Overseas markets are currently quoting 5/1 on Emma Snowsill winning the Olympic triathlon race. It is fair to say that I have a pretty fair idea about both the punt and the sport of triathlon. I have never, in two decades, never seen more glaring overs - she ought to be odds on.

Get on board and hope she doesn't get hit by a bus in the next fortnight.

Doesn't look like SB have a market for it; will they put one up as the event gets closer?

What about Vanessa Fernandes?

Out of form. Emma has the edge over her in big races anyway. The reason Fernandes is so short (7/4) is that she wins a lot of Mickey Mouse races in Europe, where all these markets are framed.

Emma Snowsill: Diminutive but full of heart

Emma Snowsill... a genuine gold medal chance for Australia in Beijing. (Reuters: Andy Clark)

Audio: Triathlon Interview: Emma Snowsill (News Audio) Standing at only 161 cm and weighing in at a slender 48 kilograms, it is hard to imagine that Emma Snowsill will be competing in one of the most gruelling and challenging events at the Olympic Games.

The three-time world champion and 2006 Commonwealth gold medallist triathlete is considered a genuine winning chance in Beijiing but has a pair of obstacles in her path.

While Snowsill tussles in the water, battles on the bike and pounds the road, in the back of her mind will be the fact that not once in triathlon's short history since 2000 has a pre-race favourite triumphed.

If she overcomes that hurdle, another one stands in her way in the form of long-time adversary Vanessa Fernandes, backed as the hottest shot for the gold along with Snowsill.

But Snowsill says the Olympics will be far from a two-horse race between her and the 2007 World Champion.

"I think if I approach the race in that way, I'd be upset at the end of the day," she said in an interview supplied to the ABC after claiming victory at a recent World Cup event in Des Moines, Iowa.

"Obviously it gets talked about and I think we are probably the two that think least about it.

"We know history speaks for itself and a favourite has never won the Olympic Games.

"That's in the back of our minds and we're going to be watching the other 48 girls on the start line and Vanessa.

"Neither of want to ever let our guard down."

Snowsill will also have bad memories of her last visit to China, where she suffered a stomach bug after swallowing water at the Olympic test event in September last year.

But in typical fighting spirit, the 27-year-old is confident she can now thrive in the testing conditions.

"In Beijing it's always going to be a different story - it's hot it's humid for me I'm happy about that I'm looking forward to that," Snowsill says.

Her recent performances suggest she is well and truly primed for a shot at Olympic gold after placing first in her last five races from the Noosa Triathalon in November to her latest victory in the US Series in Minneaopolis in mid-July.

She has also been charged with the responsibility of leading 23-year-olds Emma Moffat and Erin Densham, the next generation of Australian female triathletes.

But with a record like Snowsill's, there is surely no better candidate to lead Australia's new contingent to the finish line and many will be hoping she leads from the front.

Put 300 on her at 5.00. Insane odds. Sure there are 50 people in the sport but it doesnt mean they can actually win. It was always a 2 horse race between Snowsill and Fernandes. Snowsill should of really been 1.80.

One of my mates hammered this. About 10k on it. He does triathlons and has competed at the same events Emma has in the past. Hes a happy chappy atm im sure.

Fine tipping JG,best price available today anywhere was 3.5.

It got smashed badly by the sounds of it. My mate had 10k on it and the guy he placed the bet with had 2 other guys bet 8 and 5k respectively so a few people knew what was gonna happen. She won so easily too which makes it even more satisfying :D

Got the Snowsill/Gomez quad happening. Get on Gomez. $2.65 still good odds for a guy who's been unbeatable for 24 months.

I don't want to sound doubtful but which bookie did he have it with.

A 1K bet on a sport like triathlon would have raised suspicions with any of the Oz guys, let alone 23K.

The Oz sports bookies just aren't that big despite what they might say about themselves in the paper.......
