My Dad wasn't happy...HAHA!! Sucked in Johnnie, absolutely thrashed by Big Kim. Frodo, I want you on here to explain why your man performed so poorly last night!! :D

Howard scored some early points on the terrorism issue, making sure he threw in his favourite word 'mateship'. However he spent far too much of the night on the back foot defending himself. In the lead-up to the campaign he has been criticising Labor for its lack of policies (with justification I thought) yet last night it came across as though the Coalition were the ones who were campaigning with smoke and mirrors.

Howard was content to use the line 'you need me in this challenging time' but didn't have much to back it up, where as Beazley was impressive in regards to education and other policies - his final statement on the GST was very well said.

The big turning point was when Howard said:
The best thing we have ever done for education in Australia is introduce the GST

The worm literally fell off the screen! Was a stupid statement and as soon as he said it I thought he was in trouble. Best thing ever??? Try telling that to a uni student who has to pay GST on all books, materials, student union fees, travel etc.

Howard didn't press Beazley enough on workplace relations and the GST roll-back, and his description of Peter Reith as courageous was not a great idea. He was also very evasive, refusing to commit to the full term, something Kim seized upon and his refusal to take Beazley on in a 2nd debate may hurt him.

All in all a poor performance by the PM, no wonder he wanted the debate so early in the campaign. Beazley must have been delighted things turned out so well, but he did seem to be slightly aided by Ray, who didn't help Howard's cause.

But Beazley was the clear winner, and this election may be a lot closer than it looked a week ago.

nice wrap Goalden - pretty much how I saw it too.

Was pleasantly surprised to see the worm go up into the 'positive' zone when Beazley was clarifying the position regarding the ALPs opposition to the original Border Protection Bill. Just goes to show the electorate (that is, us) is always willing to listen if a politician takes the time to explain and clarify their position on any given issue.

Was a defining moment for Beazley I think - for once he put the waffle and bluster aside and actually had the balls and the gumption to say something with force and clarity.

Beazley is usually a shocking waffler - not last night though !

He did well, and Howard by comparision looked tired, tetchy and a bit defensive.

Not a good performance from somebody with such a shrewd political mind.

cheers

Agree with you there BSA - Howard would have thought he was onto a winner there as his handling of the boat people has been good and very popular, yet Beazley seemed to come out on top in what was probably the only real moment where both sides fired up.

I frankly don't know why I continue to watch these "debates".

They always degenerate into a "who can p i s s higher up the wall" contest, and last night was no exception. Whatsmore, they have very little impact on the outcome of the election.

I am a sucker for punishment!!!

I would say however, that I was suprised at how poor Howard peformed. I don't like the way he speaks, but he usually gets his point across fairly effectively. He kills Beazley when they "debate" in the parliament.

Its because in parliament the Government uses it s numbers to set the agenda and gag debate on issues it doesnt want to discuss ..... John Howard is a man who has finished his agenda, has no new policies going forward as he is set to retire and is hoping noone cottons on that issues at Home are just as important as issues abroad ...... traditionally i think you are right the debates dont serve much importance, but traditionally the debates are alot closer and no clear winner could be found, last night Beaza wa A CLEAR WINNER, also this election campaign is different in that domestic issues have been cleverly pushed aside by Howard and his Murdoch press mates, the debate allowed Beaza to bring some attention back to Health, education aged care etc in which Johnny hasnt a policy except the GST will fix everything.lol

No Bubba, Howard beating Beazley in Parliament has got nothing to do with the government gagging debate or employing other procedural mechanisms to deny Kim the chance to argue.

Howard simply gets his point across far more effectively, whilst Mr Beazley waffles (as BSA termed it).

I should know, I work there!!

Its amazing how quickly the cats bum appears on Howards face when things arent going his way. He might learn now that leadership is not just about temper tantums and sheer bloody mindedness, and that government is more than keeping sec rets from people.

I love the way that he accuses the ALP of having no agenda for government and he cant even tell us whether or not he is going to stick around for the full term. No vision, no policies, no longer in government.

Beazley wiped the floor with him. Goodbye Johnny you wont be missed. Oh and take your little mate Abbott with you wherever you go.

