Thought I'd start a separate thread for talk about the Animals and any requests for help or donations for the animals caught in this horror.

I just heard on 3AW that the Oakliegh Police Station has called for Tinned Dog and Cat food as well as Dry Food and Feed for Stock and Horses.

Request for donations of animal supplies

Release date: Wed 11 February 2009

Last updated: Wed 11 February 2009

Oakleigh Police are asking the public to contribute supplies for animals effected by the recent bushfires.

Donations of non-perishable tinned or dry food for dogs and cats, and produce for poultry and horses; as well as items such as dog leads, blankets, drinking containers, old towels and horse equipment such as rugs, halters, leads and feed buckets are currently being sought.

The donations will be distributed to animal owners in the effected areas – including relief and wildlife centres and shelters.

Anyone able to assist is asked to take the supplies to the drop off point at Oakleigh Police Station, 1 Atherton Rd, Oakleigh.

All donations will be very gratefully received.

Subject: Dog respite care for bush fire victims

Fun4Paws - Dog respite care for bush fire victims

Hello all,

Fun4Paws is currently offering emergency respite care to the animals affected by the bush fires, however there are many more animals than we have carers.

There are large numbers of owners with nowhere to place their dogs. If you are able to offer a place to a dog in your home, please contact myself of Lynne Fitzsimmons and we will coordinate.

Luke - 0415 104 044 contact@fun4paws.com.au Lynne - 0428 844 810 or lynne@fun4paws.com.au

If you are interested please let us know when your home would be available (dates) and if you have any other pets for us to consider when placing.

Dog Listeners Australia wide have pledged $1000.00 the assist in the costs of food, petrol etc. so we hope that all costs of looking after a dog will be covered.

Please assist us by forwarding this email on to all of your contacts so that together we can help the hundreds of dogs in need of temporary homes.

**** sake, I'm getting real tired of these people assuming those donating towards the bushfire victims (human or otherwise) don't already donate to other causes.

You don't know, so don't try and guess.

Crazy Q, this is what I have chosen to do due to my own circumstances.

I'm just doing what I am in a position to do, nothing more or less.

A dog forum I post on, people are taking in animals, not just dogs, but whatever they can handle, some are also taking humans as well.

We have a number of sea containers leaving on Friday to the area full of clothing and stuff. I took in a bunch of dog and cat food yesterday.

I think the farmers are doing a hay run all over the county to feed the horses etc.

I will go buy some cat/dog food from Coles on friday and send it over.

a customer who had 200 arces no house not built yet . her cattle survived the steel creek fires i think it was , no fences now were able to get up sunday and put up temp fences tractors etc etc burnt sadly not insured for them , good they were not up there and good their cattle are ok food wise ?

People, fair enough, but **** you'd rather give food/money to an animal instead of a third world country?

Pretty stupid.

If you care so little, why bother even opening the thread? Don't derail this thread like Embers did with the Bushfire info thread. If you want to debate the pros and cons of which charities people should support, take it to the SRP board.

The insensitivity and lack of compassion that has been shown by a very small few on here in the last few days is very sad. Makes you wonder about some people.

Edit - great work Tess and others, the animals who have suffered through these fires deserve as much care as anyone.

Good thread, and a great cause. Heard today on the news that they're estimating up to one MILLION wildlife is feared to have perished.:(

I'll certainly be donating as much as I can, and will work out a way I can take in some of these injured and displaced animals.

Thats just awful!

I was wondering, if people are not yet being allowed back up to their properties, whats happening to pets/stock up there that have been burnt/in pain?

There where Vets on the TV euthanizing some animals and treating others today so something is being done.

Apparently the journo's could hear gunshots in the distance as injured live stock was euthanased in the days just after the worst of the fires.

They are NOT going to show that or talk about the details of putting the animals out of their misery on air as it would distress too many. Sam that Koala who drank the water is such a big story because she is just one of the few who survived. She is a good story, the Jouro's are not going to show the rest of her family that may have burnt to death or had to be euthanased.

If anyone can take care of a persons pet for a few days, weeks, months while they get their lives together with the knowledge their pet is safe a secure with a bit of TLC, it's not much to do.

exactly. I know of a few coppers who have had to put down struggling livestock suffering horrific burns. Its just bloody terrible. I hear the RSPCA is desperate for animal cages etc to put injured animals in after operation. Blankets etc are also required.

Hey idiot, don't criticise others for making decisions like that.

I HAVE NEVER given, nor would EVER give, a red cent to a third world country but donate all the time to animal shelters.

If I was in victoria then I would be doing all i can to help the animals - native or domestic.

I agree Tess, but on Ch10 (i think) the other day they showed a half burnt sheep unable to walk on one leg. I havnt seen the footage since so they must have pulled it.
