Sound like we had a c40point loss in the practice game against the Dees at Casey on the weekend.

Symonds and Flockhart both got their first goals in the brown & gold

Midfield duo Emily Bates and Eliza West were best-afield for the Hawks, and were well supported by Mikayla Williamson on the wing. Tilly Lucas-Rodd and Tamara Smith stood up under enormous pressure in defence, and were joined by recruit Najwa Allen in the second half.

Draftees Elli Symonds, Daisy Flockhart and Grace Baba all had their moments in the sun – the former two hitting the scoreboard and the latter playing at both ends – while recruit Keely Coyne made a successful return to football after rupturing her ACL in 2023.

FINAL SCORE
Melbourne 9.8 (62) def Hawthorn 4.4 (28)

Draftee Grace Baba cops a one match suspension for a pretty crude swing at her Tigers opponent's midriff behind the play

LAST year's McClelland Trophy winner Hawthorn did plenty of damage on the scoreboard against Richmond on Sunday, posting a 37-point win in their final practice match.

The Hawks were impressive in their ball movement, both from stoppage and the back half, and dominated clearances 27-17.

Captain Emily Bates (23 disposals, seven inside 50s) was an impressive connector from the midfield, as was Tilly Lucas-Rodd (19 disposals, five inside 50s) coming from the back half.

Jasmine Fleming (19 disposals, 10 handball receives) moved well from the contest, as did 2024 Hawthorn best and fairest winner Eliza West (22 disposals, three clearances), but unfortunately Casey Sherriff copped a head knock in the second term and was ruled out for the remainder of the game as a precaution.

Young gun Hayley McLaughlin (14 disposals, one goal) looked dangerous teaming up with Greta Bodey (12 disposals, two goals) in the front half, and last year's leading goalkicker Aine McDonagh got busy with three goals.

Dunno where else to put it, but sad to see Mattea Breed out for the season at the Pies.

Wonder if we'll ever get the full story about why she left the Hawks apart from a salary dispute - the squad still seems very close to her judging by shared photos/comments on Insta.

I spoke to her (in her fairly inebriated state) at last years bnf, and she said that she didnt want to leave, but there was no garuantee on her future due to numerous factors (direction the club was going in, her onfield role, finance)

Didnt want to leave, but had to do what was best for her.
