Hey guys, I don't post here often and I know I'll probably get slammed for this, especially considering someone always brings up something about available players, but do you think there would be any interest for Lovett?
Considering if we had a deficiency in something I would probably nominate speed I guess he could fill that void. As much as I don't like him, he did impress me with his interview in the age saying that he would play for peanuts on the rookie list and that a club could put as many clauses in his contract.
What would be the general feeling?

His fitness is questionable as hell, his footballing ability is just as questionable at this point, and his reward vs. risk factor is low. That being said, I'd rather him at the club than Fevola, but would prefer neither!

There was another thread on this mid year. No, we shouldnt sign him.

Saw him play Division 2 football in the NFL for Fitzroy Stars this year and fair to say he was a shell of his former mediocre and inconsistent self. There's a reason why he'd play for peanuts also...

I would rather draft Fev, play him into his 40's so as to qualify him for father son selection and then draft and grossly overpay his most likely going to be pisshead son and play him until HE reaches enough games to qualify for father son selection and so on and so forth for several generations.

Thats how far i'd go to ensure that Andrew Lovett never comes near Collingwood if it was a choice between them.

why is there a thread for seemingly every unsigned misfit on our board ?

im sure jon ralph is an alias here somewhere......"pies fans support recruiting blah blah"

lovett, fevola, dawson - there was never a chance in hell any one of them were ever ever ever gonna be signed by us, considering our current position, list, sponsors etc etc.

lovett was massively overrated by the aints when pick 8 was used to recruit him - i rated him a 3rd round pick at best due to the many issues he had before the bad stories surfaced.

I doubt we'd have any interest at all tbh.

Even at his best, he seemed so inconsistent.

Just rarely he'd put it all together and he'd look great, but nah, way too sporadic.

Yes he had speed but he's 30 now, and I cannot see a spot for him at all on our list.

Off field aside, his on field record was nothing to write home about either...just 88 games, not many for a player who was 28 at the time StKilda drafted him. Take away his one good season (2009) and there isnt much to write home about.

We don't need an oldish, inconsistent, one way player let alone one with baggage. He wasn't traded out of Essendon becuase he was about to be involved in controversy, he was traded because he underperformed AND had off field issues.

I agree with what's been said. He was a problem player that Essendon had to trade even though they were short on midfielders. He didn't turn up to training sessions, would get drunk during the week etc.

He's old, he was never that good, but he had pace. Now he hasn't played a game for 2 years.

Definitly would take him - provided he could convince our staff that he would be able to regain sufficient fitness.

He would only take up a rookie spot (low cost and 1 year contract) and would be a far greater chance to add to our team and make our team better THIS YEAR (when our window is wide open) than anyone else who was overlooked in a very shallow draft year. If he doesn't, then no harm done. Not worried about his off-field antics. If he plays up, he is gone, and we lose nothing.

Who would you have rather had on your list last year - Declan Reilly or Andrew Lovett? Tom Gordon or Andrew Lovett? Jack Perham or Andrew Lovett?

I'd rather fatso the wombat in front of Lovett. Was no good in the WAFL last year too

That is fair enough, but I am interested to know why? Is it because he was an Essendon player? Dodgy past?

We need to look past these biases and assess our options based on value to the club. Fatso the Wombat couldn't potentially help our flag chances next year. Andrew Lovett absolutely could.

I just don't want us to waste another year of dominance, and Lovett is a proven senior player capable of brilliance, and who would come to us at almost no significant cost, and no detriment to our chances (only upside).

I will be shattered if we don't get another flag from this window, and it will be shutting from next year.

Did anyone else read this as "Fatso the Wombat" was no good in the WAFL last year.

If so, I'm shocked, I thought Fatso was going to be a top 10 pick, must have had a bad year.:p

Well I don't think he was that good to start with. Essendon sacked him for bad behaviour, he rolled up at St kilda unfit, had the saints players offside immediately. He is 30yo too, hasn't played top flight for 2 years. Enough?

At draft camp he failed the vertical leap

He has a very dodgy past.

If we were to draft him anyway it would be in the rookie draft and would need to be upgraded to play, and I don't think a person who hasn't played top level footy in 2 years would be beneficial to the team. He could benefit the VFL team though....

He's a very mediocre player, his form goes up and down; although at his best he can be very good. At bit like Cyril with his form. There could be a detriment, if he stuffs up again and that is making front page headlines, distracting from the teams form.

I also disagree at the claim our Premiership window closes end of next year. I still reckon we have another 3 years max.

If we were looking to go backwards.

But even if that were the case, the better option would be to snap up John McCarthy.

Bloke's just asking a question, tis what the boards are for.....

yeah i appreciate that. but its like a HS journo trying to judge the level of interest, even tho 'blind freddy' could tell you there will be zero.

why no thread on gavin urquhart, or michael coad, or some other guy 5+ years younger ? is it because his name is in the paper ? id strongly assume so.

id rather add leon to our rookie list on the very remote chance he'd return to us - certainly 1000 times more hope of getting a senior game.

A valid question being asked is why such a blanket no for Lovett when we just last year selected a similarly mature aged, talented & troubled Krakouer.

I think from an offield point of view Lovett should be given another go to redeem himself. I think too much weight has been attached to his past issues. It all depends on his current state of mind & attitude, the past is the past.

From an on field point of view there is no doubt he has or at least had the speed & skills to impact AFL footy. If we thought we could extract this from him consistently his recruitment would be a no brainer.

However, the problem is that he has not really performed that well since leaving AFL. This is the major difference between him & Krakouer. Krak went back to WAFL and played out of his skin, this demonstrated he had lost nothing and even improved as a player. That makes it impossible for recruiter to ignore.

Lovett needed to go to a VFL or WAFL club and do something similar. As he didn't it makes it hard for recruiters to think that he is the same player or better than he was. Too much of a risk. I give Fev some kudos for the way he has approached his comeback - there is not really a question over his ability because he showed he can still perform at a high level so it will come down to his age & offield behaviour, but at least he corrected the one thing he could influence.
