strong team.

Better news in the other prelim where the Coolangatta Bluebirds defeated Maroochydore by 22 points. Quite a few of our AFLW girls were influential for Cooly that day as well with Paige Parker, Leah Kaslar, Kate Surman and Kitara Farrar all playing well. Lauren James kicked a bag of 6 in the prelim which I'm guessing may catch the eye of some AFLW recruiters out there. So the 2020 QAFLW Grand Final between Coolangatta and Yeronga is this Saturday afternoon at Bond University. As a Suns fan, you probably can't really lose either way because there's a decent amount of our girls on both teams but the Gold Coaster in me is pulling for Cooly.

Special shoutout to the Southport women's team competing in the QFAW Div 1 (one level below QAFLW) Grand Final this Saturday against Surfers Paradise. It is Southport's inaugural women's season and they've already collected a minor premiership as well as a Grand Final spot. That game will be played immediately after the QAFLW GF at Bond University. I've written this before in this thread but don't be surprised to see Southport enter the QAFLW next season. The Sharks have made no secret of the fact that they want to enter the QAFLW as soon as possible and clearly they have taken this season very seriously. 2021 could be a big year for Southport with the men competing in the new VFL and the women competing in the QAFLW.

A draft look:

In theory, the Academies do not guarantee only players from their respective academies, so the Suns holding the first selection in the draft could swoop on Farquharson or anyone they wish in the open Queensland draft. Though they also have the player with the largest endurance base across the board in their Academy with Daisy D’Arcy a standout prospect. She is a consistent all-round player and won the yo-yo test in the preseason by so much, she was left doing laps by herself for some time. The male and female testing is done differently, but her score was the equivalent of a 22.1 – absolute elite.

Another couple of AFL Women’s National Academy members who earned Draft Combine invites are Bond University’s Maddison Levi, and Southport’s Annise Bradfield. Both have come through the Queensland pathway system and have shown great promise in the AFL Women’s Under 18s level in past seasons. Also standing out in the QAFL Women’s competition was Coolangatta Tweed’s Ebony Peterson who also earned a Draft Combine invite. Throw in the likes of fellow Academy members Jasmyn Davison, Annie Muir and Keyshia Matenga who all had strong seasons, and the Suns Academy have plenty to pick from.

As an overall look at other Queensland options, Beth Pinchin is a lynchpin defender who captained the Suns Academy and could be ready to make the next step up, whilst a couple of dual-sport academy members Lucy Single (rugby 7s and karate) and Laura Blue (soccer) both earned invites, as did Coorparoo’s inside midfielder, Brooke Spence.

I did see on the QAFL account there is gonna be an all stars game. In a few days. So Its between the academies?
No, usually there would be an all stars game nationally with two teams being split with players across the nation however with COVID, each state will now host their own all stars game which would essentially mean more players are going to have the opportunity to put their cases forward for draft night Tuesday.
SA, WA, NT have already had theirs

Correct.

On Saturday 3 October, Queensland’s top male and female young AFL talent will take part in the NAB AFL and AFLW Draft Combine at Emmanuel and Somerset Colleges on the Gold Coast.

...

Following the Combine, the women will play in an NAB AFLW All-Star Match on Sunday 4 October between Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast SUNS Academy players as an additional opportunity to showcase their talent. The match will take place at Bond University at 1pm.

I think it's also important to mention that Southport won the QFAW Division 1 Grand Final on Sunday and the rumour is they will be accepted into the QAFLW for next season. That's a fantastic outcome for Gold Coast women's footy to have three local teams in the top state league division. Southport can service the northern suburbs, Bond University can service the central suburbs and Coolangatta will continue to service the southern suburbs. Southport and Bond specifically are more than willing to throw lots of money and resources at women's football and that will no doubt help our academy pathways.

Ernst, 32, has juggled her dual careers of football and medicine since making her debut in 2017 for the Western Bulldogs.

Currently working as a doctor at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital, Ernst was one of those working on the frontline during the COVID-19 outbreak.

She said the decision to retire ahead of the 2021 NAB AFLW season was a difficult one but was in the best interests of all parties as she continues to pursue the next phase in her medical career.

Sad to see her retire

This is a nice story about two academy girls from Cairns with famous football blood. Obviously Che Cockatoo-Collins is their uncle and Nakia Cockatoo is their cousin. Does anyone know when they are draft eligible? Would be nice to get a Cockatoo or two into our club given their strong links to North Queensland footy and that area being a part of our zone.

The AFLW website also decided to do a story on Daisy D'Arcy today:

The Queensland AFLW Draft Combine is taking place on the Gold Coast today and the QClash academy match will be played tomorrow at 1pm. Sam Iles is coaching our female academy team in that game. I'm expecting Maddison Levi, Daisy D'Arcy, Annise Bradfield and Lucy Single to star in that game. It's their last chance to show recruiters what they've got before Tuesday's draft and now that we have two extra spots available on our list it should give some of the girls even more motivation to perform in the All Stars game. Below is a link to the stream of that game.

BOND University's Maddison Levi has starred in the Queensland edition of the NAB AFLW Draft Combine, breaking the combine 20m sprint record. Previously held by former Carlton AFLW player Emerson Wood who ran 3.129 seconds in 2018, Levi became the first AFLW combine participant to break the three-second barrier.

Our academy girls are dominating Brisbane at Bond University right now. Up by 21 points at quarter time. Forward Jasmyn Davidson is the one to keep an eye on so far. She's kicked two goals already and took a really nice mark on the lead just before quarter time.

Here is a stream for anyone who wants to watch:

In the end, Brisbane mounted a huge comeback and our academy girls only just held on by 1 point.

Lucy Single and Teagan Levi impressed me the most through the midfield. Unfortunately, T.Levi injured her left leg in the last five minutes of the game but I believe she isn't draft eligible until next year anyway so she'll have plenty of time to recover.

I'm convinced Single, M.Levi and D'Arcy will all be draft by us on Tuesday. Forwards Tarlinton and Davidson are also possibilities to be drafted by us, especially considering we traded a forward in Taylor Smith a few weeks ago.

Thought I'd tune in and watch the Draft....20minutes down there's been 1 selection and the 3 ladies have been yabbering on about Richmond's Pick 43.
The No1 pick is now being interviewed and we're 25 mins down.....thats it for me...I'll read about tomorrow somewhere...
Yeah they do drag on dont they.. same thing with the men’s Draft
