Roos jump at the chance to impress coach
By CLAIRE KILLEEN

KANGAROOS coach Dean Laidley is certain he is close to settling on a line-up for the opening round of the Wizard Cup in two weeks. The North Melbourne club had its first official hitout yesterday at Robertson Oval in Wagga with the majority of the squad jostling for first up positions. Former Lockhart player David Trotter sat on the sidelines due to hamstring twinge, although he will have two more opportunities to press for selection in the coming weeks.
Laidley said he was impressed with ruckman Nathan Thompson, midfielder Corey Jones and Joel Perry, who all worked hard throughout the game.
“We mixed the teams up to give the younger players a chance out there,” Laidley said.
“We did a couple of match-ups and we had Sav Rocca and Nathan Thompson in the goal square, but then they started to score a couple of goals so I mixed it up again.
“But there were a few of the younger guys, Nathan Thompson, Joel Perry and Corey Jones, who played really well out there.”
With players keen to cement a spot early in the season proper, none of the squad was prepared to hold back during the game.
“I spoke with the players last night and I think they knew it was a full hitout,” Laidley said. “I think it was a great chance for the younger guys to get themselves a spot for the first eight rounds. The younger guys especially can get a chance.
“It’s amazing how quickly the games will add up when they are out there.” Laidley was also pleased that not one of the 35-strong Kangaroos squad came away from the game with an injury.
“I think they could have played another two quarters,” Laidley said.
“The fitness is right where we want it. The players will have another two chances on Monday and then on Friday next week for a spot in the team.
“But by all accounts I think the team is ready to go.”
The Kangaroos will play Geelong in round one of the Wizard Cup at Manuka Oval, Canberra.
