Man it sh*ts me when Australian's say the month before the day.

It's the 24th of December, NOT December 24!!!

Even newsreaders are saying it now which is pathetic. Where did they get their education from? And it's Americanisation not Americanization.

Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone. :D

Deal with it.

Save your hate for people who refer to lollies as 'candy' and the little ****ers who go around trick or treating.

Afraid it is happening- ten years ago when I came to Australia, there were limited bits with kids wearing baseball and basketball gear, but from what I witnessed, the connection grows. Blame it on the INTERNET and the fact there is no one to challenge the US in any real sense. Give china few more years in developing and you'll see a major rival- I reckon we (the US) will be in trouble then because we won't understand China's customs- but they DO understand ours.

As for Australian TV, by early 1996, I had dubbed 7, 9 and 10 the American clones. Sad, but true- you get all the garbage on our TV- the chat shows, the reality programmes etc. I made a pledge this year when i moved to a new job- no television. 4 months later, I'm not missing it.

I like the Brit/Aussie custom of putting day/month/year and spelling bits with -ise and -our....of course, I'm in a minority in this country.

I don't like it when they drop the 'and' from numbers. Like I would say, Four hundred and seven, and they would say Four hundred seven. Dunno why, but it bothers me.

I'm off to drive my SUV.

A few years ago Australian children nominated Michael Jordan as their sports idol. Thats right, not Dawn Fraser, not Herb Elliot, not Walter Lindrum, not Hubert Opperman. This is where the rot set in.

As for the order of dates? I'll have ketchup on mine.

Back in the early 90s, it was widely thought that basketball would offer a serious threat to the major football codes in Australia. It seemed to be the "in" thing with kids at school, and basketball cards were all the rage among school kids when I started high school. These days some people could be using the same argument for soccer and rugby union.

Actually the changes in legislation related to the local television and film industry would have made more of an impact... it is a dying industry in Australia (thus Australian culture is not well represented in film and tv), and it's only gonna get worse with the free trade agreement.

I could care less aboot Americanization.

Afraid so- over 25 years ago, I went to uni in Canada, and they were really isolated- one US television station, very little American content on Canada's television. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there- now it is a wasteland of American programming, sorry, porogrammeing- there are a few bits that still make Canada different, but the closeness made the innundation come quickly.

When I came to Oz in late '94, I was pleased to see how little America had touched the country- probably strongest in sydney, but it was a small issue then. Watching the television channels, though, I saw the change- and now with INTERNET as strong as it is, plus sattelite and cable TV, you get everything you want from all around the globe (except for decent cricket coverage here in the USA, dammit....). And the US is the dominant power- not saying that with any sense of superiority, just stating the facts as they are- and therefore our culture is being disseminated very quickly.

The sad part is, most folks here have no clue about it, nor are they particularly interested. If it doesn't happen within 5-10 miles of them, or is not a sensational story, it doesn't matter.
