Why would you even put any of those other players in with Michael Voss? They haven't had anywhere near the success that he's had, thus making his career the best. Doesn't matter that some of those players are/were equally as good, they've just never had the same success...

You're asking two different questions.

1. Who has had the better career?

Obviously Voss

2. Who has been the better player?

Hird by a whisker from Voss and Buckley

Agree on that analysis alone. While Voss has had more success, one player doesn't make an entire premiership team.

Hird is just magical if he didn't have his injury worries there would be no argument as to the best player on the poll.

Personally for me i would rank them
Voss (3 flags as captain, 1 brownlow)
Hird (2 flags, one of which as captain, Brownlow and a norm smith)
Harvey (2 Brownlows)
Buckley (1 Brownlow, 1 norm smith)
West (no major honours outside of a club champion award unfortunatley)

Jimmy Hird has had an injury riddled career but just keeps getting back up and has reaped the rewards of determination.
He even says himself that he doesn't have the talent of guys like Voss or Ablett Snr. but through hard work he has become a great player.

Sure Voss has captain 3 premiership but you can't forget that his team was bloody good.

Hirdy has stood up when it matters, whether its a Grand final, an ANZAC Day match or a must-win.

For me:
1. Hird - as above.
2. Voss - 3 time premiership captain and Brownlow, you gotta be good to do that.
3. Buckley - Been a gun player for a team who has had little success.
4. Harvey - Not many players have been a back-to-back Brownlow medalist.
5. West - Very good player, and the B&F's show it, but just not up there.

If you asked this question to all 5 players they would all say Voss. Players play for premierships and Voss got to captain 3 and play in a losing GF. not to mention a truck load of finals

how many premierships did martin pike win??

how many finals did bobby skilton play in??

one is considered one of the best players going around, the other was simply a good ordinary player

premierships dont determine how good a player is

Voss by the length of the Flemington straight on all accounts. Voss also suffered the worst injury of all with the broken leg he suffered at Subiaco.

1. Hird
2. Voss
3. Buckley

GAP

4. Harvey
5. West

I think people forget that Voss has two AFLPA MVP's [Leigh Matthew'a Award]

Hird Doesn't have, neither do Buckley or West although Harvey has on

Therefore IMO it's

1: Voss [by a bit as well]
2: Hird
3: Buckley/Harvey - One has 7 x AA the other 8 x AA
5: West, and a fair bit behind this group

Riciutto should have West's spot in this poll 8 x AA [twice captain], Brownlow Medalist, Premiership Player

Cousins could also be in this poll, although he's 4-5 years younger than these guys

how about All Australian's and B and F's?
