Believe it or not, (provocative title aside) this is not an effort to troll Essendon, as I am confident the player in question, Andrew McGrath, will become a very very good player.

I have raised this as I just don't see McGrath having the outstanding talent that is usually becoming of a number 1 pick. He looks to be a quick, clean, line breaking, hard tackling back pocket player in the mould of a Sam Docherty, Rory Laird, Heath Shaw. This is an outstanding player to have on your list, but as a number 1 pick, it seems uninspiring. Small players drafted that high you would expect to show freak levels of ability.

I don't think any club would offer a number 1 pick in exchange for any of the aforementioned players, so why would you use a number 1 pick in the draft for a player who, at best, looks to have a ceiling roughly the equal of those players?

From what I've seen just after 3 games, he is going to be a superstar

Watch his TAC highlights and you'll see what he's capable of when played in the midfield. Which is where he'll end up.

Very uneducated post.

A Carlton fan having a dig at another club's draft selections?

Spot on - 3 games into his AFL career is definitely the right amount of time to judge his ceiling as a player.

Have a look at everyone pre draft week talking about player potential. Why should that stop once they've played a few AFL games? Not saying that peoples predictions are correct, but at early stages sometimes it is possible to get a feel of what a player may become.

I remember watching Dangerfield stand up in a tackle in his first AFL game against Essendon and thinking to myself 'this guy will be unstoppable one day'

Sometimes you can pick them, sometimes you're way off

The question is will that translate into AFL midfield dominance? I watched the TAC cup GF and although McGrath dominated possession, I wasn't as impressed in the manner of which he did it as much as I was of say Will Brodie.

You could have started a thread about most overrated numbers ones, one that sits on top of that list is Kruezer

I'm very confident it will. Just as Heppell did & Callum Mills will. Watch this video, it shows more midfield highlights than that of the TAC.

Thought Adam Cooney was a dud and Andrew Walker was the star geez Cooney was better before injuries.

Daniel Rich looked the gun, Nic Nat looked the dud.

It's all timing. Three games in is a small sample size. Don't be surprised when McGrath builds his endurance and core and you see his real game sense. Amazing lack of patience in footy atm.

Back Pocket is where you learn to play the game isn't it?

Give you a quick tip....

If you got a Heath Shaw/Sam Docherty clone would you be unhappy? No.

That is at worst for McGrath.

He will be a bonafide midfielder though, as he has something that is tough to coach and that is vision and awareness. Absolute certainty post Heppell to be their next captain in all likelihood.

****in' LOL.

Yeah sure, delist.
