Andrew Lovett was outstanding last night and am a little surprised that the votes re Bulldogs thread has not seen one poster offer him any support. Sure it is competitive but...

Lovett was tremendous in setting up the offensive and also rebounding play from defense. And he really showed midfield potential. Electric movement, that the game plan from Knighter has required, Lovett was possibly the best effector of this last night. And he kept running in the last quarter.

I am wondering if his potential is not good but massive and we have only seen glimpses yet. His confidence needs nurturing and role clarified but if Knighter has any chance of succeeding with this game plan, the hype surrounding the houlis and other touted draftees needs to be shifted to more the inate talent in players like Lovett, Davey and Winderlich

His stats dont really tell the story but the quality and presence of his possessions has given me renewned faith in this bloke.

Am I the only one?

Re: 13

Needs to put on some weight.

If he can bulk himself up in a big way and keep his pace he could really improve. He has the skills and pace to be a quality player but his body at the moment really restricts the kind of influence he can have.

With a bigger body and more self-confidence then he can try and work his way into games a bit more. Ricky Dyson has shown this year that it is possible for a fast outside runner to bulk up like this and work his way into games, so Lovett should be able to do it too.

Unlike Ricky though Lovett has excellent skills and can find the ball and kick more goals.

I think that both Lovett and Dempsy can do this and make a solid impact in our midfield next year. I hope it happens.

Re: 13

I didn't rate his game. Had many opportunities to put his head over the ball and always shirked. Gets man handled and bumped from pillar to post in the middle. Also coughed it up quite a bit.

Agree totally.

He fumbled heaps and the main reason for this is he wouldn't move closer to the ball, as that would put his body in the line of fire, instead he reached out with his arms and fumbled, thus turning the ball over.

I hear what you say but I dont think he is that type of player. The bulking up is a current midfielders catch-cry, post Geelong and perhaps the Doggies, and may be generally true but I do not think it fits A lovett.

Re dyson he needed extra dimensions to compensate for the skills and real run that Lovett has. It might work against Andy as he is not really an in and under player, but a runner who can cover territory.

If his laziness is left 2007 and pre, then I think he can remain a lighter weight and use the talents he has to assist where we are going.

Re: 13

I agree with the others above. I don't think he was that great last night, for the reasons stated. He should try to copy Davey more.

If he does bulk up though he will get the confidence and the ability to fix those parts of his game.

Harsh Merv

and the notion here is about about his capacity to move the ball. He is not so heavily set to accommodate the physicality of the bounces and "body in the line of fire" play.

Has tremendous upsides in other ways.

At the moment I cannot find this for Mcphee for example.

Re: 13

Everything he touched in the last quarter and a half he stuffed up. Even when he run and bounced he should have given it to a loose Hille but had another bounce then had to kick to a contest. I put it down to match conditioning so that should improve and most feel it second game back.

Re: 13

It's all in his head. The talent is there, but as others have suggested he is not a big fan of going for the really hard contested ball.

He likes to wind up and come flying down past a contest and recieve a handball and use his best skill which is kicking.

The skill he should concentrate and improve on is his abilitiy to win the ball in crowded, heavy traffic and get it to our advantage or take the run himself.

But in saying that, half our team needs improvement in that area. We are constantly getting bumped off the ball in packs. Every time Dyson is in a centre bounch,we might as well be one man short in the guts. He does nothing constructive.

Players like Lovett should have their shit togther by now. I can't help but think that blokes like McPhee,Lovett and NLM have gotten away with murder while Sheeds was coaching and they are playing with bad habits that should have been wiped out years ago.

Re: 13

5/10.

That little bit of stupidity where he dragged the Bulldogs player off I think it was Slattery, which resulted in the free kick being reversed, was just dumb football.

That umpire deserved to be shot Pazza and if you think otherwise, then you deserve a bullet as well.

Re: 13

Lovett is one of the most sublimely balanced players in the competition when kicking on the run. He has shown he can be a real match winner but he stills needs consistency.

I think its fair to say his mind wasn't on the game last season, although against the Bulldogs he didn't play at his best, it still looks as though he really wants to stamp himself as major cog in the team.

P.S. Very positive assessment!
