Apparently we have been thrashed by the bombers on our own turf. In the 'Ron Clarke classic' today at Corio, which amongst other feature events has a 3000 metre race between GFC and EFC, all our reps got lapped. I'm not sure who ran for us, but 21 of the Essendon lads ran.

I wouldn't have expected those guy to be gun 3000m runners. A few of them are just fast over short distances and the others are ruckmen.
Ling or Corey would've been the type of players who could've done better.

Oh no, we got beaten by another team in a running around in circles race. It's only December for crying out loud. If we were getting lapped in a similar race in late February, early March then I'd be worried.

Id rather them be chased by Bombers than chased by the cops outside Crown.

Some teams obviously arent training just yet..........

I've cut up my 2006 membership card at this disgraceful loss

I'll go you one better and cut up my 2007 membership card at this disgraceful loss. :D

(btw. Thanks to the GFC, for being very efficient and NOT stuffing up my membership for once. Well done :thumbsu: )

An inside source tells me the club weren't particular who ran for us and those that did run were told not to try. On the otherhand, Essendon were using it as a time-trial. Apparently, organisers of the meeting were not too happy with GFC's efforts. How many Grand Finals are won on aths tracks on 2nd December though?

I was down there and watched the 'race'.

It was very embarrassing from a Geelong FC viewpoint. Essendon treated it like a race and did it as a full team event. The winner Bachar Houbli ran 10.10 which is pretty good going.

The Cats on the other hand seemed to send a random 6 blokes (Blake??) and just jogged around with their fitness bloke making an apparent mockery of the event and copping plenty of jeers from the crowd.

That was unfortunate for the blokes who ran (obviously under instruction) but you would not believe how slow they were running (over 5 min/k I'd estimate). A shame for the locals and for Lee Troop who put a stack of time and effort into this and is trying to get it off the ground as a true Geelong event.

The concept is a really good one just unsure why the GFC refused to play ball?

Who really gives a toss./ Im glad that the fitness coach stuck to his schedule and didnt jsut let them go in it for the media exercise. As he said it didnt fit into his schedule and he wanted them fully up for a session today. To me thats far more important than running laps with the wooden spooner for an event that has nothing to do with the Cats.

Yet after the catastrophe of this year u think the club would want some good PR to boost a disgruntled membership base...not really a good way to go about it. These are elite athletes, would an extra 3 km run have completely ruined their pre-season?

Given we were never going to take it seriously, I just wonder why we did it at all in the first place.

I think the new training staff are actually giving a toss about it. Plan their training and get them in condition for the season and not just a 3km time trial. They really should not have done it if they were not interested.

3k would not have ruined their season however do you know what their load was the 2 or 3 days before that? If this was scheduled as their rest session it may have torn a groin, or a hammy, Quad what ever. Im sure then more morons in here would be calling for blood saying it should never have happened and why isnt the new training staff watching out for them

From what I'm lead to believe, Essendon had 28 players down there, Geelong only had 3 or 4 plus Paul Haines and another staff member. Makes you wonder how far in advance Lee Troop got in contact with the club about it. I'd imagine if enough notice was given training services would've scheduled training in such a way that the 3000m race was included.

This is the issue. The Geelong brand is at a low after the embarrassing season, the review saga and Thompson's childish outburst. What was needed was some positive PR, something the club haven't had for a long time and appears to be something they don't know how to get.

Don't get me wrong, it'll have no impact on membership and people allegedly refusing to sign up (see today's GA) because it is just stupid. But the image of the club is somewhat tarnished, again.

If we weren't going to take it seriously, then we shouldn't have bothered at all. A plausible explanation for a no-show could be accepted far easier than the poor attempts to justify our half-hearted efforts on the weekend.

Agreed....
