Was having a look through the Greatest Test XI thread on the main board and was thinking about each of the State sides and what their all time teams would be, threw one together for Tasmania -

Michael Di Venuto
David Boon
Ricky Ponting*
Jamie Cox
George Bailey
Dan Marsh
Shaun Young
Richard Wooley+
Brett Geeves
Ben Hilfenhaus
Colin Miller

Dene Hills, Luke Butterworth and Greg Campbell all unlucky not be squeezed in, a pretty decent batting side, but the bowling is probably workman-like at best, would most likely be punching above their weight in comparison to the other states. Tried not to include any international players like Alan Knott, or blokes that only played one or two seasons like Watson and Lillee. Can anybody do another State XI?

Geez . . . that is hard. :)

Queensland

Matthew Hayden
Bill Brown
Martin Love
Stuart Law
Peter Burge
Allan Border
Trevor Hohns
Ian Healy
Andy Bichel
Michael Kasprowicz
Jeff Thomson
Geoff Dymock

Tried to have an allrounder and a left arm quick, and think AB might be batting a bit low.

Left out a fair swag of very good players: Greg Chappell, Sam Trimble, Jimmy Maher, Kepler Wessels, Rob Kerr (all bats), Ken Mackay, Ron Archer, Andrew Symonds, James Hopes (allrounders), Dirk Tazelaar, Carl Rackemann, Craig McDermott, Ray Lindwall (quicks), Col McCool, (spinners), and about five 'keepers (Grout, Tallon, Seccombe, Maclean, Hartley).

Going on total runs/wkts you might have something like:
(spot in brackets indicates number on all-time Qld stats list)

Matthew Hayden (5, 8831)
Sam Trimble (4, 9465)
Martin Love (1, 11,224)
Stuart Law (3, 9920)
Allan Border (6, 7661)
Jimmy Maher (2, 9933)
Ken Mackay (10, 6875)
Wade Seccombe (1, 519 dismissals)
Andy Bichel (2, 463 wkts)
Michael Kasprowicz (1, 505 wkts)
Carl Rackemann (3, 425)
Trevor Hohns (in top 20, 188 SS wkts)

and on batting/bowling averages:
Hayden (54.85)
Brown (53.08)
Love (46.00
Chappell (68)
Border (57.17)
Burge (56.08)
Mackay (46.14)
Leo O'Connor wk, (40.06)
Bichel (23.24)
Thomson (24.17)
Adam Dale (202 wkts @ 21.76)
Ryan Harris (23.32)

Good exercise - now what was I doing again . . .

A pretty good effort with this XI however I would have another quick instead of Ian Johnson. I'm not sure who, whether it would be Max Walker, Alan Connolly, Merv Hughes (or some pre WWII ones whose names escape me at the moment).

Max Walker is Taswegian by birth.

Merv Hughes went pretty close.

And with Miller and Armstrong in the side there could be an argument to replace Johnson with Ryder and to move Miller and Armstrong down the batting order

I might sneak Spofforth into NSW - ahead of Lindwall. Monty Noble for Richie Benaud? Maybe - not this week, though:p.

For Victoria - Hughie Trumble ahead of Ian Johnson for the Off-Spinner, Billy Murdoch in place of Armstrong.

And Joe Darling onto the SA side - probably as opener. Possibly as Captain. And, sorry, Ryan Harris is a NSW-man. Does Clarrie Grimmett miss out because he's a kiwi?

I thought the same until I was correct in another thread but he grew up in Adelaide.

Grimmett misses because he is a Kiwi.

Is Richard Woolley related to Roger Woolley by any chance?

:)
