Just been thinking (dangerous I know) about the retirement of the big Truck. I know they seem to have earmarked Hartigan for the Full back spot but he seems to be a little suspect, and feel may be more suited to a third tall defender. So the question is who goes FB. What about Andy Otten? already a proven defender, mobile without being lightening quick, reads the play well, good size and probably our most experienced defender.

Thoughts..

Is better as a 3rd tall, defensively whilst he's done a few good jobs, is often exposed. I'd also rate, behind Rutten, Talia as our most experienced defender, he's only a couple of games behind Otten in total games played, but Otten has played a bunch as a forward/midfielder. Talia has played on the absolute creme de la creme of KPF's, versus the 3rd talls Otten has largely played against.

Hartigan is the guy, just needs to be cut a little slack considering he's only played 10 AFL games. He's still makes a few mistakes, but being a good defender is as much about experience and good instruction as it is natural talent and I think Hartigan is learning well. Bock looked no where near as accomplished as Hartigan has when he debuted and there's plenty other defenders in the league who took a while to properly develop into reliable types. We've been blessed by Rutten, Talia and to a lesser extent Davis just walking straight into a key defensive post and performing to such a high level. For others it takes time, experience and maturity. With another preseason under his belt, I'd expect Hartigan to be a more than capable replacement for Rutten.

That's not to say we should keep looking for alternatives, I'd love to see us unearth another Bock style CHB, who can provide offensive drive as well as shut down, but they don't come around terribly often.

Personally I don't see Otten as a Key position type, never have, he's a tall flanker/midfielder in my view and is wasted in pure shut down roles.

If anything, Talia moves to full back when rutten retires.

Otten either the 3rd tall medium option or chb depending on matchups.

Is there such a thing as full back anymore? Because theres no such thing as a full forward. Its really just best forward and best defender. Talia already has that stitched up for the next 8 years. Otten is our best KPB offensively so he should just take the 3rd forward so he doesnt have to be as accountable as the others.

What he ^^^^ said.

We need Otten to doing what he was doing in the last quarter of the Collingwood final in 2009 when Rutten gave away the match winning free kick. Otten would of been a hero if it wasn't for Rutten. Wasn't it early next season Ottens career would be defined by a knee reco?

If Siggins and Hartigan come along as expected, we're set for key defenders. Our challenge is to find a proper mid-sized defender, the likes of which we haven't had since Torney/Massie.

Looks like we've stopped trying to mould CEY into this player, maybe we could tempt Cam Shenton into coming back home to fulfil this role? Really, really like what I've seen from him at the Saints in the last few games.

I got no idea what we should be doing with Otten.

I used to think he was most useful as a 3rd tall defender, but then he was actually really effective as a forward in the second half of last year. Unless we have epic injuries again though, I cant see him playing forward much again.

He's not strong enough to take on the main tall forwards, and not mobile enough IMO for the mediums.

In the end, I think he takes Reilly's spot.

FB: Talia (Has proven he can beat the best fwd week in week out)

CHB: Otto (Hardly ever beaten by the opponents he's put on. Nowdays there is rarely a great second tall anyway bar Franklin/tippett so Otto would hold his own against most. Just needs to keep his feet Ffs has become Dougy 2011)

Could L.Thompson ever become that player? I assume his time is quickly running out, but would like to see him one final time this year before we make the cut. Got a feeling he's more of a 3rd tall though. But if memory serves me correct, has a bit of speed along with a decent kick which could translate into the above potentially. Done a few nice jobs defensively but we haven't see him in a long time now so I'm not sure what exactly is holding him back from been given a shot as a KP defender. Could just be the fact that they don't believe he's physically big enough to play as a KP defender at AFL level and there are others ahead of him as a 3rd tall defender, not entirely sure.

Luke Thompson has been our best tall defender in the SANFL this year. His Raven form has been much better than Rutten or Otten (those who saw Mitch Thorp stitch up Andy at the Bay are probably as nervous as myself about Andy's promotion).

I think that every time someone suggests playing Luke, Sando has a flashback to Cyril out marking Luke late in the "One Kick" preliminary final.

LT is a much better player than Shaw. Even Kelly has passed Shaw going by SANFL form.

I am hoping today that Otten spends at least some time up forward where I really rate him. I suspect he may spend at least some time as 3rd tall with Pod's spending some time back.

Once Hartigan sorts his disposal and decision making out he should be a good long term defender for us.

Don't like Otto as a KPP, bit slow for the likes of Day and not strong enough for the likes of Cloke

IMO Otto is best served as a 3rd tall at either end of the ground or even on the wing as a link player

Hartigan has progressed well for little games but Otten is the far better & surer player now.

If hartigan plays it is when we rest truck.

Ps otten showed once again he can easily match up on the bigger forwards for those suffering short term memory.

If Rutten is injured/dropped again this season; I'd like to see Talia to FB, Otten/Thompson as CHB/3rd tall. As good as he is at negating big forwards, for me Hartigan turns the ball over a little too regularly to be trusted at AFL level at the moment.

I quite like Otten as a swingman, Mr Fixit.

Did well as a forward last year. Was a mid in his youth.
I knew that there were plans to have the migration happen, but they have been ongoing for months, and I didn’t know it was being done this week.

I'd play him wherever he's the worst matchup for the opposition.
