AFL Club
North Melbourne
Hypothetical.

You have the best coach the game has seen in decades free on the market, with 4 flags in 7 years. He wants to return to coaching in 2023. He played most of his career at your club.

You have had a coach for 2 seasons but see no large improvement since about round 17 of the previous year. He is a nice bloke but questions arise on if he has the ability to inspire the players and set a standard that will lead them to the next step of becoming a power side.

Do you approach Alistair or not?

I would've been getting a handle on his plans even before the Brisbane game.

It's a cold nasty world out there. You look at all options.

If North are not talking to him then there is something wrong.

I don't even like him but the players need somebody they can believe if they're going to bust their gutses. Right now they look like they're stuffed by midway through each quarter and the vast majority do not have the skills to be playing at AFL level.

As much as Noble is a nice guy he just can’t coach. The message isn’t getting through to the players. Great footy administrator, crap coach.
Offer him a job as a GM.
Time is now - Get Clarkson, best coach of the modern era. Played most of his career at the club. The players will walk taller with him in charge plus he will make us relevant again.
He will also lure players from other clubs.
Plan B if that fails. Approach Buckley again. He can coach and is chasing a flag. Simple!
Priority pick - if we don’t beg the AFL for one we have no spine. We are just not competitive and that’s the reason that they are handed out.
Will also help given our lack of early picks next year.
Pick 1 is already ours, no chance that we don’t collect the spoon again.

I am betting that Clarkson has spoken to a ton of players to sound out who would make a move if he was to be coaching again in 2023. He would potentially be able to land some hand-picked players from his portfolio of those who've said they's do it. Somehow.

Sicily would be one.
If we are able to lure him as coach and he brings Sicily with him I’d be happy with that.

OK, lots of hypotheticals here. Permit me an old fart's perspective, for what it is worth. Take it or leave it, I don't mind. Timing is everything...no way Barassi after leaving Carlton in 1971 ( some parallel with Clarko situation now) would have coached North in 1972. Brian Dixon had the poisoned chalice for 1971 and 1972. But for 1973...Davis, Wade, Rantall, all signed, plus Schimma; Greig and Dench already showing much, much promise. Blight signed for 1974 along with a returning player called Cable. Not a bad nucleus. Barassi is in. Timing is everything!

By the way, Brian Dixon does not get enough credit for the development of Greig, Dench, Cowton, Feltham, Henshaw, Gumbleton in those terrible years of the early 70s. Now where have we heard those names before?

IIRC last time he wasn't interested not because it was us, but because he always wanted to have the year off.

I think he was annoyed with Hawthorn as he had an offer from us on the table then they go and shaft him.
Why wouldn’t he want to coach us?
Ex player, young promising list, stays in Melbourne and would be confident of bringing in players to fill our list deficiencies.

Started his playing career with us, could end his coaching career with us, i think we'd be mad if we aren't in talks at the very least. I don't think Noble will cut it.
