IMO there's no mystery about what happened here.

These are political lobbyists who've effectively war-gamed how they wanted this media campaign to roll out over the days and weeks ahead.

On the white board in Campaign HQ in Sydney for week three they had 'Sports Stars' listed in capitals. And sure enough, on week three the same email that had been sent out to other selected groups was sent out to a long list of current and former sports 'stars' who might be convinced to sign up to their political campaign.

It's been suggested in a previous post that more than 1000 emails were sent out in that 'sports-stars' grouping to which around 70 agreed to give their name to the pre-prepared letter. That's a dismal hit rate of just 7% which explains why the likes of Dawn Fraser, Sam Newman, Wayne Carey, Steven Bradbury and Diesel Williams got star billing.

It's marketing 101 gone horribly, laughably wrong.
Have they done film and TV stars yet? Maybe they could get Mel Gibson to sign on.

Sounds like the Treasurer may not be backing the PM 100%. Does he sense an opportunity?

Speaking earlier on Monday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged the push for a federal royal commission came "overwhelmingly from a good place".

"A lot of the voices that I've heard are voices that I respect a great deal," he said.

"The government's position is that we are focused on the urgent and the immediate."

Mr Chalmers said this included strengthening hate laws, tougher gun controls and implementing the recommendations in a review by the government's antisemitism special envoy Jillian Segal.

"We're focused on ensuring that we make a meaningful and helpful contribution to the NSW royal commission, and so that's been the government's focus on what is urgent and what is immediate," he said.

"We understand, obviously, that there are a number of Australians who would like to see a Commonwealth royal commission … we respect those people.

"We understand that those calls are coming from a good place."

Feels like a time to say more than most times: not entirely everything is about political opportunity.

Sounds like Dr Chalmers is merely trying to deliver the news a section of the community do not want to hear without alienating them.

Albo hasn’t said anything about implementing Jillian Segal’s recommendations. That would be a start. I’ll believe it when I see it. Still need the RC though.

I agree that it is planned. However, it has been effective in the public space. It has certainly given Rupert something to swing around in his newspapers and skynews. What is happening inside the minds of ordinary australians is another matter.

Rubbish. Again.

An announcement was made in front of the press on 18 December. It was also attended by Burke, the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, Krissy Barrett, Education Minister Jason Clare and Jillian Segal.

And Albanese has announced Parliament will be recalled later this month to allow draft hate legislation as proposed by Segal to be debated in both Houses and to discuss proposed tiughtened gun legislation and buybacks.

The narrative pushed by the government’s critics in the opposition and the media is that there’s an innate resistance to doing anything about antisemitism within the government, as demonstrated by its failure to implement the recommendations of antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal. In fact, key elements of Segal’s report simply cannot be implemented lawfully.

For example, Segal proposed that she — not the independent media regulatory body ACMA — monitor media agencies and “assist” them to meet editorial standards. That would be a draconian and unprecedented interference in a free press that drew no comment from the usual suspects in the Coalition and News Corp, usually quick to denounce any government role in further media regulation, such as the ill-fated misinformation bill proposed by this government, or the newspaper self-regulation mechanism proposed by the Gillard government.

Strangely, for someone who once won a university medal in law, Segal appears unaware that the Commonwealth has no power to directly regulate the content of newspapers in the same way it can regulate broadcasters.

I think that is colloquially called a dead bat.

Not sure Albanese has said anything particularly different.

Albo needs a distraction - maybe he should threaten to hip and shoulder the leader of the USSR or something

Those recommendations are a disgrace and saying that out loud is clearly not acceptable to the Liberal media.

But Chalmers said they’re going to. Who do we believe?

Why do you object to them?

Mind you, when Labor says they’re “going to” do something, a large pinch of salt is required.

Ok so this ziopolitical advisor persona you have adopted is about seasoning your chips?

If reports are correct, looks like he has blinked on the RC
And the results will be "anti semitism has risen in Australia due to 2 factors, the media being complicit with any criticism of Isreal is anti semitism and also there is a genocide going on in Gaza that Australians can see"

People calling for it should be reminded that be careful for what you wish for, you just might get it.

That'll be years away. They don't actually care about the outcomes.

Not sure why he would cave, it's not gonna get him good press, the media will continue to bang on about how he's to blame for Bondi but add that he took ages to agree with what they think was the 'right' decision. It would actually be less politically damaging to just ride it out. I don't hear anyone in my work or social circles talking about the need for a RC. It's Canberra and media bubble stuff.

He’s going to cave. Doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
