AMD Athlon XP vs Intel Pentium

The common theory is that AMDs chips run faster at the same clockspeed at better prices, but run hotter. I myself own a PC with an Athlon 1.2Ghz chip (back when they were THE top-line model! I think I paid close to $500 for the chip alone..) Having said that, I don't think it would bother me if I had to use an intel machine - they do much the same job in the end.

Of course, my current favourite CPU has to be IBM's PPC970 chip, as found in the new PowerMac G5s ;)

I just bought a Athlon 2600+ over a P4 2.67 Gig and saved myself $400.

Runs like a dream so far :)

I currently have an Athlon 1200 and an XP1800, both of which are mighty fine computers. What is worth noting is that an Athlon 2600 does not run at 2.6Ghz - its actually a 2.13Ghz CPU. This is probably because, as Des said, at the same processor speed an Athlon way outperforms a Pentium IV, but if AMD just advertised the speed of their processors (ie an Athlon 2600 as a 2.1Ghz Athlon), they'd probably lose market share as the Pentium IV 2.6Ghz _sounds_ faster to the uneducated.

A bit of a generalisation, but AMD processors are usually cheaper and run hotter than Intel, so usually require better/noiser cooling.
AMD is generally the weapon of choice for those that like to tinker with their PC's to get every MHz out of them. Intel CPU's are more idiot proof.
The speed debate is a whole other issue that could end up making this the longest thread on Bigfooty.

I realise that dude, but overclock is a beautiful thing :)

I've got a Athlon XP 1700, which runs at 1.43ghz.

Of course pumping the **** out of it's a laugh, as is doing it do the video card.

Anyway, overclocking is fine, but sooner or later you'll start getting errors and blue screens.

This is probably the best overclock I've heard of: http://totl.net/Eunuch/

Have you hooked up your PC to your Air-Conditioner?

I've got two Volcano fans hooked up to cool the CPU

Never gets more than 40 degree c which is less than the AMD 1000 I had years ago which averaged 42-44c unclocked

That is sensational.

I operate my computer upstairs...in summer...when the A/C is downstairs...pushes all heat up. We recorded temperature up here at 48c.

Is it safe to even consider operating my CPU in those temperatures, let alone overclocking?

Anything under 45 is considered safe
45-55 borderline
55+ frying time

I was told that one is a ferrari and the other is a truck. The ferrari goes fast but slows with more proccesses. The truck is average speed but will continue the same speed with more proccesses... blah. I know nothing.
