Really needs to build strength and confidence in his knee again and that may take some time. I do know that Otten has a good footy brain and when he's confident it seems like he has all the time in the world. Would be a real asset to have a player that can play Midfield, Tall and Small Defender. I believe he will come good eventually, but it may not be at the Crows...

Oh that is just wrong !!! .......This injury excuse was used for Ken McGregor for 2 years (guess his injury never did get better )

Stop blaming injury on Ottens form .....it's just a crap excuse

He was running fine in last seasons finals and don't read too much into 1 PS game and a trial game in exhaustive temperatures.

How can anyone draw form comparisons yet!! ......good or bad, and that includes Tambling[/quote]

Yeh, but if andy can't perform because it's hot and tambo does then surely that means that the bling is back.

The rumour at the time was that he had Osteitis Pubis, a condition which was rampant at the time, but which seems to have almost completely disappeared from the footy lexicon since then.
Yep .....demonstrates the fashionability of absolutely everything to do with the AFL ....from venacular, trading, coaches profiles and selection, and of course drafting strategies

Hardly an innovative thought amongst the clubs .....just follow the leader

Or .....not all players have hit form yet

That's why we play PS games ...to play people into form and teams to fine tune their structures and gamestyle

Yeh I know. I hope he gets given a chance in the 'real' nab games though. He deserves that and if he doesn't get that chance then it would be the biggest waste of a 3 year contract I've seen. Because if he doesn't get this chance, you wouldnt think hed be getting it in the season proper. Unless they've already pencilled him in.

No he'll get his chance .......behind Shaw he's our best 3rd tall option

Can play talls and smalls ......we have to persevere, he'll come good

Otten was never fast, didn't have great closing speed but he knew where to be, and how the play was likely to unfold. He had timing, instincts, anticipation & no small amount of courage

Hard to see what has happened to him, often seems a step slow, lost even.

injury shouldn't curb your timing & instincts?

Looks like it has though

He was never fast, but now he looks like he's swimming in treacle.

Can't remember Otten being any good at all in 2012. 2013 will be his third year back from his knee reco. Hopefully we'll see a bit more of the 2009 Otten.

Some of us are making calls on Otten far to soon. We've played two half matches and a practice, both in the heat.
Good call - far too early to judge on pre-season games.

Signs were promising when he played some useful games late last year.

Otten has never been quick, but he has footy smarts to get to the right spots/finds the ball & doesn't get caught much.

think some people hanging on to lost hope from memory otten form is 09 was due to playing as a loose in a defense with likes of bock rutten stevens mcleod and johncock all of whom were rarely beaten now his expected to take the 2nd or 3rd best foward

Quality post.

And I think it is completely fair to say this is a make or break year for Otten. 6 games last year and he was only included in the prelim final because we had injuries to Shaw and Talia.

Also - preseason is absolutely the right to be assessing a player like Otten. We had 20 players play 19 or more games last year with two departing (Tip / Doughty). This means that we have 18 first choice players whose preseason is all about finding touch / form and managing themselves to be ready to go for round 1. These guys are not going 100%.

The rest of the squad are playing for those final 4 spots. Personally I think 2 of those spots are filled with Hendo and JJ - which in my mind leaves 2 spots up for grabs. Fighting for these spots are Martin / Shaw / Otten / Riley / Crouch / Tambling / Brown / Mckernan / L Thompson / Lynch / Kerridge / Lyons.... These guys need to perform. Out of this group - Martin / Otten / Tambling are under the most pressure as they have been in the AFL system the longest and have not produced enough at AFL level to be assured of staying on next year. They have to put their best foot forward to ensure they are either in the rd 1 side or are next in case of an injury.

Thats why this preseason is crucial for Otten. He is behind in the pecking order (based on last year he is behind Truck / Talia / Thompson / Shaw for a spot in defense) and if he doesn't show enough now - he might not get a chance during the season (especially if Truck/Talia/Shaw all play 22 games).

Re watching the prelim as there are many stating how well Otto played. I can't remember him having that
good of a game..

1st QTR:
On Lewis.. Lewis outbodies Otto and drops an easy mark whilst falling over. Otten gets 2 touches on the rebound.
Uncontested mark and 20 metre kick to Crows player.
(Sidenote - that 50 against Mackay was shocking).... (another sidenote - how good is Sloane and Rutten also looks good against Buddy early).
Outbodies Pupolo and drops a mark. Gets a handball / tackle in scrum.
Good tackle on Young.
Takes an uncontested mark whilst on Young. Horrible kick in by Hawthorn favouring Otto. Good disposal (short kick).
Otten kick inside 50 misses the target. Turnover.

2nd QTR:

Forces Gunston onto his left at HF.
Gets ball on the wing. Tackled and gets caught holding the ball.
Gets beaten in a 1on1 by Bruest - luckily Reilly helps out.
Good hanball to douglas in the middle of the ground.

Thats the half... Very vanilla from Otten...

Some other notes - Hendo looks very good. We will miss Doughty and Tippo more than many realise in 2013... Petrenko/Callinan/Luke Thompson/Otten all very average in the first half.

Will watch the 2nd half later.

I don't disagree with anything you've written. I just wish to point out that Martin has 2 years left to run on his contract (signed last year), whereas Otten & Tambling are both out of contract at the end of 2013.

Will watch the 2nd half later.

3rd Quarter -
Tackle on Bruest - Bruest gets handball away.
Open across Half Back. Good 30 metre pass to VB in the middle.
Uncontested mark in defensive 50. Good 20 metre kick.
Open across the middle. 20 metre pass to Wright inside 50 resulted in a Smith goal.
Otten uncontested possession inside defensive 50. 15 metre kick.

- Also watch the Van Berlo goal in the 3rd quarter... Tippo so good in that passage - Otto isn't getting near it so i will put in some other comments. Sando moving Hendo as the loose man was a great move.

4th Quarter -

Uncontested mark from a point. 10 metre kick back to Mackay.
Takes a great mark 1 on 1 inside Defensive 50. Stupidly plays on and is forced to send a long handball to Danger which results in out of bounds.
Open across the middle - good 20 metre kick to VB.

Stopped the game at the 5 minute mark... too painful to watch after the stiffy goal.

To those who claimed Otten played well need to have another look. Was in our bottom 5 on the day. L Thompson played well in the 2nd half as did Hendo. There was no Otto chopping off passes - no Otto rebounding from half back. Almost every time he got the ball he was stagnant and nervous.

Some other thoughts on that 2nd half. How good was Danger? Tippo also awesome in that 2nd half. Really impressed by Hendo who will play 22 games if healthy. Smith was fantastic for a youngster as was Luke Thompson. Porps was fantastic - clean, quick and very effective with his disposal. Think he will be a vital midfield cog for us.

If you had gone on for another 20 seconds you will have seen the immediate answering goal. Rioli outmarks Thomson in one on ine in the goal square. Given all the circs both Otten and Thomson were ok, but thats all. Missed Talia and Shaw.
