Sorry guys typo. I meant to say Smith speaks to refs far LESS then other captains. Have corrected now. It's what happens when you try to do 4 things at once

Well that makes more sense...:)

Players are coached to drop their head when they feel they are going past the horizontal so if they land on their head momentum will roll them over. So when McLean lifted his leg (if you look it barely goes past the horizontal) McKinnon obviously thought he was going to land head first and dropped his head. McLean appears to reduce his influence in the tackle and McKinnon instead is grounded as per a normal tackle, only his head is in an awkward position and with the weight of the other two tacklers we see the terrible result.

To me this is a one in a million freak accident where nobody appears to do anything wrong, but the outcome turns out be one of the most horrific incidents on an NRL field in recent memory.

As with everyone here, my thoughts also go to Alex McKinnon and his family, and I hope makes a complete recovery.

Clearly the NRL isn't too concerned for player welfare despite this incident. James Graham will have no recollection whatsoever of his visit to Perth after tonight. He was clearly concussed and yet he came back on a couple of times, only to be left wandering the field aimlessly and dragged off yet again after another knock.

Has nothing to do with the NRL, it's up to the bulldogs doctor.

If he shouldn't have come back on and the NRL agree then they will find the Bulldogs.

If the NRL were sufficiently squared away they'd be preventing these things, not reacting to them. Graham looked like shit, it was plainly obvious to spectators that he was not aware of what was going on after his big knock early in the game.

There are rules in place to prevent these things, if Graham went back on the field it's entirely the Bulldogs fault.

Maybe you should do some research before blaming the NRL.

Just heard he is in a very bad way and may never walk again..devastating news, thoughts are with him and everyone who loves him. I must say though sometimes these diagnosis come a bit fast and are worst case scenarios..hopefully with work and determination he will walk again, he's young and fit so there is always hope. God Speed to him.

They haven't ruled out walking again

"may never walk again"

when there's hope!
Exactly, doctors said the same thing about my mother years ago but she was walking within 12 months. The doctors are obliged to tell the family worst case scenarios and I certainly don't trust the salivating media not to go overboard and report it as a certainty straight up. As long as he has hope and heart and support then he has a chance

That's bloody sad news poor bloke :( I just watched the tackle, horrible.

Don't know much about league but how is it allowed that three players can pole drive someone like that?

Three players didn't, actually no players did.

The tackle became awkward and McKinnon ducked his head. It was just a terrible accident with zero malice.

the crazy thing is it wasn't anywhere NEAR the worst spear tackle i've seen.
But WHY did they need to lift him past horizontal anyway ??

Just ban the lift....may as well , already banned the shoulder charge

Wow-wee, that is devastating. Thoughts go out to Alex and his family. Such an innocent, innocuous action. A timely reminder on how precious and fragile life can be.

so it's not confirmed by Family or club ? saw this as well

has only limited feeling in his left arm

McKinnon and his family have been told he is a quadriplegic,” the report stated.
“He is in rehab and care and will hopefully recover. His spinal cord is not severed.

it's only a small positive minute nearly but I have read up on people walking again (wooshette's mother being one of them) and the fact he has "some" feeling in a limb has got to be a start.

Horrible situation. If he is permanently quadriplegic then I hope the club and the NRL support him long term. i.e. the rest of his life. Hopefully he can be one of the lucky ones who does regain function.

I think you're being a little blase. He was lifted up past the horizontal and driven to the ground, which is why he ducked his head. He wouldn't have ducked his head otherwise. So I don't know if accident is the right word. We see similar tackles every week without problem...but maybe we shouldn't.

Didn't they say this morning it will be another few weeks before the swelling comes down so they diagnose the outcome. Why all of the sudden is this news out so quick with no Statement from the club or family ?
