What do you guys think of Mackie? I recon he's a great player, but will he get the TOG this year? Is there any hope he could break into midfield?

I think he's a decent wingman/flankman but I don't thing he's "great". And by great i'm talking GAblett or Chapman great.

I don't know about "great" but have seen him play some very good football - there were some lacklustre performances last year but it would be hard to single him out among so many others who thought they were already in the "great player" category. He is still slight at 84 kgs and is referred to as a matchstick but has shown that he is quick to recover and can hold his ground. Is a 23 year old going to physically develop much more? - I wonder.

When you're as tall as Mackie is (which is taller than you think), 84 kgs is simply not big enough. The club has been patient and it may be a sensible move, bodies do take time to mature. But he has to get bigger - around 90kgs I reckon would be a good weight for him.

Thats a fair call...but he is starting to look class to me and he will take enough attention away from Gaz and Chappy to make their lives easier this year...so it works both ways..

just to put some perspective on his size

Mackie
192 cm
84 kg

Djerrkura
176 cm
80 kg

so mackie has been in the system for a few years now but is only 4kg heavier than a 1st year player that is 16cm shorter than him.

Mackie is on the verge.
Just decision making and disposal need to go to the next level. If they don't it won't matter how big he is or isn't.
If those skills improve he could be a very valuable "swingman".
James Hird comes to mind as a player of similar physical attributes (what is his height and weight?) who plays the I go everywhere role.
Mind you Hird is the best decision maker in the game!

He was drafted as a forward and has never really cemented a spot. But when they put him on the wing last year a new mackie emerged. He is quick and a great long kick of the ball on the run. He is never going to be any much bigger than he is now but that is not necessarily a detriment to him. I think he a role on the wing rotating forward is going to see him get a lot of game time in the Seniors this year. He played some good footy last year on the wing and Bomber stated several times to the media how happy he is with Mackie playing on the wing.

He finished off last year very well - had about 3-4 games where he got 20+ disposals in a row, was fast for his height and kicked a few goals. He wont be a KPP, but is a handy tall wingman/half forward. But I noticed the other day he was being played more as a half back. He wasn't doing too bad and he did set a few things up. Should play 16-20 games this year for about 5-12 goals.

He is getting better, and bigger, his weight did go up slightly from last season. If he keeps improving at the rate he did last season he is definately a player to look forward to.

I think you'll find that in Game 1 of the NAB, 4 or 5 of Mackie's 50 metre kicks into the forward line resulted in goals. He seemed to know where to find the big forwards on the lead. It looked like he was slung around a fair bit when caught in possession tho. I think you'll see Mackie and Corey playing as creative midfielders this season off half back and through the centre. Go Mackster!

I agree. It's great to see him living up to his potential which must upset those who have participated in bagging him along with other players/ :thumbsu:

Thats what I noticed last week, Mackie got enough possesions and when ever he was in the middle, bombed It beautifully to the forward's. I would say he would be in our best 18 players on the wing.
