I thought somebody would know what the reason was.

Because even though Australia is an amazing country that has a history of welcoming many different cultures to it, we have a horrible history of ignoring our original cultures (I'm of 100% European ancestry btw), and this is a way of addressing that imbalance. A welcome to country before the game in and of itself isn't going to redress the wrongs of our past (as a collective, no one on this thread is responsible for the sins of earlier generations), but it makes all of us aware that as a nation, we are the inheritors of the oldest continuing culture on the planet, and should embrace our Indigenous citizens' contribution to our society for this and ensure that they finally feel as welcome and important to our country as those of us for whom discrimination is merely a word in the dictionary.
