42 means a minimum of 6 off the list with 3 compulsory draftees.

Trades go on top of that.

My six: Jacobs (fitness/tragic), Wood (needs a change), Garner (fitness?), Hosie, Ahern (needs a change) & Campbell/Daw (sadly)

3 x draftees on to the list: Phillips/Holland, Cox/Reid, Small forward (Durdin?)/Ruck prospect

In the gun for trades: Campbell/Daw, Tyson (fitness?), Durdin & McGuinness (development?), Murphy (probably stiff)

I believe Wood & Ahern would be better served by getting opportunities at other clubs, provided they can get picked up.

The Campbell/Daw scenario rests heavily on whether we pick up a ready to go ruckman.

Gonna tell you right now - there is 0.1% chance of Daw getting cut for mine.

Maybe not, I don't know. They are in my "maybe's".

I suspect we're going to have to keep one of Campbell or Daw, unless we draft and trade ruckmen. I'd favor Maj for his versatility.

That would be the right call. Personally I think we'll be keeping Maj irrespective of any decision about ruck backup.

I don't think he's a bullet proof as some think.

He's 30 next year, has his limitations, and has missed a lot of footy after finally coming good.

They lost in 2016, won in 2018. Depends on if you include trades and if you just mean the team on the grand final or include those in the squad who weren't available due to injury/suspension.

Kennedy went #4 in 2005, was part of the Judd trade.
Masten went #3 in 2007
Gaff went #4 in 2010
Naitanui #2 in 2008

Sheppard went #7 and they also got end of first round priority picks in Shuey (norm smith medalist) and Darling which we are never going to get.

They traded in guys like Redden, Yeo, Kennedy, Cripps, Vardy, Jetta
Got good value from their first round picks: Sheed #11, Hurn #13, Duggan #11, Venables #13. They had a few bolters like McGovern and Lecras but overall they had a side with a lot of top end talent. They had an uncanny ability to go from premiership contender to bottom 4 for a number of years before winning.
Agree totally with the bottom 4 thing.
The systems a lot easier to work if You’re not scraping to finish Mid table and that pesky survival stuff to worry about

I don't think Daw is going anywhere. As much as I hate to say it, the perception of the club if we chose to do that would not be great.

Perceptions don't win flags, but they do affect membership.

Also Daw's performance in the small sample he has played actually looks pretty good. There are plenty to gut first. Most of the ones we should gut are in the 100+ gamers range...

That's shorter than I expect although I guess I could see it with drafting from lower levels allowed. I'd prefer slightly more though. To be honest though I'm one of several that think a cut like that with our current list actually benefits us massively. We have several players with chronic long term unavailability through injury and a raft of players out of contract - this kind of list cull could benefit us massively in a year with a decent draft hand. We can draft for the future to shore up our core age group and arguably pick up some freebies that fit a direct need still in that core 22-26 age group. All this with plenty of cash available in player payments. Rawlings has an opportunity this year that is completely one out of the box to set us up for the next decade.

36 is the talk among the players, but had they been told we'd all know I suppose. I do agree we've plenty to move on, so wouldn't be that difficult to manage.

Garner, Jacobs, Campbell, Hall, Ahern, Williams, Pittard, Murphy McGuinness , Hosie, Tyson, Durdin, Crocker, Wood, am sure that's the lot that could be in trouble. Some through injury, some application and talent of course.

Tyson is contracted but I believe he will retire at season's end, he wouldn't take the spot of someone else for contracts sake. Hope we keep him in an off field roll should he indeed retire.

36 does seem a tad too much, and I just read on here that it may well be staged, that makes sense. As it sits there may well be over 100 footballers delisted. will they qualify for job keeper?

We have to hold on to them for Job Keeper to apply. It's Job Seeker for this lot.

Don’t know if I necessarily agree with Marc - Brady said explicitly we need to add more talent and emphasised the importance of the draft. Which is really positive from my perspective.

Are we going to trade away every senior player? No, but I don’t think anyone expected us to.

Why? I doubt it will see Jacobs re-contracted and he has an actual onfield injury.

The emotional aspect that people selectively apply to Majak is ridiculous. Maj should be delisted or contracted on football value, just like every other player on the list.

Thought I would have a crack at what I think our list strategy should look like at years end. Clearly a few things to play out, specifically performances of those OOC as well as what happens with Polly.

Worked on assumption that we would be turning over around 10 players max - also chucked in what I thought we should be looking at with contract extensions for those I think have earned it.

Bring on the criticism

I commend you for having a crack, but would disagree with Crocker & your trades.

I also reckon Marley is currently doing enough to be retained.

I was unsure about Marley as well, I started by trying to work out top 10 to be delisted/traded assuming we are working hard to get the right players to the club.

Was stuck with the trades as I don't think Tyson or Campbell have offered enough to stay on the list yet are both contracted for next year.

Will surely be a headache for the club at years end.

Can't see any other club interested in a player with chronic soft tissue injuries (Tyson) and probably wouldn't trade for a depth ruckman like Campbell.

Atley and JMac I can see being put on the table for trade.

Out of the players you have retained I would say Murphy and Hosie are being looked at and would both be 50/50 at best at this stage. Williams and Ahern probably similar current status to those as well.

Tom & Dom will come down to trades, I agree, but I reckon they will probably be safe.

Tyson in particular is still contracted and hasn't had a chance to show anything, so unless there is some red hot trade action, I reckon he'll stay.

I truly hate this recurring "so we can challenge the better teams" comment - it was consistent through the Scott era.

Be the best team don't just aspire to challenge the better ones ffs.

I just hate the terminology.

Realistically this year I'd have been happy with 4 - 8 and win a few finals. I think that was where our best side was at before everything went crazy injury and COVID wise. Capable of being better but also not at its peak.

It's not magic. It's a steady improvement based on the reasons I set out in the post above. Steady improvements in list quality and coaching.

This year it's been shown we aren't just reliant on guys over 30. We needed Cunnington, Larkey and Brown available but we have seen the improvement in Jy, now LDU, Taylor, even tho he is raw. Kyron Hayden. Even Bonar and Mahoney.

Anderson has really stepped up as tho he has more room to improve as well. Froggy is playing unreal footy. LMac and BMac too. Without COVID Daw plays from round one. A coach giving some of these young guys opportunity and setting standards ... We were due to improve and we need to examine why we didn't.

Injuries exposed structural weaknesses IMO. Our depth is our problem. And some of our older players have been an issue.

Wrong.

Wrong.

Wrong.

I said fourth to eighth ie the bottom half of the eight this year. We are four games from that and lost five games by under two and a half goals while our forward structure was borked due to Larkey and Daw not playing and giving us an extra target to chop out Brown.

While missing Ben Cunnington.

We lost nine games without him and our win record with him is 50%. So him not injured makes us at least four games better a side.

Brown and Larkey have a ten nine win loss ratio when playing together since Larkey won the Frosty MillerMedal, it's even better since the announcement of Scott being sacked. But let's go with that first one. They have an approximately fifty fifty win loss ratio when they have played together higher since Shaw. This season it's exactly that for the two games the played. We are two and eight from the games they didn't play together.

We are also missing the likes of Thomas, Taylor, Ziebell (10 brownlow vites last year when reasonably fit), Turner who you probably don't rate but holds our defensive forward structure together. Others. But they don't have a demonstratable structural role with figures available to back up its importance.

Incorrect.

You should rewatch tonight’s game if you still disagree.
