MELBOURNE DEMONS!!!
my cousin, who is a HUGE kangaroos supporter and was involved in the monash shootings a few weeks ago. anyway, yesterday, as a suprise for him, Anthony Stevens (kelly and their baby Ayva came too) came to visit him. mum thought id like to be there, so i went along too.
he seems like a really, really nice guy. we were all there for about an hour just having some drinks and biscuts and stuff. we spoke alot about the incident in 2000 where the glass fell on him. he told his story and seems he's VERY lucky to still be alive.
as you would, we got discussing footy. he said a few things that i found interesting. i cant remember all of them, but the one that i do remember was that mick martyn was really angry at the club for getting rid of him... i guess i can understand that.
he also said that the club's really looking forward to pre-season coz they have a very well gelled group atm.

anyway, i thought it was really nice of him to take the time out of his free time to visit a supporter. good luck to ya next season!!

Deegal,

Whilst it's great that Stevo took the time out to visit your cousin, more importantly, how is your cousin doing after the shootings?

Stevo makes a lie out of the old adage that Nice guy's come last he's number one, we at the Kangaroos are so lucky to have him as Captain. I swear when he finally retires i will be in tear's.

well, he is on the mend... he can move his shoulder ok, but he has 2 holes either side of it that have been sewn up. his hand, however, was shot through 3 fingures. one joint connecting the fingure to the hand, one through the bone (which shattered the whole fingure) and one through another joint in the middle of the fingure. he's having his 3rd operation (out a 5 or 6) in the next 2 weeks or so. he can slightly move his fingures now, but he'll never gain full use of them. so physically he is doing alot better, but he has slumped into a bit of a depression from it. i guess thats expected, but he used to alays be happy, and now he barly smiles (except for yesterday - he was ALL smiles!).

and yes, he was a very nice guy! infact, kelli was also really nice - very chatty, which was good. i dunno, i guess i expected them to be a bit snobby or something, but they were both really nice :)

I too send my best wishes to your cousin :). I have a query however - how did Stevo find out about him? I mean he wasn't the only person shot...

Stevo comes from the country and I think grew up on a dairy farm. He was born in 1971 and if his parents were farmers in the 1970's they would have gone through hellish times when he was a little kid. In 1976 the dairy industry was in real trouble and the beef industry far worse, an absolute disaster.

There was a drought as well, an oversupply of cattle and because cattle prices were so depressed, the government introduced a scheme which initially paid $5 a head, later increased to $10, for farmers to send their cattle to be shot and buried in pits. Nevertheless they were good prices compared to sending them to market and ending up getting a bill for the effort because the cost of cartage outweighed the amount paid by the cattle buyers (wholesale butchers).

They were shocking times and when you go through those sorts of times you end up with no pretences whatsoever. Just growing up on a dairy farm is enough, without the economic difficulties that so often go with it.

However, that sort of experience would have shaped Stevo's work ethic and given him the ability to see beyond the next hurdle to encounter. For all its trials and tribulations, growing up on a farm also has many great compensatory aspects and is a terrific environment for children to develop in.

Dairy farming, especially in the 1970's and earlier, is a very labour intensive occupation, particularly when the cows are calving and Stevo probably would have been in the midst of it, certainly after school, if not before going to school

my family (close family, just mum, dad, me and my sis's and bro) are friends with his and alot of the roos players masseur from outside the club, and from that, Anthony Stevens and our friend (schwarty) have become really good friends. my mum asked/begged (same thing!;)) schwarty if he could get any of the pleyers to see daniel, and he was able to get Anthony Stevens as they're good friends!

its WHO you know, not WHAT you know ;)

You know for some wierd reason, i find your 'claims' of knowing Stevo and co more reliable than that of suzi olsen. Don't get me wrong as it's not like i am reading wot u said with skepticism, perhaps its just that you actually post decent stuff unlike suzi and you actually seem like a decent person!

Yes Anthony Stevens is a champion player, bloke, anything that you can think of that is descent then thats what u could use to describe Stevo...Just imagine if you were in his position and you found out that your best mate of more than 10 years has been shagging the woman you loved (your wife).
Now would you be able to go out onto Arden Street leading the team out only a day or a few days after what had happened?? and for only a game?
I seriously call this bloke an absolute legend, and a freak...... who has a heart of gold, and it wouldnt suprise me if in round 6 2003 when North takes on Adelaide at the telstra dome, if Stevo shook Waynes hand after the game....... nothing as in having a 5 minute conversation, just a friendly shake of the hand and a pat on the back, same applies with Archer as well, i think these 2 are more professional than to start throwing full on punches at him (we will leave that up to Bourkey lol).
We are all slowly seeing the North greats leave the club one by one..... :Blakey, Carey, Bell, Pagan, McKernan, Martyn, Pickett, (next few years ...Stevo, King, Archer) and whilst this isnt the worst thing in the world..... its just a reminder to everyone that people dont last forever.
Keep goin Stevo you are the heart and soul of the North Melbourne Football club and you are respected by everyone in the football community, and on behalf of all footy fans WE!! wish you all the best in season 2003 along with the young Joey (Michael Stevens.)
