Announcing the No. 1 Early

The word is we might name Watts as early as Thursday at a Volvo dealership, as part of promoting both the club and the sponsor.

Anyone else thinking we might be trying to convince Volvo to step up in terms of their sponsorship deal at the club by doing this? Whilst it is good publicity for the club, the fact we will be doing it at a Sponsorship Do suggests other motives.

Would be good if true. Perhaps the AFL will go easy on the Toyota monopoly and let us have a competitor on board.

If they did you would think that they would be breaking some sort of contract that Toyota are holding them to as part of the sponsorship of AFL.

Possibly.

Though you do wonder how we are able to have Volvo as a low level sponsor but not as a title sponsor?

Yeah, I'm not sure about the exact policy (someone may be able to clarify it) but given that North have Mazda, Geelong have Ford, Carlton have Hyundai and talk of Richmond bringing back Nissan in some capacity etc... I don't understand why there would have to be a distinction with us.

Either way, I am not so sure that Volvo would be that eager to take on a major sponsor role.

I like the idea, but I don't...
On the one hand, it helps the club with a lot of media coverage and exposure, eg Jack Watts will get a full double page work up on Friday titled meet this years no.1, without having any of the other draftees mentioned.
On the other hand, it ruins the draft, because what is to stop WCE saying that they will take NN half an hour after our announcement? The draft could potentially be over by the time it's meant to start.

Also nnn, Imagine being the Volvo Demons, as if we don't cop enough over our image already...

As stated in a couple of articles, you have to ask for permission to announce who you are going to choose.

I'm guessing the AFL would only allow us, if anyone, to name the pick. It helps them somewhat, creates a bit of public buzz about the draft.

I know, but if they grant it to us, why wouldn't they grant it to WCE to announce their choice?
I don't think they will allow it because who wants to see the draft start at #2, or #50 for that matter...
