I dont get the Daisy hate

She was at the time by far the best women's player at a time when they did it tough with no recognition

Phillips is a better player but Daisy deserves her place in women's footy history

Couldn’t agree more. My daughter and I went to a few Darebin games when Noffy was playing for them, so I’ve seen a fair bit of Daisy. Daisy is a remarkably good footballer and a match winner. Erin’s greatness doesn’t require others to be torn down to let her shine - she stands out in her own right.

Agreed - and furthermore, I really don't like it when people start to make fun of her appearance.

I mean, really? In a debate about who is the greatest women's player, between unquestionably the two best performed women's players, we're making fun of Daisy's high hairline? One of the whole points of having elite women's sporting comps is to get away from the idea that a woman's appearance is her defining feature. I get that it's just making fun and not really serious, but it still rubs me the wrong way.

Daisy is an exceptional player, so is Phillips. It's annoying that (mostly Victorian) commentators and administrators seem to begrudge putting Phillips in the same category, but that's not Daisy's fault. She's been a pioneer of women's footy in general and she should be lauded for it.

You know
The Brownlow was named after an administrator, a pioneer.

Daisy Pearce has been a pioneer and major contribution in the development stages while Erin was playing basketball in America’

Yes, erin’s Better. But how about league b&f being named after daisy while the norm smith equivalent is named after Erin?

That is fair, that said I am a equal opportunity identifier of 5 heads, an expert, as I myself have a 5 head. Certainly more impressive than Daisy Pearce, though she has me squarely beaten with regards to footballing ability.

How influential can you be in a time when no one was watching?

Very strong game from all sections of the playing group.

Mids and forwards continued their dominance, and we fixed the "one forward entry per 10 minutes for one goal" issue with defence.

Not sure wtf Melbourne's game plan was. Seemed to be to have extra numbers at the stoppage, which meant if we won it and pushed it forward, they were outnumbered/outclassed. If we lost it they had extra players in front of them and turned it over.

I was just making the point at the time that Randall hadn't done too much and then in Q3 she poleaxes an oppo player, jumps up, wins the contested ball and kicks long to repel an attack. Huge play. Geez we have stars all over the team.

Yould have to think we have 5 locks in the AA squad with Randall, Phillips, Noffy, Allen and Thompson. I'd also reckon that Hatchard likely too. Varnhagen & Rajic a case for too I reckon. That's a LOT of star power.

Metcalfe, Sedge and Wallace all not playing too. Good bloody team.

Can probably squeeze Jess Foley in there too!

My real issue with Pearce is how 7 are ramming her down our throats. She’s on everything, I find her annoying and it’s not a women thing, there a plenty of male commentators I find annoying too but they don’t seem to be promoted as much.

If anything it should be named after Susan Alberti who did so much work to get the Women's competition up and going if they are going to follow the route in respect to the Brownlow.

And I agree with Commander, for the rest of you - knock it off about Daisy's appearance. It's not her fault that pro-vic media can't get past their natural bias.

I agree mostly what you say, though I feel there are a few misconceptions. Particularly “commentators and administrators seem to begrudge putting Phillips in the same category (as Daisy).” Commentators have repeatedly said things regarding Phillips “she can do it all” and recent comment in the last round “she’s won all accolades in the past, just not the leading goal scorer award, let’s see if she can beat Thompson for that today”.

What’s happening here is that there is a huge discrepancy between footy talent and media exposure regarding Phillips. Compared this with Daisy and there seems an over-exposure to media relative to footy talent. In my opinion, some fans have mistaken this for simply Vic bias, but are not seeing the bigger picture. Granted, I’m no AFLW expert, but I will say I have followed the competition since the first season, and here are my observations regarding Daisy:
- she has been exposed to media limelight very early on, and I get the impression she was heavily involved with the promotion of AFLW back in Victoria.
- she seems comfortable in front of the camera and speaks well, which make the media gravitate around her even more.
- she’s actually a pretty good looking girl, which does no harm for her chances regarding media exposure.
- she actually has a sound understanding of footy and is highly consistent as a player, necessary ingredients for the media to pick your brains.

TLDR: I love Phillips. Daisy is doing a decent job in media and promoting the game.

Have to remember that Daisy is involved ongoing in footy year round, both as a commentator and administrator .....Phillips heads back to America in between seasons

So of course Daisy's profile and opportunities will be greater ......I think it's hard to separate both players, both exceptional

Gotta say ...the jump in skills, game knowledge and game structure this season from Adelaide is unbelievable .......cudos to the AFC and Clarke

It's been stark, that's for sure.

I've got a theory that Clarke decided to take a page from his old coach Craigy's book. In much the same way that effective zoning was able to help us dominate in the mid-2000s, before clubs became skillful enough to beat it, it's been effective in AFLW as well. As much as the comp has evolved already, the skills are still not good enough for players to consistently pinpoint their teammates through our zone, and very few of the players can kick far enough to get over the top of it. Structure up in the right spots, and then pressure the ball carrier and turnovers are inevitable. It helps that we've got arguably the best pressuring engine room in the comp with Marinoff, Phillips, Hatchard and J. Foley.

I think Clarke just likes certain traits in his position groups, but is exceptionally good at finding the right girls with the right traits.

Backs: Reading the ball and overhead marking (probably the unheralded part of our team IMO, think about how many 1 on 1 forward entries we've lost this season?)
Mids: Hard running and tackle pressure (The hardest working midfielders reap the rewards in AFLW)
Forwards: Speed and clean hands on the deck (Balls hit the deck more often then not in forward 50 entries, the simple fact that good marking targets aren't as valuable as elite crumbers right now).

By getting the right girls into the correct parts of the field to utilize their best traits we are constantly exposing the opposition. This model will be copied next year, but I doubt any team will have the cattle to surpass it for a few seasons at least!

It's quite easy to separate both players to be honest. One is clearly the best female in the comp, the other is just a marketing darling they chose to be the face of the comp.

Most people just got sick of the exposure of Daisy. Not her fault, but it's like big head Dangerfield. Sometimes too much of them is to their detriment.

Ergh, Danger is just cringeworthy now. I wonder if he was like that with us and we just couldn't see it.

Daisy is also pretty cringeworthy, but more because even with all the AFL media she's done in the last 3 year, she still sound's like she's not confident enough to be behind the microphone. Some of her AFL boundary rider stuff last year was real real shakey.

When anyone tries to ram something or someone down your throat, it puts people off.

Friday night footy, 7s Game Day, Presentations such as the Brownlow. She’s not a good enough media performer to justify such gigs and is painful to watch.

I agree ....there's a real look of AFL quality about the way we play .....but I've also noticed the kicks appear to have another 10mtrs of length to them

That's a bit ....no, very unfair on Daisy IMO

She's a good player but there's still a big big gap between the two on match impact. Daisy isn't even the next best player in the league, she was selected to be the face of the league no doubt for a variety of reasons - playing ability just being one of them. It makes sense that Phillips is so much more advanced - look at her she's been a professional athlete for a decade or more it's going to take time and preseasons for other women to catch up there's no shame in that.

Daisy is a very good consistent player, but no comparison with Erin on talents alone.
Erin is elite in all facets of marking, tackling, disposals, goals, goal sense etc.
Daisy is not known for her pack marks and nowhere near as good a goal sense as Erin.
