Hey guys, let me just say first up that I am not an expert, I do not follow the junior competitions and am just a fan. I've merely looked at all the information that has been presented via the media and on here and come up with this.
I really have no idea so don't mark me too harshly, just doing this for fun as I have fallen in love with this game since moving down to Melbourne. Cheers
Pick 1. GWS - Lachie Whitfield – Dandenong Stingrays
Stand out junior footballer, smooth mover, good decision maker, dual sided. Whitfield is an easy decision for GWS as he is very classy and should develop into a star.
Pick 2. GWS - Jimmy Toumpas – Woodville West Torrens
Classy line breaking medium midfielder with great leadership qualities, massive work rate and abundance of skill. Toumpas just needs even luck with injuries and he will be a wonderful player.
Pick 3. GWS - Troy Menzel – Central Districts
GWS will pick the best available and bank on the fact there will still be a good defender at 12. Knee injuries a massive query but even if Menzel plays 100 games it will be worth more than 200 from most other players. The kind of player who can break open games at key times
Pick 4. Melbourne - Ollie Wines – Bendigo Pioneers
Melbourne have been all over this bloke for ages. Once they secured Viney it made perfect sense to get this tough nut who is his best mate and similarly hard-nosed inside mid they so desperately require.
Pick 5. Western Bulldogs - Jonathan O’Rourke –Calder Cannons
Dogs will be delighted this gem is still on the table ad will snap him straight up. Very classy outside midfielder who will complement their plethora of young inside mids beautifully.
Pick 6. Western Bulldogs - Jake Stringer – Bendigo Pioneers
12 months ago this bloke would have been top 2 but a shocking broken leg has put a big cloud over him. Great size for a mid, has good endurance and uses the ball very well. Dogs have loved him forever and will punt him.
Pick 7. Port Adelaide - Brodie Grundy – Sturt
As everyone has already stated, the bet ruckman in the draft and probably the best to come through in years. An absolute gift to the Power which they won’t pass up.
Pick 8. Brisbane Lions - Sam Mayes – North Adelaide
Brisbane are fans of Mayes who again 12 months earlier was rated a possible top 5. Cn play mid and tall enough to go forward and kick goals. Good mover and excellent mark.
Pick 9. Richmond - Lachie Plowman – Calder Cannons
After drafting quite well in recent years and forming a great midfield Richmond will opt for best available with this pick and take the best defender in the draft in Plowman.
Pick 10. Essendon - Joe Daniher – Calder Cannons
The best tall and probably the best player in the draft, absolute steal for the Dons. Will play in 2013 and will make an immediate impact. Star.
Pick 11. Carlton - Jackson Macrae – Oakleigh Chargers
A case of best available for Carlton. With Judd not getting any younger I think they will use this high pick on a midfielder who is clever, uses the ball well and has a nice frame to work on for the future.
Pick 12. GWS - Kristian Jaksch – Oakleigh Chargers
After deciding Menzel over Plowman, GWS will satisfy their need for a key defender with Jaksch, a tall rangy player blessed with beautiful Sam Reid type marking ability. At 194 cms Jaksch should be able to develop into the club’s best defender role and fill a hole in the current list.
Pick 13. Gold Coast - Josh Simpson – East Fremantle
Scott Clayton will be unable to resist the speed and class of this quality wingman. With a very nice midfield already emerging Simpson is the perfect man to bring in to add some speed and run to this emerging team.
Pick 14. GWS - Taylor Garner – Dandenong Stingrays
GWS has stockpiled quality mids and forwards so can probably use this pick on a potential x factor which is exactly what Garner is. A kid that has worked hard on his game and improved immeasurably, his only question mark is his shoulder which popped out 6 times this year.
Pick 15. North Melbourne - Nathan Hrovat – Northern Knights
Diminutive ball getting midfielder who appears the perfect replacement for Brent Harvey. Could turn into a Toby Greene type and surprise a few people.
Pick 16. Geelong – Nick Vlastuin – Northern Knights
Geelong will like this tough kid who fights hard for the ball and gets plenty of it. Might be a nice replacement for Chappy when he retires in a few years
Pick 17. Fremantle - Tim O’Brien – Glenelg
With a pretty balanced list already assembled Fremantle will look for a quality forward here to take over from Pav in fellow South Australian O’Brien. Highly rated but slender of build this kid is a work in progress but after a couple of off seasons should develop into a quality and dangerous forward option
Pick 18. Collingwood - Mason Wood – Geelong Falcons
The Pies wil go best available and take the talented Wood here, perhaps a replacement for Dawe.
Pick 19. Collingwood - Aidan Corr – Northern Knights
Collingwood will love this kid and love the fact he is still available. A real athlete who should emerge as a very good defender. Has all the athletic tools to be a star and also has a perfect size.
Pick 20. Adelaide - Ben Kennedy – Glenelg
Adelaide will use this pick on the best available player which is surely Ben Kennedy. Whilst they would love to take a key forward, I suspect O’Brien will be gone so they will then look to the nippy Kennedy to add some further speed to their midfield.
Pick 21. Collingwood - Dayle Garlett – Swan Districts
Collingwood will punt their 3rd pick on the enigmatic but brilliant Garlett. A top 10 player on talent alone the Pies will back their solid team culture and vast resources to get Garlett focussed and playing his best footy. If he does he will be the steal of the draft…but 64 dollar question…will he??
Pick 22. Western Bulldogs - Tom Clurey – Murray Bushrangers
With Brian Lake’s departure the Western Bulldogs will look to fill the void by taking the tall athletic running machine Clurey as his potential successor.
Pick 23. Sydney - Jesse Lonergan –Launceston
With much of the elite talent already snapped up expect the Swans to look at the Tasmanian Lonergan. Inside mid with strong defensive instincts who tested very well at the combine.
Pick 24. Brisbane Lions - Tanner Smith –North Ballarat
Brisbane will look to shore up their defence by acquiring Smith a key defender with good marking ability and movement.
Pick 25. St Kilda - Ben Jacobs – Port Adelaide
Expect St Kilda to opt for Jacobs and spoil North Melbourne’s plans. Solid player who should slot straight into the first team and make a good contribution.
Pick 26. St Kilda – Jackson Thurlow – Launceston
With the Sainters desperately looking to bolster defence expect them to give due consideration to Thurlow a strong 3rd tall option.
Pick 27. Melbourne - Jack Viney – Casey Scorpions
Father/son steal from the Dees. Tough, uncompromising, unrelenting gun midfielder. My tip for the Rising star award as will play big minutes in 2013 and will make a big impct.
Pick 28. GWS - Tim Membrey – Gippsland Power
Membrey is probably the player with the most potential swing in the draft. GWS will punt on the fact he’s a mature body and can act as a 3rd tall forward option. Might be relevant particularly if Tippett doesn’t come.
Pick 29. Hawthorn - Sam Colquhoun – Central Districts
Starting quite low in the draft the Hawks will take best available and snare this hard running South Australian who has a great ability to find the ball.
Pick 30. Port Adelaide - Tim Broomhead – Port Adelaide
Port Adelaide will take the local product here and will do well in doing so. Nice young midfielder that finds plenty of the ball and looks pretty fool proof. Should add to their emerging band of classy mids.
