After last night vs. Freo, what are your thoughts?

**** me, posters who keep banging on about selection policy are delusional. If we drop VB, Jenkins etc etc who are we going to REPLACE them with????????????????????? Our lack of quality drops right off after maybe 10 or 15 players. So who are these great players toiling away in the reserves that Phil is being incredibly blind to? Who???! Give me names!!!. We have no *******. Depth and we have holes in our list. Therefore spuds will always be getting games they don't deserve. It's not Phils fault and there's only so much he can do until we get more Draft picks and free agents in.

We didn't always have an injury list this bad; we had options, and we weren't using them.

Repeated use of Lyons as the sub pisses me off.

If this is a development year, which it is, and the primary aim to is to change the culture and instill/demand elite standards, then there will be times when making a statement is more important than the replacement players output. I'd put ROB in - all reports, he's a competitive beast; that's what we need to value. At his age, his output might not match Jenkins (although he'd probably go close), but the intensity at the contest and competitiveness will dwarf Jenkins.

That's the kind of statement and bold decision making is what I want to see.

we had 41 last week.

IIRC - vs Collingwood last year, we had 90 or something like that.
We're not going to play like this every week, obviously. And IIRC, the Collingwood match from last year was one of our better performances, no?

This year our tackle count has been impressive, surely you'd agree?

My main thought is I reckon when we get our supposed gun players back we won't be able to play much better than we did last night.

The effort last night was massive, our young players have shown at the very least glimpses that they have what it takes at this level, and other than Smith the players that are out are not going to add much in terms of kicking efficiency which was our major problem last night.

The "brand" Walsh has them playing, when they play it for 3 quarters or more, is competitive enough to trouble any team in the comp IF we convert our fair share of set shots when the run of play is going our way.
Sloane & b crouch for starters will add plenty!

Having said that we are now playing better as a team rather than relying on individuals.

It's just as inconsistent as previous years.

Some very good weeks and some plain awful weeks and that comes back to the players selected. We need more mentally tough players who turn up every week.

Phil Walsh basically declared our performance last night is what what we plan to do at this wonderful club and onward to Premiership success.

9 Rounds in, what do we think thus far of the season or the club?

We were pretty competitive last night but I'm looking forward to a top 8 draft pick. Need to draft mids this year as our current midfield is too slow/shit at kicking to mix it with the top 6 sides.

Disagree about ROB as the kicks up forward in the NAB game really have affected his play, he still hasn't quite gotten over those. Around the ground he is very good, but up forward he has no confidence. So I'm pleased that he is close to being selected as the majority of his form has warranted it, but there is still that confidence issue in himself and that needs to be taken into account. If he comes in it will be playing up forward and he doesn't want to take responsibility in that area. Do we damage his psyche further by playing him there in the AFL or let him develop and work through it more in the SANFL? It's a fine coaching balance that needs to be considered for his continued development. At the moment I'm okay with him performing well in the SANFL and continuing to put pressure on. Jenkins game last night in the wet was pretty good with some great hard contested work he did. (don't tell feenix67) ;)

This year we average 67.4 tackles per match. Last year we averaged 62.1.

This year we are ranked 9th in average tackles per match. Last year we were ranked 17th.

I agree with your last statement. But we have improved, that's a fact.

I should have checked before I posted! Would have saved me some time. But that definitely shows the improvement. Haven't been ahead of the pack since 2008

We have improved our intent to tackle, not our mental approach towards tackling and that will only change by changing players. Some just don't seem switched on.

Perhaps. I certainly can't argue with your point that some players just aren't good enough, or tough enough. But as a team, we have improved, and that is a good sign. A very, very good sign.

Hate the idea of having a defensive orientated game. Hate seeing 9 goals to 11 goal games.

If that is Phillip Walsh game plan and his direction where he is taking this team, he will need to win a flag within 3 years or it will be Neil "get the **** out of town" Craig time again.
Horses for course though. In wet conditions like that, we played good footy. I suspect in the dry he'd prefer like we played in Round 1.

I say we are a 50/50 chance to make the 8 this season. Should have won last night, no excuses. We'll need to keep this consistency together if we were to play finals this year.

We need 12 or 13 wins

we have...

round 10 vs Carlton (must win) 6
round 12 vs hawks
round 13 vs Brisbane (must win) 7
round 14 vs Geelong (home)
round 15 vs west coast
round 16 vs port power
round 17 vs gold coast (must win) 8
round 18 vs swans
round 19 vs richmond (home)
round 20 vs Essendon
round 21 vs Brisbane (must win) 9
round 22 vs west coast
round 23 vs Geelong

So far, that should give us 9 wins. We MUST find 3 or 4 more wins from the remaining games.

i think we can beat Geelong round 14, Richmond round 19, Essendon round 20.

That would give us 12 wins.

I'd rather the 70 point win from round 1 over and over tbh.

Alright I guess. Nothing terrible, nothing to suggest any great leaps forward though. The Crows are still only one or two unpredictable losses away from 2013/14 all over again.

The test will be who he drops when the big guns come back in. Will it VB and Wright, or the usual scapegoats?

I only got to see glimpses of the game, but I've read up on the reports and the comments here.

We had such a large contingent of our best 22 out, yet we really pushed the undefeated, near-full-strength premiership favourites. We led at some stages and would have won if we kicked straighter. The fact that we didn't get pumped, as we so easily could have under the circumstances, is an achievement.

But it's bittersweet because it could have been an honourable win instead of an honourable loss. And it's a big concern that we haven't beaten a team that finished in the top 4 for an awfully long time. My faith in Phil has been blostered, and it does seem like he has a long-term plan and he knows how to coach when all the cards are stacked against us.

I know right, it's annoying that we haven't beaten any of them since April ;)

Our forward line is starting to work as a cohesive unit .....and likewise the defense

Alex they're one in the same ??

West Coast home is winnable, Port is always a 50.50 game, Hawthorn at home we should be fired up and maybe by the time we have Geelong in the last round their season might be already over
