OK, I know I posted this about a year and a half ago, but it seems there are a lot more SANFL professors on this board lately so I'll post it again.

(Plus, this board is kinda dead seeing as how it's pre-season.... oh, and I kinda forgot what your answers were.)

What are people's thoughts on Andrew Jarman as a player. A South Aussie I used to know claims that in his heyday he was better than Darren.

Any thoughts?

Agree until 1993. After 1993 Darren Jarman was the better player.

1986 - 1990 in the best 3 SANFL players for that period of time.

Could rival the best of the best in terms of hand skills. Equally skilled at finding a player in traffic with a handball as Greg Williams was. Great evasiveness. Decent foot skills.

I agree with crows98 in that with their pre-AFL days, Andrew was the better player. Once they were both in the AFL, Darren raised his game to a new level whilst Andrew performed probably at a similar level to what he did in the SANFL.

It's a shame that during his prime he was coached by Graham Cornes, who seemed to have a troubled relationship with him. He was an absolute genius with his hands in traffic, up there with Diesel Williams IMO. By 1993 Cornes was limiting the amount of time he spent in the middle for some reason, thinking that he was too slow.

For mine I'd have preferred a slow Jarman jogging through the midfield to a lightning quick Tregenza.

I find it hard to split them. Different players. At their best I think they'd both have cases of being as good as each other. Andrew I think would probably be the better midfielder, but Darren had the ability to kick freakish goals. Andrew was brilliant by hand, Darren brilliant by foot. The performances of Darren in the 97 & 98 Grand Finals probably sways me towards him, just.

People here have covered it pretty well so far. However I will stick my 2c worth in. I had the pleasure of seeing every game both Darren and Andrew played at North Adelaide (bar one - these bloody idiots that get married during the football season:rolleyes: :D ). Andrew was without question the most skilful in terms of use of the hands and right from early days had the ability to find a player in heavy traffic. Darren had the skills early but didn't seem to be as damaging at first. Funnily enough Darren really burst onto the scene after the Fosters Cup Game in 1986 where North played Collingwood and he played in the Centre as Andrew was out suspended. Both played the majority of their football in the Centre or on the ball. Andrew was the better centreman and Darren (certainly from 1987 onwards) was the better kick on the run for goal. His 50 metre goal from the boundary in the opening quarter of the 1987 Grand Final will live long in the memory.
Andrew did win the 1987 Magarey and probably should have won again in 1989 (a little bit too chatty with the umpires that year me thinks). Darren's goalkicking ability was always sublime but came to a zenith (oddly enough) after Andrew had moved onto Norwood in 1990. In that year he kicked goals that had no right to be kicked (including two 9 goal hauls when he was moved to Full Foward by coach Mick Nunan to shake off tags - sound familiar?)
Mick Nunan is on record as saying they are the best two players he ever coached but Darren was the better player to coach. Make of that what you will. But I think we all know what he means!:D

By the way to actually answer the question :D In their SANFL days Andrew would emerge as the better player but also remember Andrew played two more seasons (more or less) of SANFL than Darren did.

Why did he move to Norwood?

Allegedly it had a lot to do with the spray Mick Nunan gave the North Adelaide boys after the 1.9 performance in the 1989 GF.

1.8 (14)

If Craig Burton hasn't got a life membership at Prospect he bloody well should.

Handball.....AJ > DJ

any other aspect of the game ........DJ > AJ.

one of the last games that Fudd played for North he ran to the HFF and had a ping on the left from 50 hard up against the boundary and nailed it.......and did it consistently throughout his career.

Even in the SANFL - you just know that if he got it forward from centre and had a 10 metre break - he would run to 55 and goal.

Double the talent of AJ IMO

Goal square? more like 30 out

Nahh, wasn't that far. Of all the painful memories in footy, that one sticks out in my mind because you'd have to think that if he kicked that goal, we win the game and almost certainly the flag.

My recollection is that it wasn't in the goal-square either. Time plays tricks with the memory, but I would have thought that the man on the mark was about 15 metres out.

That's got me curious now - has anyone got a video of that game to define how far Jars actually did take the kick from?

The best thing Darren Jarman did was leave Adelaide and move to Hawthorn. He left as Andrews Jarman little brother and came back as Darren Jarman the genius who played football.

ok maybe not 30 and more like 20 out but not the goal square. :thumbsu:

pity that transition wasn't while playing for the AFC.....

still makes me angry.....

We all agree but IMHO he needed to get out of Adelaide and develop his own identity.

Also had DJ stayed in SA would Studly given as much game to Roo in 93 as early as he did, i know it's only 1 player but add Chris Mac and tony Mc with AJ and Trigger.

given that DJ was an onballer/forward and Roo started as a back pocket in those days.........I'm not sure it would have mattered.. ......

Yep - he won AA selection in just his second year (1994, I'Change) coming out of defence.

Even just a few years later when DJ did arrive they were able to play in the same side no worries.