P.S. Where is this ticker you are always going on about? Instead of picking up your bat and ball and going home, why dont you debate Beazley again?

While Beazley does tend to waffle sometimes there is no denying that the Howard government (like other govts) does use standing orders to supress debate. This is the most secretive and underhand government we have ever had. Just try and get any unfavorable information under FOI.

OK Comiss, we will have to agree to disagree on that, i believe Kims 'waffling' is overstated btw, and dont forget for all of Johnnys so called beatings of Kim in parliament his Government was very much on the nose before the Tampa incident ....... interesting fact from the debate in the last 10 years Australia has recieved 13,000 illegals on boats, 2000 under the labour gov .... 11,000 under Howards stewardship ............. hmmmmmmm

Beazley's spin doctors and media advisers should take a bow!

They obviously knew they had to turn the tables on the refugee stand and Kim played it beautifully putting Howard on the spot with the Labor requested amendments to the Border Protection Bill.

Beazley was articulate, confident & believable. Gone was the normal waffle and beating around the bush. Instead it was Howard who looked like he was on the defensive.
In fact Johnny knew he was beaten on the night & that is the reason why he declined another debate.

Although Kim didn't have to work that hard. Howard shot himself in the foot a couple of times. Especially when he mentioned the GST! Geez, did that old worm take a dive then!
Me thinks we won't hear any mention of the GST from the Libs for the rest of this campaign. But I bet Beazleys advisers have other ideas for the him and the Labor party.

I think Frodo is out of town at the moment, although if anyone taped it last night, I'm sure he'd love to see it :D

To me John Howard came across as a bit tired, weak and not with it. I also want to know why he kept bobbing his hand up and down to the side, he looked as if he was playing with a yoyo. On the other hand Kim Beazley seemed more stronger and forceful in the messages. It was hilarious that when Beazley brought up the GST issue with it ruining small business and affecting uni-students the worm went right up in his popularity.

Asking 80 people, most of whom looked like they had been asked in from King's Cross is hardly a reflection of a nation.
For one thing,I got sick of Beazley and his bloody hands moving all the time.

I take it you've never actually been to Kings Cross have you dees01 ?

otherwise you wouldn't have come out with such a silly comment ...

That studio audience looked dead-set average joe from the suburbs to me !

cheers

I certainly have BSA which is why I said it. ( I was exagerating a bit!)

Liberals will still romp it in at the upcoming election. Labor is stuffed in WA, they reckon they will hold 3 out of 15 seats. Beazley is in trouble in his own electorate. Unfortunately he represents my electorate, but he is in for a nasty shock. He holds it by 13%, however in a recent poll he and the Liberal candidate were dead even. The Liberal candidate hasn't even campaigned in the electorate as they thought they had no chance. Liberals will win this election, the debate will be forgotten at the time of the election. Who really wants all the states and for Federally to be the Labor party in power. People in WA already know they have made a mistake electing Geoff Gallop and his cronies. Hope the rest of Australia doesn't make the same mistake. Unions are already exercising their power, the Royal Commission into them should shut them up for a while. Remember the debts racked up by Beazley ppl, this govt we have now saved us from caving in a hole. As for the GST we neded it. How else do you propose to pay for services. Income tax revenue will fall dramatically due to the ageing population. What do u suggest we just keep cranking up the income tax rates. That would really go down a treat now wouldn't it. That is why Beazley wont scarp it, he knows we need it, just to gutless to say it. His proposal to take it off tampons is pathetic really.

hahahahahahahaha, gee how intelligent would you be to vote for a candidate who couldnt even be bothered campaigning .... Must be a quality person hahahahahahahahaha

As for the debt, the libs have cut our debt by selling TELSTRA!!!! The so called debt under the previous Labour Gov was 5th best in the world, our debt in relation to the world is nowhere near as good now..... As for the GST, prior to this inciduos tax 45% of Gov expenditure was directed to health, under the GST THIS DROPS TO 34%, not too mention the States dont recieve benefits of the GST until 2007/8, thats 2 elections away in the meantime NO EXTRA FUNDING BY HOWARD FOR EDUCATION/HEALTH!!!!!!!!
