Mick McGuane was there, larger than life. McGuire chipped him about the three forgettable games he played for Carlton at the end of his career, to which McGuane replied: "You taught me the Broady way. You said, 'Go and rob them'. I did: 70 grand a game!":D

"I won one Copeland," he said. "I was a superstar — and I won one!" des

i'm assuming he meant he was on a 210k per year contract and ended up only playing 3 games, so in hindsight it was as if he robbed them...the only way you could be happy for a collingwood great to play for carlton was if carlton got the raw deal :)

ahhh ok, he played for carlton. i was unaware of that!

Love this part;

"COLLINGWOOD legend Tony Shaw was on stage early this week with club president Eddie McGuire, remembering what constituted a recovery session when he first played. "Sunday morning, Crown lagers in the spa, fish and chips at lunchtime, then we all drove home pissed at four," he said. "Things have changed, Ed." McGuire, thinking of recent adverse publicity, rejoined ruefully: "Maybe they haven't."

Hehe, shows even Eddie can laugh about some of the misdemeanors we have had over the past few years.

Would have been a great night, everyone from Picken through to Carmen, Daicos through to Price, and yet we still had no players in the AFL team of the 1/2 century (was only 1 player pre world war 2 in it).

Collingwood should have considered having a cavelcade of these start around the ground, but I guess it isnt our home game this week which is a pity.

True to his better instincts Mick hated the bastards and even got in a punch up with a Carlton player.

It was almost as if he wanted to "give it to em'" one more time before he retired.:thumbsu:

if only daisy could learn to deliver as truly after a searching run!!!!

this is the only memory i have of mick and carlton :D

It is a lot harder to do than it looks...
In around 88/89 I had a massive 5 bouncer down the wing from the kick in and straightened beautifully as I crossed the fifty, steadied and kicked a worm burner about 5 meters:eek:....A big run with pursuers takes a hell of a lot out of you.
Took me a good 3-4 minutes to recover and I had a pretty big tank.

I attended the Collingwood past players function tonight which was a salute to all living Copeland Trophy winners who apart from Mark Williams and Neil Mann who was sick, Sav Rocca in the USA and the current players who are on the wagon, all such winners were in attendance.

This was a "Heart of Collingwood" function which is a fundraiser for past players who don't have sufficient funds for medical attention they need or are under some financial hardship.

It was a great night and most of the players spoke on stage. Tuddy was his usual modest self saying he doesn't know if The Weed was tougher but that Tuddy was an absolute superstar!

I spoke with amongst others. Peter Moore, Jeff Clifton, Trevor Steer, Wally Lovett, Billy Picken, Terry Waters, Barry Price and Robert Hyde.

I also had photos taken with them.

One of the better functions I have attended and seeing other player like Carman, Ian Graham, Tony Francis, Mark Weideman, Andrew Smith and others was really great.

Recommend others who have the capacity to support these functions to actually support the past players with something concrete.

The other thing about these sorts of functions is accessibility to the players. With a smaller crowd things are a lot less rushed and there is not as much competition to speak with people as say on Copeland Trophy night.

If anyone ever bumps into Wally Lovett who only played a handful of games before being part of the Geoff Raines trade to Richmond, have a chat with him. He is a delightful guy to talk to. One of our first Aboriginal players.

Former world swimming champion Tracey Wickham was also there. She is a Collingwood supporter and this was the first function she had attended since her daughter died of cancer about two years ago.

I didnt realise how tiny she was, but she has a big personality and made sure everyone knew she barracked for Collingwood and was born in Rosebud!

She said her daughter was close friends with the Cloke family esp Cameron Cloke when he was with the Pies.

It was a ripper night. The only thing that left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth was when Phil Carman spoke.

He suggested the club didnt handle him properly and that he would have won us a couple of flags if he hadn't of been traded at the end of 1978.

No mention of 1977 and how he cost us the flag.

I was going to talk to him and get his photo, but after that little attempt to re-write history, I felt let down by one of the players I loved to watch play.

Leaving him to one side, everything else was fantastic.
